Couldn’t make it to South By Southwest? Not to worry — we’ve got reports from the frontlines of the year’s premiere music festival. Bassist Gordon Moakes fills us in.
Rock Stars and In-Laws…
We saw Amy from Stars, she was on the same flight from Phoenix, so that was nice. It was so late when we got in last night, and we were so hungry, we didn’t go into the fray. Almost certainly we’ll bump into people we know. Also I’ve got family here, in-laws.
Where’s the Best Food?
I think when in Stubb’s….it’s par for the course. And since we’ll be spending a fair bit of time up there tonight, I’m sure it’s on the menu, as it were.
How Many Shows in How Many Days?
We’re just playing one show this year– tonight at Stubb’s at midnight. We knew to minimize the appearances this time, and try to pace ourselves. Our first year (’05) we were very wide-eyed. It was only afterwards we realized we’d done five shows in three days. And we had an American tour to do, starting from there. It destroyed us, physically.
Gig of the Week?
We’re leaving tomorrow, but I spotted a few bands I would have gone to see. A friend is doing a showcase for Moshi Moshi Records in England—Metronomy and Foals — they’re young British bands that we have played with or know through going out in London. Foals are kind of like new rave, almost math rocky, but you can dance to it. Metronomy are crazy electro-rock.
