Paris Is Seething

Paris_tshirtBy now, you’re probably aware that Paris Hilton has been sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating a 36-month DUI probation she was sentenced to in January. In fact, if you’re like most people, by now, you’re probably celebrating. Results of a TMZ.com poll show that 94 percent of respondents feel that Paris’ jail sentence is justified. Only 8 percent of respondents of a CNN poll thought the sentence was "too strong." And, in perhaps the showiest form of Paris-based schadenfreude, Judge Michael T. Sauer, the man responsible for sentencing Paris, was greeted with a round of applause upon entering his church on Sunday. Church! People can’t get enough of this pampered socialite’s misery. They love to watch Paris burn.

In court, Paris contended that she had no idea that her license was suspended (which is what led to the violation of her probation). "I’m very sorry and from now on I’m going to pay complete attention to everything," she told the judge. Driver’s Ed Rule No. 1: If you aren’t paying attention to everything, you shouldn’t be driving in the first place. Her reaction to the judge’s ruling was just as clueless, as she called the sentence that’s supposed to begin June 5 "both cruel and unwanted." Surely, it’s no more cruel and unwanted than was the release of her album.

Most damning of all, in an interview conducted last month by Harper’s Bazaar, she complained  about her run-ins with the cops: "They’ll just pull me over to hit on me. It’s really annoying. They’re like, ‘What’s your phone number? Want to go out to dinner?’" It’s hard to sympathize with someone who is too priviledged to take any blame (see Paris’ post-sentencing firing of her publicist) and who’ll spin any hardship into an excuse for arrogance. (Paris is not being pulled over because she’s hot because she isn’t hot).

Some people think that when all is said and done, this incident will only add to her fame. Maybe it’ll boost her notoriety, but it isn’t winning her fans. At this point, sympathizing with Paris would be like sympathizing with a drunk driver…wait a minute, it’s not just like that, it is that. On the flip side: For once in her public life, Paris Hilton is bringing people unadulterated joy — she’s already begun paying back her debt to society and she hasn’t even hit the clink yet.
