Top 100 Songs of the ’90s

<:ilovethe::e>

It’s been almost 17 years since Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill (and later Le Tigre) told Kurt Cobain that he smelled like Teen Spirit. What a difference two decades makes: From Nirvana’s sulking, smarmy instruction, “Here we are now, entertain us,” to Generation MySpace’s inherent understanding that really, we’re all just here to entertain each other, is a gulf, a sea change in the way we think about culture and those who make it. (The Internet, by the way, makes a convenient scapegoat in case you’re looking for one.) VH1 returns to explore the innocent, mostly pre-digital age with The 100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s, a hits show that counts down the best of the best from the flannel decade. No. 1? You guessed it — “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana (see the video above).

Other highlights include “Cannonball” by the Breeders and “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, but there’s plenty of non-college-dorm fare here, too. Like, do you remember “Informer” by Snow? How about “I Wanna Sex You Up” by Color Me Badd? Madonna’s “Vogue”? Guilty pleasures and desperate measures await. Check the show out next Monday, December 17th, at 10 p.m. (EST) on VH1. And if you can’t wait that long, see the full list of all 100 best songs after the jump.

This is the worst list ever! What morons made it?

Mack August 3, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I think these songs were calculated by weeks at the top of the charts. I was in radio in the late nineties, and all of the songs that wouldn’t stop spinning (one headlight, barely breathing, 3am, the way) are all on the list (whether they are good or not). I think it has to do with weeks in the top 10. However, no boys 2 men, aerosmith, dave matthews, and guns n roses is odd.

Jose August 4, 2010 at 4:22 am

not too bad, but where the %~^!+&($)&_`~#!~ is glycerine. it’s soo raw

winter August 20, 2010 at 12:45 am

how could this possibly not have:

stone temple pilots
guns ‘n roses
tori amos
smashing pumpkins
lauren hill
rage against the machine
nine inch nails
ani difranco
gin blossoms
tracy chapman
blind melon
everything but the girl
mazzy star

…it’s almost like any artist that didn’t fit into a neat box labeled “rock” or “grunge” or “hip hop” or “pop” was ignored even if they had a huge impact (club scene or underground) and/or huge airplay. a LOT of alternative/progressive music of the 90s, ignored. ???

SPL August 23, 2010 at 9:46 pm

3 words…STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

BooOooM September 16, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I think that most of those songs are cool and some of those artists did become famous and all but there is one band that definitely made a BooM in the 90′s and is still in movie soundtracks and a lot of people listen to them . That band is The Prodigy and believe they deserve a spot if not in the all time countdown at least at the 90′s countdown . Thank you
