Fashion Week Frenzy: Girls Go Wild For Erin Fetherston

erinfetherston.jpgIt’s New York Fashion Week, and that means that Manhattan’s hosting all kinds of celebrities, models and designers. To present you with the best of the best, we asked America’s Most Smartest Model host and Harper’s Bazaar contributing fashion editor Mary Alice Stephenson to give her take on all the stylish craziness. In today’s installment, we discuss designer Erin Fetherston, whose line is a favorite of such celebrities as Zooey Deschanel (Elf), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) and, for some reason, Damon Dash (former Jay-Z business associate). The designer’s show was studded with celebrities, high-profile editors and buyers, and the theme had something to do with black roses — beautiful and oddly upsetting at the same time. More after the jump:

VH1: What did you think of Erin Fetherston’s show?
Mary Alice Stephenson:
She’s a little superstar. She lives, eats and breathes her clothes. She is her clothes — that’s what makes her point of view interesting. This show was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. She has a very romantic take on fashion, and she is the girl that wears her clothes. Her customers really respond to her, and her collection for Target was a huge success because of that. This season, her take was great. She still had that whimsical element that she’s known for, but there was a toughness to it, too. It was more than just party dresses. She challenged herself and it shows. A great step forward.

VH1: How would you describe what she does?
I’ve been to Erin’s atelier. It’s a bunch of young women who don’t care what the trends are. They just want to look girly and fresh, fashion-forward, and to have fun with clothes. That’s what’s so nice about her clothes. They’re fun and feminine, but there’s an edge to them, too. They’re girly without being precious . . . Erin’s not trying to think of what people want. She’s designing for herself and her friends. That’s such an original point of view that everyone else wants it, too.

VH1: Who’s attracted to Erin Fetherston’s clothes, famous-people-wise?
Zooey Deschanel sang at her last show. There’s Irina Lazareneau, Liv Tyler, Anne Hathaway — who sat front-row this time. Her clothes are approachable, just like Erin. She’s just so cool. There’s a lightness to everything that she does, and a sweetness to it, too. Although she’s being taken very seriously by an industry that’s quite tough, her clothes don’t feel heavy. She has the eye of many important people in the fashion industry. She’s going to do extremely well in this business.
