Sara Bareilles & the Tour Bus From Hell

sara_bareilles

The incredibly talented Sara Bareilles is out on the road with James Blunt on the You Oughta Know Tour. We asked the piano-playing phenom to give us updates from the road, and given that she’s such a sweetheart, she obliged. In her first installment, Sara tells us what she did on Valentine’s Day, and why having a tour bus might not be all it’s cracked up to be.

I’m sitting in the front lounge of our beautiful new bus, and it’s Valentine’s night. I wish I was out celebrating with friends but I’m nursing a cold instead of a beer. Needless to say, I’m so excited to be a part of this VH1 You Oughta Know Tour. The shows have all been sold out so far, and I know that both James Blunt and I have been thrilled with the whole experience. We are getting to play INCREDIBLE venues and there are so many wonderful listeners coming out to support. But since it’s more fun to hear the sordid details than how perfect everything is…

Two days into the tour, our bus broke down. I know, that doesn’t sound so crazy, but if you only knew that we’ve been WAITING for a bus for ever and ever, and this was our first chance to actually experience life on the road as a real-life BUS tour band. We have spent the last year and a half driving ourselves around in 15 passenger vans and U-Haul trailers. Great fun, but sure as hell no bus. We finally got the bus, and successfully made it to the first of our shows in Seattle. Hooray! Then, on our way to our second show in San Francisco, three belts in the engine shredded and busted the fan which then split off into pieces and ruined the radiator. All this 30 miles outside of Chico, CA. Which means we had to get a taxi to rent a fatty moving van for our gear and a not-so-fatty rental car for our bodies, and high tail it to our San Francisco show.

We made the show just in time for all our friends and family to make fun of us for not having the bus we said we had. Thanks guys. :) Anyway- It was a fabulous reminder of where we’ve been, and all the sweeter when our dear bus was returned to us, all fixed up and wonderful again. So here I sit, on my sweet bus, thankful for every moment of this whole dang thing. See you soon…
