Girlicious - Episode 6 - Being Pretty Is a Skill
“Being pretty is a talent. People are drawn to beauty,” says Natalie. “Yup,” agrees free thinker Chrystina. Natalie. I pray you’re watching this. Change your harpy ways.
This week’s theme is vocal expression. Obviously, vocal coach Kenn Hicks wasn’t feeling that he’s getting enough face time. So they let him sing opera. On primetime. On the CW. Not exactly the target audience.
For their performance of “What A Feeling” (of Flashdance fame, during which many of these girls were likely not alive) Kenny chooses Chrystina, as opposed to the vocally superior Carrie, to open the song.
In Jenna, Natalie, Nichole and Charlye’s group, Charlye struggles with the dance moves. “You’re a better dancer than this,” Robin scolds. Mikey takes it as a personal insult. “She came in here in such a funk,” he spits in his post-scene interview. Go put on some more lip gloss and chains, Mikey. These girls are worked.
Kenn guns for even more face time. “Whoever prepares and shows the most improvement,” he says, “gets a private vocal session with me.” Jenna pulls a diva move, asking for more lines to sing, and Natalie nods along. She attempts to sing Kenny the line she wants, but he’s not having it. Natalie walks out after Kenny attempts to provide an explanation.
Tiffanie is disgusted with Natalie’s behavior. “Beyonce doesn’t walking out of his sesson. Chris Brown doesn’t walk out of his session.” Tiffanie urges Natalie to go back in the session, and as she vacillates, realizing that maybe she overreacted a tad, he storms out, furious with her. Ultimately, he schools her, even gets her to come back in and apologize to her group.
This week, the girls are going to Geffen Records, recording a brand new Girlicious track. The girls are super psyched, rather inexplicably, to sing in front of Ron Fair. They realize they sing in front of Ron Fair every week, right?
Nicole Scherzinger shows up for a little advice. “Be you, but be you at your best.” Thanks Nicole. If that solo record doesn’t pan out, you should try a self-help book.
Jenna’s experience in the booth just makes her think of the Grammys she’ll win. Ron thinks Tiffanie sounds like a record, and Charlye struggles in the booth. Tiffanie ends up winning immunity for the week.
Like any house filled with girls, the phone is an issue. Jenna decides to teach Charlye, who’s been struggling with her homesickness, a lesson. “She needs to suck it up,” Jenna explains as to why she won’t get off the phone.
Charlye’s so upset, Kenn gives her the vocal session because she’s been vocally and mentally buckling under the pressure. This is essentially an opportunity for Kenn to play the piano and sing to Charlye.
For this week’s competition all seven girls will be dancing together at the end in a girlxtravaganza. During the rehearsal Chrystina messes up the words so many times that Robin actually loses it on Chrystina, with Mikey hissing “so unprofessional.”
Natalie explains that there’s a lot of weird chemistry, and of course, Jenna doesn’t want to rehearse anymore. “I don’t need to practice my part,” she explains, while the other more capable dancers stay downstairs and practice. Riiiiiiiight.
During soundcheck, Kenn Hicks regrets his earlier decision to have Chrystina open the song, as she simply isn’t a strong enough singer. Ultimately, Carrie opens “What A Feeling.”
I wonder if Mark McGrath ever gets jealous having to announce all the hits that Ron Fair’s produced. Ever think he wishes Ron would produce one for him?
A glitter-filled, girl-powered medley goes down. “There were moments of greatness, and there were moments of weakness,” explains Robin. Jenna’s a disappointment, while Nichole and Charlye did well. Robin’s pissed that Natalie walked out on Kenn Hicks. Tiffanie occasionally goes over the top, and Carrie never disappoints. Chrystina’s last minute part switch leaves her shaken.
This week’s eliminations prove difficult for the judges, but after repeating over and over that she’s “low energy,” which is Girlicious for lazy, Jenna is made to hang up her boa.
