Write A Poem, Win Tix To Madonna Show

Editor’s Note: Entries are no longer being accepted. The submissions phase ended April 24 at noon (EST). Check back soon to read the winning poems.

madonna-250×250.jpg

Anyone can go to see a superstar in a huge venue — that’s easy. But it’s a rarity to catch the queen of pop in a much cozier joint. If you’re a Madonna fan and a decent poet, you’ve got a shot at making this dream come true. Our “4 Lines To See Madonna” contest is all about celebrating the arrival of the singer’s new Hard Candy on April 29. We’ll select two winners, and they’ll each get a pair of tickets for an exclusive performance at New York’s intimate Roseland Ballroom on April 30.

Here’s the deal: you submit a four-line poem about Madonna in the comments section below. It can rhyme, not rhyme, be about her fashion sense, be about a song, or be about a particular era of her storied career. Hey, it can be about any aspect of Madonna’s life that moves you. We’ll check entries through noon of April 24, and decide on two winners. Transportation to NYC is not provided. But once you’re here, there will be two tickets waiting for you.

Feel free to submit more than one entry. We’ll contact the winning poets on April 25 via the email that you include on the “Mail” field of the comments section. (This email will not be made public.) Download the official rules here. You’ll be judged on outrageousness, musical knowledge, and crazy-ass rhymes. Need an example to get you started? You got it.

You’ve sung about sex and spiritual stuff
You’ve proven for years that you take no guff
Now that you’re in the Rock Hall of Fame
Everyone knows, that girl you’ve got game.

Check another example after the jump.

Timberlake‘s bud, Warren Beatty‘s too
Used to play punk rock, but those days are through
Madge you’ve moved on to much more acclaim
Thanks to your stuff, we’ll never be the same.

One name synonymous with fortune and fame.
One woman who always seems to be ahead of the game.
One reason she is still on top, because she never ever stays the same.
One can only expect sweet new music from this Ciccone-Ritchie dame.

Kevin Nichols April 29, 2008 at 1:04 pm

A virgin to sweets, you’ve had it all
A master of feat, over 25 years sprawl
More than just hair or clothes or style
Your reinventions have all been worthwhile!

celine April 29, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I wish I could meet you once again in Paris
I wish I could hear you in New York
If candies can be hard
Yours are so sweet..

Ron Soper April 29, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Dear Madonna,
I’ve been a huge fan of yours since your release of Everybody, I was a dj in the early 80′s and introduced your music to all my friends and family in NY and Paris. The first time I saw you perform was at escapes in Merrick long Island, I was on crutches having just had surgery on my foot, with pins sticking out of my toes, i still managed to get up close to the stage.
Since your in the NY area, I was wondering if you could stop by and visit my younger sister Donna, she’s in the hospital with Pancreatic and liver Cancer. She is a remarkable woman with two beautiful teenage daughters. We are all heartbroken, but remember her quality personality and her life, allways putting others before herself. She is still with us and we are praying everyday that a miracle happens and she can be saved. Another miracle would be if you could stop by even just for a few minutes. My cousin Valerie is also a huge fan, she was here last week from France, she mentioned to me that I was the one who introduced your music to her and remembered when her and Donna saw you at the meadowlands.
Well if this reaches you, and Like a prayer it does… please contact me.
Thanks for all the music and memories.
love Ron

Where’s the info on “who the winner’s are” Ah, isn’t this a bit last minute??

John Grosso, New York April 29, 2008 at 3:26 pm

What I wrote…

No virgin soul with songs like prayers can be coincidence
No wanna-be comes closer or has gone the distance, since
She gets down on her knees and lifts us to nirvana
It’s true as blue yet no one sees that she is THE MADONNA

I know I’m not blowing smoke up my a$$ when I say this poem is 10x greater than those that were (lazily) chosen.

And I’m sure there were other incredible poems too. vH1 should have actually PAID ATTENTION to the entries as they were entered, picked out good ones as they came along, then narrowed it down.

This is the first and last time I enter a contest. I really thought I’d have a chance being I cosider myself a poet/writer before anything else. Oh well. No hard feelings. Sucks for vh1 in the end.

The winners… http://blog.vh1.com/2008-04-28/two-poets-win-madonna-tickets/#comment-657838

Disgusted in CA April 30, 2008 at 12:29 am

What happened with the free Madonna Tickets? The contest rules specifically stated that you would send an email on April 25th to two winners. These winners would be provided 2 tickets each valued at $300 each and pick them up at the door. Yet no winners have been announced to date. There is no way that people from out of state could get airline tickets in time to see her in concert at this point. Did you do this intentionally for free publicity? It is false advertisement to state in rules published on the internet that you are having a poetry contest to award free tickets to two winners and then leave people hanging and never announce a winner.

Every contestant who submitted poetry could sue you in a class action lawsuit for lying to them. It’s really a very cruel thing to play with people’s minds like this and has caused many contestants unnecessary anxiety and undue distress. As I have read in many blogs on this site from folks wondering what is going on here. Does Madonna even care that this is happening and that she could be held accountable along with VH1? I thought she represented herself as a spiritual woman who cares about people. I’d really like to hear what she has to say about VH1′s fraudulant business practices and her participation in this obvious hoax. In fact, I’d really like to hear what an attorney has to say about this VH1 scam. Wouldn’t you fellow poetry contestants?

Unless of course the two winners who received an email on April 25th as stated on this website would like to come forward and let us know that VH1 complied with the contest rules. If not, I believe that VH1 should pay for transportation for any winners announced tomorrow (if any) and provide airline tickets as well as hotel accomodations for announcing the winners past the designated deadline according to their own offical rules.

You got the world on their knees bowing to the Queen of Pop
Give what you got; we don’t want you to stop
You are the beautiful stranger I hold close to my heart
You keep the fighting spirit in me alive even miles apart

The information published about this concert is very poor and unprofessional from all sources: am NEW YORK, Verizon Wireless and Verizon. On April 29th. I saw an ad in am NEW YORK saying that you can get free tickets from Verizon if you are a customer. When I called Verizon wireless they had no idea about what I was talking about when I inquired about the free tickets, they told me to call verizon. When I called Verizon they told me to call the telephone number listed for Roseland or go to Verizonwireless.com. I first called Roseland and they said to go to Verizonwirelees.com, I did that, only to find out the contest for the free tickets was over on April 24th. at noon (EST). This is not right, If something is going to be promoted all the sources involved should be informed with correct and reliable information so that people don’t waste their time and get aggravated because of misinformation and irresponsibility.

Always Amazed Shirley April 30, 2008 at 1:04 pm

I am always amazed at fanatic’s and their ego trips. If you people would read the rules it says that the winners would be notified via THEIR e-mails not every fool that sent in &@&! y (#) poems, and there were definalty some &@&! y (#) poems!!!!! If you have not heard anything by now why don’t you figure it out you FOOLS, you did not win. Another thing that amazes me is that supposedly true fans bring their Idols into it and start bad mouthing them and bringing them down. None of you people deserve to win because you are all IDIOTS and not true fans at all!!!!!! Allot of you people need to grow up and by the way the only one people should worship is the one and only GOD of Abraham, Issac and Jacob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jennipher April 30, 2008 at 1:20 pm

I agree with what some of the fans are saying.. some people such as myself take their poetry very serious and thought this was a very serious contest.. why waste everyones time and hopes if you were never going to follow thru on giving tickets to anyone.. i thought all the poems were cute and worthy of winning.. this whole thing was bogus.. and just so plainly wrong.. and reallly i thought who gives tickets but doesn’t provide travel to the place where the concert is being held.. i started to think maybe even if you did win it would be nose bleed seats.. maybe some people just don’t care about their fans.. this was bogus from the get go. i should have known it was all just a dumb ploy. just like poetry.com they say your like this big winner but then they want you to buy their books and their plaques its all just a big joke… and i know it said people would be notified by their emails which is cool but why not announce the lucky winners so you can congradulate them and see what really poems made it.. all the poem were not crap shirley.. there were some really good ones.. and what does God have to do with it anyway crazy.. i have won tons of poetry contest where i won actual money those are on the up and up.. contest where you have to pay for things simply are not.. i just would have like to have known who the winners were, for that matter i think everyone would have like to have known.. it show crediability…

Dear Madonna,

I do not wish for a win or a prize. Just to give my poem. I honestly think of you every day. My poem is called ” Thoughts” and its from me to you.

Happiness is our goal in life..
My dreams live in you like fire and ice…
Mixed are the tears that flow from all hearts….
I please and I thank you as memories never part..

Smile,

Jean Marie

Hi Madonna,
I can’t rhymes worth sh**! I know this is better though….
My name is CIndy, I believe you are a godess.
I have been a loyal fan since I was 9 years old I believe that is when you started your career. I am now 27 years old. You made it big with Like a prayer, Material Girl, Like A Virgin. I remeber as a 9 year old I would sing Like a prayer and come up with all these dance moves. As I grew up I like you more and more. My very first tape by you is Immaculate Collection. Back in the day they had this cool thing called Club House where people could buy 10 cd’s for .99 cents What I did as a kid back then I simply purchased every cd you had out there. ^&$+ Tracey and all. I have I believe 15 to 16 cd’s up to date. I love you Madonna. I only wish to see you one day in concert I know everything there is to know about you. I have every movie you’ve ever been in and every music video you have out there. By now I must sound crazy but in fact I just appreicate everything you have ever done as a human being. Adopted a little boy. Had two kids of your own. I know you went through stupid stuff after adopting little David I think thats his name? If I am wrong I am sorry. My boyfriend’s name is David. I gave up something really rare a “lucky penny” to my mom as a collector just so she could buy me your Evita cd that was a pretty pricey soundtrack. I love you Madonna I am your biggest fan out there. Cindy

Taymara Ferreira April 30, 2008 at 10:48 pm

It was waiting the alias process
and this hour finally arrived
Hour where I can show
the reason I deserve to gain
As well as you I also I search the fame
Alone that my fame is to be an actress of holywood
As well as you
I also is ambitious
Desire camera flashes going off in my direction
As well as you
is battling to get mine glamour
As well as you
Will leave my Country to get the success
As well as you
Also is influenced by a person who if identifies as MADONNA
With all these coincidences
Even though of personality
Is that I come with the thought
Of that the person who I idolatro in such a way deserves
the the least to read what I
Taymara, a humble person
That he lives in Brazil
Wrote with as much love and affection
For lendária Mrs. MADONNA

Ps: I live in the Brazil and my bigger dream and power algun day to see you exactly that he is of far.
I am making attend a course of English and wrote this poem with the aid of my teacher.
I am not good with the words but I wait that it likes.

Shirley, you are truly are amazing.. and a hypocrite. It’s obvious by your unkind and cruel comments below that you are not a spiritual woman or you would have kept your big mouth shut and practice what you preach for it is better to cut out your tongue than to harm another with it, and this is according to your own beliefs, sister. Besides, you have missed the entire point. This contest was published on the internet and tickets to Madonna concert were promised to the winners. VH1 created official rules for us to follow and insulted us all by not even following their own rules. Most of the poems submitted were done according to these rules and even if they didn’t, poetry comes from the soul, the core of our being and every poem here was submitted in good faith. VH1 has caused many souls much anguish over the way that they have handled this contest and how they have treated us as human beings. I’m sure that your God, whatever name you choose to call him/her, is frowning upon Madonna/Esther right now for allowing VH1 to make a total and complete mockery of her name and to harm many souls during the process. It didn’t matter if my poem won… all I care about is how people are treated.

wondering May 1, 2008 at 4:52 pm

has anyone won yet?????

Millie May 1, 2008 at 7:08 pm

The Concert was yesterday, I want to read the winning Poem.

allyssa coillot May 1, 2008 at 8:06 pm

you never know the girl in you until you do
when you look in the mirror you may not know it is you
we don’t know what will happen in the next few years
you just have to look behind the tears
you have to look behind the smile
and let the girl inside out who has been waiting awhile
look in the mirror and tell me what you see
it may not be the girl you want it to be
but it is you
and your the only one who knows what to do…

Always Amazed Shirley May 2, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Dear Disgusted in CA, Since when has Modonna been known to follow the rules anyway!!?? As far a me being a hypocrite goes I am probably one of the nicest companssionate people you will ever meet in your entire life. But when I read all this trival crap that people go on about especailly when there are so many bigger problems in the world and other peoples lifes it makes me crazy!! It was the same thing with the Led Zeppelin reunion concert, talk about people going over the top and being so greedy and then on top of it bad mouthing Zep when all they were trying to do is raise some money for a good cause. Well the same thing happened with this Madonna thing and I just think people need to put things into perspective. Madonna albeit a very talented human being is just that a human being and VH1 was just trying to do something diffrent and get the fans involved. IF you read the rules they said that they would notify the winners. For some reason though with todays mentality there are always a bunch of cry babys and sue happy people and if you think me calling those people fools is wrong will I am not sorry for that because people are out of control in this world today ! You do have to admit allot of the poems entered were not very good and if I hurt anyones feelings by expressing my opinion about there poetic content that was not my intention and I do apoligize for that!! I am not the judge of any human being on this earth ( I am allowed my opinions though ) my God is and by the way as the Bible says ” He IS ” just to let you know my God is a he!!! Thank you for pointing out that I may have hurt some peoples feelings and I was wrong for that but once again I do not apologize for being amazed of other peoples pettieness and greediness!!
God Bless You disgusted in CA, By the way I live in Ca too!!!

Always Amazed Shirley May 2, 2008 at 3:05 pm

P.S. just as there is no crying in Baseball the same goes for rock n roll only except in rock n roll there is no crying, whining or sniffeling !!

Ian May 2, 2008 at 10:47 pm

I have to wonder about the rules though. The baseball rule is very valid here but at the same time if there is a bad call on the winning team there are going to be people in uproar about it. Especially if the rules are twisted. Madonna didn’t control this competition VH1 did. They are the ones responsible for all the bad feelings that have come out of this. They didn’t even follow their own rules. Is that a Madonna trait sure, but this is a competition in where people need to plan organize their own lives to see Madonna. I can understand that poetry is a wonderful deep emotion and there were a lot of people out there that put real effort and had real good poems out there and all that was left at the end of the day was pain stake waiting and 2 poems that weren’t up to par nor the rules. VH1 are the hypocrites if anyone was hypocrite here. I don’t think the animosity amongst the fans are the problem, VH1 were clearly the problem here and at fault for misleading so many people. Now noticing the 2 people being from back east must be some clue into getting people to come without spending an arm and a leg to see Madonna and to fill seats, if so, the competition should have been for people close to the east coast. Anyways it is what it is, I was horribly disappointed as I personally spent many hours coming up with about 20 poems that I felt proud of. In the end I didn’t win for whatever reason but as someone that enjoys poetry I’m glad I could write something about Madonna and emotions for her and actually create some cool poetry, I’m proud of that. As for this competition, it’s come and gone and sadly again, it is what it is.

From loss and sadness, bear in my early thoughts,
I eagered, I struggled and stagnated, like the swallow flew without it’s mother.
It almost tore my wings apart.

I didn’t know where to start, begin or end…
But to venture the unknowns with playing music, my art
embarking on a journey, trying put rythem to my broken heart , allow my deepheld emotions to spill out onto rivers and ecape to the seas,
free to open my wings and connect to what i thought was lost
finally take to the skies, unified to be touched by the light and love once again

And Now I understand, my life was given by her, mother, mother, guided me all those times..she knew I could be the very pheonix that take to the skies of what is eternity.

Madonna I hope read this someday as I hope you will understand the message in it. just something I felt i needed to express to you.

Just like a cameleon. Just like a virgin. Just like a prayer.

No matter what, Madonna is the one and only true artist that will ever be loved.

Express your emotions, express your feelings, no matter what you will be dealing.

She’s got no oponent. She’s the material girl, the frozen heart the broken rose.

The one who’s changing like the one above. The human nature, the only throne. The Queen of queens.

Just like the seasons, she’s changing, just like the weather, she’s melting. The one and only. The great desire. Madonna’s hot, Madonna’s tire.

You’ll love her or hate her. You take it or leave it. To have and not to hold. To kiss and not to stroke.
To watch her and not adore. To miss her and not even call.

Rocco and Lourdes, the beat is in your veins, the music in your body and your love is in your taste. Madonna’s number one, you know she is yo mom!

peace & lub

Dejame tenerte por un momento !
Solo un momento, tu y yo nada mas.
Dejame sentirte mio.
Dejame sentirte cerca.
Cerca muy cerca,
tan cerca que hasta
pueda escuchar tu corazon.
Es solo un momento !
Regalame ese momento !
Luego te iras y te olvidaras …
De este momento,
y tal vez de mi.
Pero yo tratare de olvidarlo,
aunque duela y lastime…
Quiero un momento con vos !
Solos tu y yo,
una unica vez,
una ultima vez !
