The Celebreality Interview - Khia

khia_interview.jpg

“If I had a Britney machine or a Rihanna machine, I woulda been the beautifulest thing in the world, too,” says the just-disqualified Miss Rap Supreme contestant Khia. Below, she talks about why an established rapper would go on a reality show like this, her relationship with Lil’ Wayne and beef…just don’t tell her we called it that.

Were you mad about being disqualified?

No! It was the perfect exit. I didn’t go on there to follow rules. I went on there and every time I opened my mouth, I was promoting myself and my music. Until they were able to come to find out and stop being delayed…I knew I was going to go home sooner or later. There was no competition in the house. I’m a writer, that’s what I do. I wasn’t on there to play games and be playing with them. They were amateurs. I have done something. My whole objective was to promote me and my music and to let my fans see me. So no, it was just like, “Bye! Toodles!” Everybody there was rapping things that were pre-written. Nobody heard of it, nobody wants to hear it.

Did you think it would take them longer to figure you out?

No. “You My Girl” [the song performed for the nuns on the first episode] was previously recorded, so I should have gone from the beginning. Ms. Cherry had brought it up, so the judges figured out, “She’s fried us.” But now, everybody’s fried because everyone’s verses have to be investigated and the fans are like, “Well, she pre-wrote this,” and “She pre-wrote that.” So it’s like, awwwww, why didn’t you guys shut up and allow me to promote myself? But it was fun. It’s still fun.

Ms. Cherry mentioned this at the elimination?

Yes! She was like, “I heard that before.” I said, “I’m sure you have. I write hits.” Serch didn’t have any choice, especially after I roasted him for hatin’. He was just like, “Let’s get her out of there because this is gonna be too much.”

Part of the challenge, to write 16 bars in an hour, is to see how quick you are on your feet. So you’re saying that you’d rather people hear your music than respect your quickness?

Yes! I’m not a freestyler. Freestylin’ is for free. Why would you get up there and say anything that doesn’t make any sense when you’re on television and you have the opportunity to perform in front of millions of people. You’re gonna go on there and look like a fool, like Ms. Cherry did today? She didn’t even have any material to remember because she’s not a rapper. There’s no way I was gonna get on television and play their game. I went on there with a mission, and my mission was accomplished.

Why didn’t you rap any songs from your upcoming album, Nasti Muzik, on the show?

If I were to do that, they own it. They couldn’t own “Respect Me” or “You’re My Girl” because I own it. So guess what? Pay me to play my music on your show. Checkmate!

What’s your status with Ms. Cherry now?

She’s a joke. She’s young. It’s nothing. She hasn’t done anything to impress me, so I’m not giving her any free promotion. You have to prove yourself and she did that on the show today. It was horrible.

Why did she have such beef with you?

I don’t know. She was a fan! I lived in her city for almost four years. I’ve seen her on many different occasions. So I think it was just her trying to put on for TV. She definitely knows my music and my background.

What about the other girls? Did they respect you?

Yes. Of course they were going to edit it and show me being bossy, but that’s me. Of course I’m going to say that I’m the best. They didn’t show me and the other girls just getting along, me giving them advice, them just looking up to me. There was some haters in the house, but overall, they showed respect.

Did you make friends?

I wouldn’t say “friends.” I’m a realist so I can pick up on fake people quickly and there ere a lot of them in the house. A lot of followers in the house. Rece Steel was genuine and Nicky2States was genuine. She’s a sweetheart.

You’re pretty well known for your beef. Is there anyone in the industry that you do like?

Lil’ Wayne. I love Lil’ Wayne. I don’t think I have beef. I think people mix the truth with beef. Just because I’m so blunt and upfront and real, they’re used to people sugar-coating stuff. It’s not beef. People love my opinion of things because they know I’m gonna give it to ‘em raw. If it’s hot, it’s hot, if it’s not, it’s not, if you wrong, you wrong, if you right, you right.

What’s your relationship with Lil’ Wayne like?

Great. I would say I don’t really do the type of things that they do, and I don’t hang around the type of people that he hangs out with, but one-on-one time is good. He needs better mentors. He’s such a great person. People think he’s a bad person, but he’s not. He’s got it under control.

When you talk about him, even now, I get the sense that something romantic is going on. Is that what you’re implying?

Well…I don’t talk about my personal life too much. But I’m his biggest fan. I’ll just say that.

Are there any females rapping now that you respect?

No. How could I? They all have ghostwriters and so many different producers, it’s like, “Who are you?” People say, “Khia’s a hater,” and it’s like, no bitch. I really am an artist and I do, produce and compose. Just because they dress you up pretty and play dress-up with you, it doesn’t mean that you’re the baddest bitch.

Any resentment for Serch and YoYo?

Uh, yes! Serch was a hater. He was intimidated from the beginning. How are you going to judge somebody that outsold you? All this “obscurity” and “oblivion,” and I’m like, “Serch, is this your life?” “My Neck, My Back” was a major hit, and it’s not going anywhere. I don’t remember “The Gas Mask,” “The Gas Face” or whatever it was. Don’t try to roast me because I’m up on here hustling and grinding and keeping myself promoted. He and YoYo did not understand why I was there. Everybody thought that I should have been a judge, thank you, again.

What specifically about YoYo did you have problems with?

YoYo is a sweetie, but she’s an undercover hater. She was just like, “Khia, I cannot believe you attacked Ms. Cherry. You are a leader. How could you do that?” I’m just like, “She’s the one that’s been running all around the house talking, ‘one-hit wonder.’” When I respond to that, don’t say I attacked her. She had it coming. This is a hip-hop/MC battle show. Don’t come with that, “Oh Khia, you’re a role model” s***. No.

When Ms. Cherry was calling you a one-hit wonder, she was doing it to dog you. But how do you feel about that label in general?

I love it. When they say “one-hit wonder,” they think they’re attacking me with that, but some artists are trying to find that one hit. I made hip-hop history the first time up to bat. I will continue to eat off “My Neck, My Back” for years to come. I will be performing that song at 50. All over the world, all colors, races. Crossing all boundaries. No female has been able to have a mega-hit in hip-hop. Please tell me one song.

“Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa.

There you go. OK. “My Neck, My Back” is in the league with that. So who do I see in the house? No one, YoYo. (Laughs maniacally) I mean, whatever.

Is it a hard thing to live up to, that one hit?

I feel bamboozled because I had such a mega-hit, and I’m just the girl from around the way. I had the success independently, so I didn’t have the mega-machine behind me to make sure my video plays 50 times a day. As big as that song was, if I had a Britney machine or a Rihanna machine, I woulda been the beautifulest thing in the world, too. They’re all robots. If we say they’re hot, they’re hot. If they say, “We’re not accepting Khia because she’s a s***-talker and she doesn’t do what we do, and if we let her know what’s going on, she’s going to expose us”…they’re like, “No! Don’t let her in.” But it’s fine. I’m still going to continue do my music because I love it.

Keep up with Khia via her MySpace.
