The Celebreality Interview - Lionezz

After the jump, the twice-booted Miss Rap Supreme contestant talks about her difficulty with English, the homoerotic adventures of some of the girls in the house and why it’s so hard for a woman to make connections in the field of hip-hop (hint: it has to do with sex).
How was your experience on the show?
Very good. It was very tough . I never felt that much pressure on myself, but it was the best experience of my musical life.
What was the hardest thing?
Being in the elimination round three times and getting kicked out two times. Writing 16 bars from scratch and memorizing that was hard because English isn’t my native tongue.
A lot of people don’t like the 16-bars-in-one-hour challenge. Do you think it’s fair? Is it an accurate representation of an MC’s skills?
Well, I can’t really say if it’s fair. But I don’t think it has anything to do with skills. None of those big rappers, except maybe Jay-Z or something, write a whole song in one hour and memorize it. If they write a song in one hour, they’ll read from the paper in the booth.
What happened after you were eliminated the first time?
After I got kicked out, I went to a hotel. I felt so terrible, like, why did I go first? I was really down and I thought I shouldn’t have been on the show at all. Then I got the phone call to come back to the house and it was a crazy emotional transition.
You said in an online extra that when you heard the other girls rap, you gave up on thinking you’d win the competition.
Yes. People watch the show, but of course they can’t show all or rhymes. There’s way more talent than you can see on TV. When I watched The White Rapper Show it was like, “Ha! I can do that!” Now I know there was way more talent in the house, but you can’t catch everything on TV. I was over-confident.
Who’s the most skilled MC in the house?
Lady Twist. But it’s always different – skills vs. style. I prefer the style of Ms. Cherry and Chiba.
Can we talk about your method of dog-walking for a second?
Uh yeah. I watched the show (laughs) and I have to admit that that line didn’t make any sense at all (”Fellas walkin’ after me like I’m walkin’ a dog”). When I run, my dog runs behind me. If I walk him, he walks in front of me. You know what I was trying to say, but what I said didn’t make sense at all.
It’s kind of masochistic of you to get involved in a field that requires a mastery of English.
See, that’s what I don’t understand. What is “masochistic?”
As a native German speaker, making English your trade strikes me as self-abuse.
Well, yeah, the show was kind of self-abuse, but doing music, no. When I do music, I have time to sit down. I have time to get my dictionary. I have time to ask native speakers, “Does this make sense?” I do my music and it’s all about the songs.
Who are your influences?
I’m a big fan of Timbaland, because it’s hip-hop but it’s pop. I want to be successful and I want to go in this direction.
What was your impression of all the girl-on-girl action in the house?
It was just that one night, after the auditions, it was really tough. We just got loose when we got in the house and things went wild. But other than that, the whole show was about the competition and everyone was focused on that.
What was your take on the Chiba-Byata fight of the last episode? Was that endemic of the state of race relations in the house?
No not at all. I know Chiba. She’s a very good-hearted person. I talked to her about the incident, and she was really upset. She didn’t know how to respond to being called a devil and it just slipped out. I wasn’t offended.
As a white MC in the house, you didn’t feel at a disadvantage?
No. Not at all.
In general?
Just because of my language.
In your experience is something like this show necessary because of the state of female rap? Have you faced people disinterested in your work simply because it’s coming from a female MC?
Oh yeah, definitely. I tried for a while and especially in America, when you try to make connections and you’re female and kinda look good (laughs), then they all just try to f*** me, point blank. That’s not my style and that’s why I never got anywhere.
Are you still facing this problem?
Right now? No. People are listening because I got exposure on TV. It’s easier now.
Is that the best thing you’re taking away from the show?
It’s important, but the best thing is that I know I can do it. I know I can rap. Before I didn’t. Being in the Top 10 girls to try out for this show really helped my self-esteem.
