VH1’s Rock Honors Bash: The Highlights!

Tonight, a sold-out crowd of 6,000 lucky fans watched The Who play an intimate, hour-long set of their most memorable songs at UCLA’s Pauley Pavillion. Incubus, Pearl Jam, The Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters and Tenacious D also took the stage and paid tribute to The Who by covering some of the band’s biggest hits. In addition to rockers, stars like David Duchovny, Rainn Wilson, Mila Kunis, Sean Penn and Adam Sandler were on hand to honor the most explosive band in rock.

Highlights of VH1’s 2008 Rock Honors included:

Gaz Coombes of Supergrass joining Foo Fighers on stage for “Bargain.”

Rainn Wilson from The Office as the pinball wizard (”from Scranton down to Fresno, I must’ve played ‘em all”).

Wayne Coyne getting passed around the audience in an inflatable space ball.

Mila Kunis and her dress.

Tenacious D’s acoustic version of “Squeeze Box.”

Pearl Jam accompanied by a ten-piece string section on “Love, Reign O’er Me.”

Adam Sandler’s musical intro of The Who (to the tune of “Magic Bus”).

Roger Daltrey’s trademark “Won’t Get Fooled Again” scream.

Jeremy Piven’s date might deserve an honorable mention. (No image available, unfortunately.)

Tune in to VH1 on Thursday July 17 at 9PM ET to see the entire show (and see it in HD on MHD) and check out VH1.com throughout the week to see sneak preview performances from Foo Fighters and The Who as well as exclusive, behind-the-scenes interviews hosted by Rainn Wilson from The Office. One of the most awesome shows EVER!!

  • Ian L Says:

It was so incredible. I’ll never forget this show.

Which song was it that got stopped in middle? You Better You Bet?
We got to hear it again, which was fanatastic!

  • Steven D Says:

I was there as well. Like Ian said, You Better You Bet was stopped all of a sudden near the end. Then Pete says its cause of a problem with the computers or sound or something. A short break before Roger said, “We’ll just start again.” (thunderous applause ensued). Pete also said over the microphone to his techie to turn the monitor down that was next to him because it was “defeaning.” I can only imagine how loud the speaker must have been when a guy infamous for loud performances and hard of hearing says a speaker is deafening. BTW, I got to shake Roger’s hand on his way out after the show. Good times!

  • David Says:

Crap, crap, crap- Bring back the VH1 Divas please!!!!

  • Bobby V. Says:

The who Show from last night…
    Thought you might be interested…
    Bobby!

  • Mano Says:

song listing is out of order. The show actually started off with the Foo Fighters doing “Young Man’s Blues” followed by “Bargin”. Greatest moment by far was Pearl Jam’s version of Love Reign O’er Me”, followed by “The Real Me”. The intensity in which Eddie Vedder sang those songs was simply amazing! Can’t wait to see what airs this coming Thursday….

    Peace to all….

  • Brett Says:

There’s more to music than “VH1 Divas,” for crying out loud! There was rock music LONG before hip-hop.

VH1 - Who fans are clamoring for a DVD release of the show in its entirety. You have a sizable market out there who would snatch that up in a heartbeat!

Overall, a very good show. Flaming Lips was probably the weakest of the tribute acts, and sound problems and forgotten song lyrics plagued many (even Roger Daltrey, it seems!), but the Who’s performance was incendiary!

  • Jill and Gary Says:

    Correction!

THERE WAS A SMASHED GUITAR!!! Mike McCready of Pearl Jam COMPLETELY smashed his guitar at the end of their set!

Pearl Jam knocked it out of the park!

The Foo Fighters were really great! Dave Grohl really went off!!!

The Who was AMAZING! Roger was very kind to stop and talk after - and you could tell he was really honored to have had such a tribute to their music!

    GREAT night VH1! THANK YOU!

    LOVED LOVED LOVED it!

  • Crosby Says:

Screw you, David!!!!! Fu-cking Divas over THE WHO?????!!!! You’re fu-cking stoned bro!!!!!

  • Jonathan Says:

See the earlier comments about the song listing being out of order… they opened with “Young Man Blues” and had Gaz Coombes on “Bargain” (where the Foo Fighters Drummer sang the slow part).

I flew in from NYC just to see this show, and never thought that the Pavilion was so small.. such an intimate show!!! I’ve now seen them 12 times since 79, and never in so small a venue!!

Re: “Re-Take’s” - The Who had to re-take “You’d Better, You Bet” as described below, and Mila Kunis had to re-take her intro, as they forgot to spotlight her the 1st time.

Re: Smashed Equipment - Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) - smashed guitar & the drummer for the Flaming Lips trashed his drum kit.

Highlight(1) - Pearl Jam… I saw Eddie sing Pete’s songs @ Cargenie Hall in ‘94. The feeling he delivered to this set was incredible.
Highlight(2) - Adam Sandler’s tribute to The Who, sung to the tune of “Magic Bus”… “Keith Moon, their Lucky Charm… after 30 years, we still miss that he’s gone…”
Highlight(3) - The extended version of “My Generation”

Low Point - Gaz Coombes on “Bargain” maybe it was technical difficulties, because sometimes he sounded fine… other times, you couldn’t hear him at all, and he didn’t seem to know all the words.

Gripe!! There was no official T-Shirt for the show!! Only concert staff got shirts saying “VH1 Rock Honors The Who”… all of the merchandise sold was available on-line at their website.

Overall, an amazing night…airfare ($$$), hotel ($$), car rental($)… Show- PRICELESS!!
VH1 - Thank you for an unforgettable experience…

He did his time. He didn’t make a big issue out of it. My friends on http://www.sugarbabydate.com love him very much. It is famous rich men seeking affairs site

  • Bell Boy Says:

I have seen The Who eight or nine times. Pearl Jam was huge; more would have been better. The The singer for the Foo Fighters totally butchered Bargain. Mix in few rehearsals dude and lay off the teleprompter it was truly embarrassing… Though Dave Grohl was great.

What happened to an extended jam featuring Pete, Roger, Zack, Eddie V, Dave Grohl, and the others at the end? This type of show does not happen that often and I think they (the producers, Pete, or whomever) really missed an opportunity for greatness. Oh well, maybe the “stars” will realign in November at the Nokia. Rest easy Kieth and John, hopefully they will try again; before they get old…

  • The Seeker Says:

Won the trip from VH1. Airfare, Roosevelt Hotel, limos, and the show. Plus I got a Rock Honors t-shirt with a Union Jack on the back!

This was my sixth time seeing THE WHO and it was rockin. The venue was the smallest I’ve ever seen them in and it was awesome. Nothing can beat front row center (Coloumbus 2006) but this was close to it.

Foo Fighters were great - the cover of Bargain was better than some posts say.

The bass player for Flaming Lips was a tribute to Entwhistle with the sleleton suit.

Smashed drums and smashed guitars were a great tribute.

Pearl Jam and the Quad songs were amazing. Almost as good as the Fallout Shelter tour (the real Quadrophenia tour) in 1973.

Adam Sandler’s lyrics were spot on.

Finally, the big guns came out. My generation sounded like they had just remade Live at Leeds.
WGFA was jaw dropping, I was hoping to saee a power slide out of Pete but I guess his knees weren’t up to it.

All in all, the tribute rocked but nobody can outwho THE WHO.

The WHO = The original BONECRUNCHERS of Rock N Roll !
Who the f*** is Sean Penn to be on the same stage . I wish Pete would have abby hoffmanned his sorry behind off stage!

  • Reed Says:

Why does “CIRCLES” not get played everyday on every rock station…..I don’t know. What a hugely underrated WHO/Rock song.

  • Matty G Says:

Vh1 should be comended for bringing real music back into the spotlingt……..Next year, The Clash!!!!!

  • Jackie Says:

It was a great rock show last night! Grohl and Vedder were priceless, as always!…..
Oh, and by the way, “VH1 Divas” sucks……

  • mark Says:

The production value was a joke!!!!! Next time you might want to try to light for the cameras not the audience. Not sure who the Lighting designer was but he/she should know better. I’m glad The Who received this honor they deserve it. TO BAD THE PRODUCTION WAS S–T!!!!!!

  • iGotOnMyBackpack79 Says:

Guess i’m the only one who loved The Flaming Lips perfomance? I’m new to the rock genre so i’m just soaking all this `(#%*))#&$@%^^`@ in. Hip Hop is boring now so it’s time to move on to something new. Foo Fighters were great. Pearl Jam too. The Who showed the young cats how to rock and i loved watching it. PeAcE!

Vh1 wasnt able to creat t-shirts for the fans, the least you could do is make a dvd for the fans. if u have a big enough budget to make a show for flavor flav, im sure you can create a dvd of this great concert….im pretty sure the dvd will make a bigger profit for vh1 than flavor flav ever will
