VH1′s 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs Ever

The arguments go on forever. Is old school better than new school? What’s the hardest gangsta joint around? Which MC has the hippest flow? And, of course: what’s the drop-dead deep-ass dopest rap track ever made? Well, we can all chill on that last question for awhile. Our 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs countdown has the answer. It’s part of a ramp-up to this year’s rather incredible Hip Hop Honors show.

All summer long fans have been voting on the list. VH1 combined their opinions with those of hip-hop culture vultures and next week, for five nights, the show runs down the ranking, offering interviews with artists and pundits, breaking out classic footage, and dropping some superstar science on all the tracks involved. It airs Monday, September 29 – Friday, October 3 at 10 pm ET.

Now, the big question, which one made the top of the list? Was Public Enemy (check the video above) number 10 or number 1? Make the jump and find out.

This list is a joke…. Nas and Busta show up 40+ ??? Too Short didn’t even make the list!? Funky Cold Medina isn’t on the list! are you kidding me!

  2. kvnlnt says:

I could pull a better list out of my *~~^_^*@#!`_&+) and get closer to what reflects the “Greatest” hip hop songs ever.

  3. Lance says:

Who ever made this list is straight stupid and oviously doesnt listen to rap like wat the hell. How can u not put Tupac even in the top ten. Or Biggy. Or Outkast. Or Eminem. Or Wu-tang, and how can california not even be on the list it would be my top i mean come on Tupac and Dre on the same song. Who ever made this list need to get their ears checked. And I dont know how u can put Public Enemy number one there good but there not that good. This list is garbage

  4. Crstyle says:

With great shame & dismay… I have to say the culture we once truly called “Hip Hop” is no more. For years the chant of “Hip Hop Is Dead” has been ringing louder & louder. At first… it was the music that was suspect. Now it seems everything that is involved with Hip Hop is dying as well. Not only is the substance laking in the music, but even in it’s politics & literature. Example… this 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs List… It needs to be changed to the 100 Most Popular Hip Hop Songs List! There was a time Hip Hop was a reflection of people, their culture, their times & lifestyle. The only problem is… when I look in the mirror “I don’t recognize it anymore”.

  5. Charles says:

Seems like they wanted to put a one song per artist limit on the list, then they added a few *really bad* songs and artists from the past few years just to get them to perform at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors ceremony.

  6. Belle says:

I HATE this list. I it BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who did they get to make this list? Some old due in the basement. To be honest I just briefly looked at it. It was so bad there was no reason to look at it anymore.

  7. John says:

WHAT! First, ask Chuck D the difference between Hip Hop and rap. DMC “Walk This Way”? How about every-any other song….And how can Tribe Called Quest be left out?!!! Or Digable Planets! You ever hear “Blowout Comb”!

What is “the best” anyway…..its tricky

Another piece of media garbage…that I got sucked into.

    Rock the bells-J

  9. Evan says:

This list is a joke. Here’s the correct list of top 10:
    Lose Yourself, Eminem
    Dear Mama, 2pac
    In da club, 50 Cent
    Big Papa, Biggie
If I ruled the world, Nas
    Scenario, A Tribe Called Quest
Don’t wanna be a playa, Big Pun feat. Joe
    Dead Presidents, Jay-Z
Gin & Juice, Snoop Doggy Dogg
Aint Nothing but a G Thang, Dr. Dre

People don’t want to recognize that hip hop evolved and the best songs were not from the first era.

  10. big bo says:

    Where is little wayne

  11. truby says:

Old school is by far better than this new stuff!

  12. Evan says:

What lil wayne song would be deserving of the top 10?

  13. Evan says:

Truby, I agree that the new stuff is awful. But the best hip hop came from the mid to late 90s.

  14. Old School Fan says:

This list is garbage… how bout Mobb Deep – Shook Ones Part II, Eric B & Rakim – Know the Ledge, Lost Boyz – Renee, etc. But no we have Chamillionaire Ridin’. Are there any real MCs left?!?! Give me something other than a beat and a hook. And honestly, one song per artist? BUST!!!!

  15. Old School Fan says:

Oh and how did Wu Tang’s Triumph not make it…

  16. Cattivo says:

Now come on! Anyone out there who remembers KrissKross’ “Jump, Jump” knows that song should be in the list! EVERYBODY and their momma was jumping to that! And let’s not forget the faship trend they started!

  17. BigU says:

I usually don’t make too big a deal about list like this because they are all subjective. But, let me philosophise for a sec.

First, in all due respect to todays youth, if you’re really not at least, say, 35 or so, or a real student of the hip hop game, you really cannot appreciate the music that came before what we have today. The 80′s and early 90′s should be generally regarded as far superior to today’s hip hop.
Secondly, if we’re talking about “greatest” hip hop songs, the criteria should be songs that were not only popular (In Da Club), but groundbreaking (Rapper’s Delight), revolutionary (Walk This Way), trendsetting (OPP) and meaningful (Fight The Power), to name a few.
That being said, I think the omissions of You Gotta Big Mouth by Whodini, Summertime by Will Smith, Jump by Kriss Kross, are noteworthy.
Also, check if you will this. Anyone who really knows, knows “Sucker MCs” and “Rockbox” by RunDMC are far better hip hop jams than “Walk This Way”, but “Walk” had that cross over appeal. The same could be said for many of Tupac’s songs that didn’t make it over “I Get Around.”
Overall, it’s a good list, but more of the old school joints should have been considered.
TOP 5? “Rapper’s Delight,(You gotta give props to the one that basically started it all) ” “Fight The Power (The anthem),” “The Breaks (Because it was the joint back in the day, and really led to what we know as hip hop today),” Walk This Way (The crossover)” and “In Da Club (Come on, who didn’t groove to that?)”
Finally, as far as arrangment goes, probably the two best put-together hip hop joints ever are Rakim’s “I Know You Got Soul” and Tupac’s “How Do You Want It?” Don’t believe me? Go check them out, then you’ll see why Rakim was voted the Number 1 rapper a few years back. Peace!

  18. Charles says:

    BigU says it all.

  19. Andrew says:

These kind of lists are the best at starting debates and nothing else. I am not a huge DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince fan, but wasn’t Parent’s Just Don’t Understand a huge cross over mega hit?

  20. T.O says:

i think this list is pretty good. but come on how can you not put Changes by Tupac in the list? i think that song should be at least in the top 20. it has meaning in it and talks about many issues at that time. and on top of that it is just a really great song!

  21. lawrence says:

Did you ever posted your profile on a celebrity and millionaire dating site called ____seekamillionaire.com_____. I saw your profile there few weeks ago.

  22. Larryo says:

EPMD should be in teh top ten!

  23. Steven says:

    Dear VH1,

This list is blasphemous and disrespectful to all Hip Hop fans. No way should Master P appear on any list that includes the word “Great.” 50 Cent’s “In da Club” is ranked better than NaS, and Pete Rock? How do you justify this?

Leave it to VH1; trying to rank a genre of music youdon’t show on their channel anyway. Would BET make a list of “Greatest Hair Bands” of all time? No Way. Your list sucks. Please never attempt to do this again. If you do, call me. I will come to your rescue.

  24. E says:

I can’t believe this list doesn’t include “I got it made” by Special Ed

  25. icecold says:

this list is complete garbage. without goin into major detail i will sum it up like this. VH1 tried to spead to love around many hip hop artist when makin this list. plus went the commercial route. in reality artist like run dmc, nwa, eric b and rakim, ll cool j, public enemy, jay z, ect deserve about 5-8 slots themselves. which of course would drop many off the list.

    -ie. eric b and rakim-
    i aint no joke
    microphone fiend
    my melody
    eric b for president
    i know ya got soul

hip hop classics!!! the gripe could go on and on with other artists

  26. ike says:

This list is waaaaay to commercial, with that said, ‘Summertime” by Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince wasn’t on there (what?) ,”Big Pimpin” by Jay-Z & UGK was omitted (huh?) and others but there should have been some REAL research done by the people, i.e. going to different parts of the country (NY, L.A, Oakland, Philly, Miami, Atl) and ask the people what they listened to “back in the day’.

  27. A Concerned Citizen says:

VH1 is garbage. The Viacommunists must have made this list…its an embarrassment and a fraud. You should be ashamed of yourselves. This might quite possibly be the worst “best” list of all time. This looks like it was put together by someone from the TRL staff. Ridiculous. Nonsense. Tomfoolery. Absurd.

  28. brandon says:

where is the Tupac songs? Brenda got a baby…..aint mad at ya……keep ya head up……come on

  29. Cin says:

Why is L’Trimm even on this list? It is a travesty that Pete Rock & CL Smooth are not in at least the top 50! Cam’ron over They Reminisce Over You??? Certainly, you jest!

  30. Kyan says:

Where’s Will Smith’s “Summertime” and why is Common’s I used to love her so low on the list, and don’t get me started on Slick Ricks “chidrens story” being # 61….this is some B.S.!!!

  31. Cin says:

Wackness brought to you by the same network who gave us Flavor of Love…’Nuff Said!

  32. UrKiddingRight?? says:

This is why “Hip-Hop” is DEAD. This list is garbage. How did “Supersonic” even make it on the list? I was bumpin “Paul Revere” when JJ Fad was spittin that hot garbage.

  33. 757 Alum says:

this list is garbage. straight garbage. where is the bridge is over, summertime, the symphony, rock the bells, self destruction. i’ll stop here because the list could go on an on.

  34. Orbital Strife says:

Yeah, this list is not working for me. Pete Rock and CL Smooth- #90? UTFO’s “Roxanne”- 84?

Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid In Full” not in the top ten? The Treacherous Three is not even on this list.

Obviously, there’s nobody who really knows Hip Hop/Rap that voted on this list.

  35. AISHA says:

I WAS BORN IN 1987 and I don’t agree with this list. They tried to incorporate new millenium and missed a lot of classics, and picked the wrong song for some of these artist and in A horrible order.

Three Six Mafia- Hard Out Hear For A Pimp…They won a Oscar, but the song was not a classic. Any Three Six Mafia fan will agree.

    EASY E

“Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” PETER GUNZ AND LORD TARIQ

Yeah, Mjg And 8ball Are Legends

And So Is Ugk And Goodie Mob

Trick Daddy Feat Trina “nann Ni**a”
    69 Boyz- “toostie Roll”
Dj Kool “let Me Clear My Throat”

    …..i Can Keep Going…

  36. Hayze says:

Im a little dissapointed that “NINE- Whatchu Want” didnt make the list. Its an excellent song definitly had a sweet sound compared to some of the stuff that ended up on the list. I agree with a lot of it, Im just dissapointed in some of the choices. What ever happened to NINE anyways? If you havent heard it, get it!

  37. Hunter E. says:

This list is complete garbage to anyone that knows anything about hip-hop. Apparently “Hot in Herre” is better than “Regulate”, Definition”, and “One Love”? This is news to me. And Where is Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II”? Maybe they had to take it out to make room for “Lean Back”. Disgusting.

  38. HipHopLives says:

Im sorry but this list isn’t right, Gangstarr and Big L both need to be on here for it to be the top 100 of hip hop, both of them changed hip hop in a way that will never be duplicated.

  39. HipHopLives says:

After reading all these comments im not to suprised the list is so inadequate. the only one who got the real point was BigU and they even missed a few of the most influencials of hip hop, I mean really people. No Gangstarr or Big L or KRS-One like wtf. seriously . Gangstarr is probably one of the biggest names in hip hop next to Wu. and Dead Prez shoulda made the list along with if you want some new school Army of the Pharoahs. this is )^&_#^*^#`_%~@&% ing sad.

  40. hauder says:

the fact that you omitted N.W.A.’s F**k the Police (among numerous other classic cuts,) makes this list fake as hell, you should be ashamed of yourself. J.J. Fad? are you kidding me? You’ve got to be kidding me, right? J.J. Fad is a straight joke……… for real though, House of Pain??? O.k., so when do you clowns pull out the real list? This one should be spooled up on a roll of toilet paper, no, wait, I wouldn’t even wipe my backside with this straight garbage……

  41. Mr. McKoy says:

This List will be stricken from the record for the simple fact that TROY is number !%@$~_(!!(~@&!*( in 90
50 Cent has no business on this list…..in my opinion there shouldnt be any songs from the late 90′s or this decade on this list, minus a few artists…..Hip Hop is nothing like it used to be.

  42. Mrs.Maldonado says:

I have to say I’m a little dissapointed. Sick Rick “Children’s Story” is not even in the top 50. Thats ridiculous!! I feel Pete Rock & C.L Smooth should have been alot higher in rank as well. Whle I’m happy that “The Show” made it on the list. What about Ladi Dadi by Doug .E. Fresh & Slick Rick? Also; if L’Trimm (who I liked back int he day) are on here. Why isn’t Vanilla Ice? Ice Ice Baby was the jam!! and everybody knows it!. People talk about Vanilla Ice but I know when that song was played everbody DANCED!! Oh and J.J FAD deserves to be on here. Eric B for President.?? X-Clan, I can go on & on. Oh well.

  43. Mrs. Maldonado says:

***I’m just saying based on the list obviously the criteria was most popular, maybe? I don’t know but if some of these songs they put on this list got on. then Ice Ice Baby should be on. Moving on.
Ok I like Kanye but #20 and Slick Rick is #61. COME ON, I think I’m sick now. Biggie, Tupac & Jay-Z one song each. REALLY?? ok ,now I see.
No Fat Boys, Das EFX, Craig Mack ,MC Shan shame shame shame

  44. IT says:

    Absolutely horrible.

  45. Satonya says:

Who did u talk to before this list was made????? It could not have been TRUE Hip Hop fans. This is so mainstream I am disgusted with the choices that were made. example there is NO WAY AT ALL that Get Ur Freak On shold be 16 before the songs you have listed at 21,22,23,24,25,30,32 and51
I could go on but why because no one gives a F@#

  46. Ricky says:

I think either Ja Rule’s Always on Time, Put it on Me or Im Real should be on this

  47. Jeanette Gardner says:

  48. Kevin says:

    Weak list!

NO KRS?? NO HIP HOP ALLSTARS..y’all remember that…”Self destruction! ya headed for self destruction!” No Craig Mack “FLAVA IN YA EAR!” No HEAVY D????

    weak list

  49. Kevin Again! says:

No BDP?? zero boogie down productions seriously?? EPMD!? The crossover?? wtf! your list sucks!

  50. chris says:

this is definitely the “radio jams” version of hip-hop. but I do agree with some of the songs. cl smooth SHOULD’VE DEFINITELY BEEN HIGHER

  51. OGBobbyJohnson says:

Uhh uh, Run DMC Sucker MC’s. Nas-Made You Look

  52. OGBobbyJohnson says:

Oh hell yeah, That Wu Truimph Joint is fire. They dont come up for air, all Mc’s bang that joint. Tupac How do You want it, Butter! Incredible, talking about mixing R&B and hip hop. KC and JO JO served that with Pac on a platter. Rakim and Eric B – Eric B. For President….Enough Said. Its all good though, because the show is real cool, it is bringing back incredible memories from an Old Hip Hop head. I can see all them G’s are eating good, Kool Moe looks like Biggie. And speaking of Biggie, come on now “One More Chance” I have never heard a dude bust a slow and fast version of a song and make them sound damn near completely different but have the same lyrics. WOW!
Bottom line, I love hip hop. Grew up on it along with Parliamnent Funkadelic. When the G-Funk Era hit with the P-Funk Era it was on. Drop another diamond on us Dr. Dre. One more, C-Murda… nothing but a

  53. Josh says:

    Um….California Love?????!!!!!

  54. bopteest says:

This list is an absolute disgrace to the whole entire hip hop culture. Next time you VH1 list makers want to throw together a half &`_+@!~_$~@`**# piece of garbage like this don’t, instead let the real fans of hip hop make that decision for themselves.

  55. Facethe "Don" says:

That was the worst countdown ever ,how can you you put any body above jigga, pac, weezy,or k-west ,andre3000,common,bigboi and as far as rap that makes you think it is a lot of rap ,rapped that is, a lot better than the top 10 that was picked, this was not a tribute to rap pioners, but a count down of the top 100 hip hop tracks. and as child of rap VH1 count down sucked!!!!!!

  56. Facethe "Don" says:

The next time you lames @ VH1 put out a 100 list contact me @afacen125@comcast.net maybe it will be true to hiphop. you guys suck! I mean you realy suck!.

  57. Face the"Don" says:

jay jay fad should be off,and le trim(cars that go boom) replaced by flava in ya ear, and slam by onyx

  60. Tony says:

first off PE does NOT deserve the top spot! What a joke that is to begin with….

Not once was Gangstarr mentioned in your list….

Here is what I would move up to anywhere higher on the list than they are:

Biz Markie – Just A Friend (classic hip hop song at least makes top 50 in my book)
Warren G and Nate Dogg – Regulate (Easily makes top 25, instant classic)
Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth – T.R.O.Y. (Anyone heard the remix by Mr. Cheeks? Pete Rock puts it down in this song)
Geto Boys – Mind Playing Tricks on Me (should be in the top 10)
Wu Tang – C.R.E.A.M. (Top 5 hip hop song, no doubt about it)
Here is what I would remove from your list:
Lil Jon and East Side Boy – Get Low (What a horrible track with shotty production by Lil Jon, what else is new….every one of his songs sounds the same, like Jimmy Buffett
Three 6 Mafia making the list is astonishing, they suck outside of Popppppin my Collar
The Digable Planets song you list isn’t even close to the best song on that album…..TRUE hip hop heads would not only have that album but know what I’m talking about
Outkast – B.O.B. ( How this song even makes this list is beyond me….far from their best song and not even the best song on that album once again)

anyone wants a real list should look into more underground hip hop of people who weren’t named and not all this old crap……..don’t get me wrong Iove old school hip hop: Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, All eyez on me, etc.

  61. Naya says:

    this list needs some revision

  62. Naya says:

I was born in ’88 and know this list sucks.

    Where is California Love??

and I agree that Thuggish Ruggish Bone could have been on here too. list is missing some pretty good songs.

  63. lilfel says:

how in the world is shook ones from mobb deep not on here, easily top 20 and didnt make top 100, wtf.

  64. Bad Bimr says:

Where are some of the clssics? Only one tune from each artist? This is a BS list.

    Where is:
    Neucleus – Jam On It
Luniz – I Got Five On It
    Whodini – Friends
    Disco Three – Fat Boys
Africa Bambaataa – Looking For The Perfect Beat
    Twilight 22 – Electric Kingdom
LL Cool J – Jack The Ripper

Instead yof these classics you have songs by
Lil Jon, Lil Wayne and other BS Rappers. I am amazewd you did not have Soulja Boy on this crap list

  65. Waxman2 says:

Of all the Tupac songs, I get around?! I can think of 5 that are better…Dear Mama comes to mind.

And Straight Outta Compton over F*** tha Police? I woulda picked the latter.

And where is Scarface? I never seen a man cry shoulda made this list!

And Ice Cube makes this list twice but Tupac and Biggie only make it once each?!!! Ice Cube has some great hits but lets be real, based on what I see on this list, half of Tupac and Biggie’s catalog is better than a quarter of this stuff.

Way too many recent songs on here….

  66. L Diddy says:

This list is okay. However, I do believe there were many omissions and mistakes. My top ten would have been:

I agree with a lot of the comments listed about the chosen song Change by Tupac was a much better song. How about Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of steet? Deejaying exemplefied!

  67. MarkFromTha215 says:

Here is a list of songs that should have been on the list

  68. L Diddy says:

Honestly, this list looks like it was put together by a lot of White people whom only know of hip hop from videos seen on MTV.

On second look, I wondered where was Father MC, Onxy, Positive K, Poor Righteous Teachers, Das Efex, KrissKross, Chubb Rock, Threacherous Three, Ja Rule, etc…

I do give you credit for putting the Funky Four plus One on the list.

  69. L Diddy says:

The more I read the list and the comments, the more I am convinced that this list was awful. As BigU and others have commented, no Gangstar or Lost Boyz or Mr. Cheeks! How about Brand Nubian or at least Grand Puba! Ala Mode are you with me?

Maybe BET can do a better job with a topic like this!

  70. Hayze says:

Wow its funny I didnt even notice that theyre is absolutly no KRS-One in the list which is funny to me seeing as everytime that sorry list came back on or cut to commercial on VH1 they showed “stickers on a wall” and one was very clearly KRS. What is the deal with that? He is among the most influential rap artists of all time! And no Pharcyde! Blasphemy. Some of the songs that made the list make me sick. Kid n’ Play, Nelly and no Pharcyde or KRS? Lean back and no Back in the day? Next time you guys up at VH1 decide to do a best of Hip Hop, how bout you take a vote or something instead of letting the white fatcats in the corporate meetings decide what made hip hop what it is!

  71. funky231 says:

man 2pac shouldve won top 10 atleast.

  72. Tee says:

49 Boogie Down Productions / My Philosophy…KRS is on there homie…
And only ONE Nas song, and ONE pac song, and One 1/2 Biggie song come onnnnnnnn
and Meth & Mary # 44..gimmie a break that is the ULTIMATE love song after I need Love…I dance to Meth & Mary at my wedding..and why is LIL John on the list? and BIZ is merely 100, yeah they were surely smoking

  73. L Diddy says:

    Feel the Heart Beat!

    That Jazzy Sensation!

    This list is definitely lacking!

    More money, more problems

    Lights Camera Action

    And who could forget

Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde! They rock the party side by side!

  74. Tee says:

Dwyke– Guru and Nice & Smooth
Lost Boys-Lex, Coups, Beamers & Benz
MC Lyte (I had the hair cut) Paper thin
    Brand Nubian-Slow Down
Punks jump up to get beat downnnnnnnn…
Okay I’ll Stop, time to go home now…lol

  75. cdp76 says:

Now I am “REALLY” suprise that Rob Base & Dj Easy Rock didn’t make the list. Or should I say “TOP THE LIST”. You cannot tell me “IT TAKES TWO” doesn’t have the most air play (even to this day). That song measures with Geroge Clinton’s “Atomic Dog” as the block party, pep rally, sports venue and club anthem. I am really suprise. Also Where are the GETO BOYS huh!?! “My Mind’s Playing Tricks On Me” was a BILLBOARD top 10.

  76. Marky Mark says:

No Rodney O and Joe Cooley??? JOKE

  77. andrew says:

where is california love 2 pac?? thats gotta be top 10 or 5.

  78. c. robinson says:

I really hope someone comes out with a real list. Where is Self Destruction? One of the greatest compilations ever. Not number one? Not even on the list?Do you all relly believe In Da Club will be remembered longer than OPP. Pure, to put it nicely, GARBAGE ! The list had too many hot right now people. Too many forgetable songs. Should have been more about the song than pleasing the artist.

  79. Peter says:

    This list is @&^#%!%&`$&!^__!

  80. marcuspiz says:

    Bad Bimr:
Your list is on point!! Thank you for listing some REAL, REAL FOUNDATION of hip-hop!!! Man you listed some groups I didn’t think about should be on the list. And sorry but those who think songs like “Dear Mama” from Pac & “One Mic” from Nas, “Big Pimpin” by Jay-Z- they have 50 million songs better that could have made the list!
Band Nubian, Jungle Brothers (a better song), Gangstarr, 45 KIng, Busy Bee, Rodney-O & Joe Cooley, Boogie Monsters, Grand Puba, D-Nice, Fat Boys, Too $hort, Luniz, etc. there’s alot of greats who got looked over!

Lil Wayne, Master P, Three-6 mafia, Lil Jon…Trash!!

  81. marcuspiz says:

Oops! Almost forgot Newcleus: “Jam On It”!!

  84. L Diddy says:

For those of you whom thought the Sugar Hill Gang was a one hit wonder, if you don’t know, you need to check out “8th Wonder” and see where Busta stole “I got them all in check!”

  85. L Diddy says:

By the way, MusicHead appears to have it on point!

  86. black stallion says:

i have so much to say about this list. it’s obvious that there wasn’t a criteria to make the list.

for rakim to have one song and it be in the low 20′s is bananas.

for jay-z to have one song is crazy.

they reminisce over you is a top 30 song.

i’m not a huge fresh prince fan, but for parents just don’t understand to be 96 isn’t accurate. it deserves to be in the top 50 atleast.

i can go on and on, but i just wanted to share a little bit of my beef.

this list was created, as many list are, to spark discussion. it isn’t by any means “the gospel”.

  87. nesto says:

yo what happen to kool g rap! the nicest rapper ever! with all his hits, yall couldnt put one up there? and wheres brand nubian, onyx, main source, stetsasonic, mobb deep, mantronix and mc tee, tee la rock and where the hell is the synfony? yall need do start over and do it again!!!!

  88. rollo says:

    My top ten

    1. “You must learn” (extended version) BDP
    2. “Why is that?” BDP

    8. “Tribal Jam” Xclan
    9. “Ambition as Rider” 2pac
    10. “Sonic Jihad” Paris

  89. Tchaka says:

How can ‘F*ck he Police’ not be on the list? It deserves similar praise to ‘Strait Outta Compton’.

And I agree with Rollo below that BDP’s ‘You Must Learn’ should be up there.

‘Black Steel’ is also my favorite PE song, but I understand why it’s not up here. It didn’t have the same mainstream appeal as ‘Fight The Power’, ’911′s A Joke’, etc. But the strength behind the lyrics is undeniable intense.

  90. dan13l says:

Seriously, Who made this list. Where is BDP- Bridge is Over, or Mc Shan-The Bridge.

  91. Darren says:

I don’t know who was truly in charge of this countdown, but there are quite a few songs that didn’t belong on this list……….and too many that didn’t make the list, how can you NOT put “The Symphony”, or “DWICK” on the list……shame on you Fab 5

  92. NYC Publicist says:

Who picked these songs? Alot of the songs picked from these artist werent event their greatest work. Where is KRS one? Too much missing…

  93. Jmeezy meez says:

    y is there only 1 2pac song
and y is Block is Hot on here….cmon now…coulda chose any other Wayne song

  94. Squeeze says:

Eric B and Rakim “I aint no joke”

Most of those songs that made their list all had videos for so i don’t totally disagree with their but VH1 needs to to do top 500 greastest hip hop songs of all time

  95. Squeeze says:

    Mobb Deep “Shook Ones”

M.O.P ” How about some hardcore’

Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince ‘ Summertime”
Doug E Fresh “Rising to the top”
    Ultramagnectic ” Ego tripping”

  97. Mary says:

I’m really disappointed in this count down. How did Dead Prez not make the list? Does VH1 not see how influential these two young men are? I agree with number one but to leave them off the list completely is just ridiculous.

  98. AYEL says:

Was a good list. but you have to include KOOL G RAPP every one on this list learned from him

  99. Gregg Calumet says:

I like N.E.R.D. a lot but “Lapdance” is not TOP 100 quality. I agree with a lot of other comments…who made this damn list??!?? Some songs are missing, some shouldn’t even be here, and some should be ranked higher. Common’s “I Used to Love H.E.R.” is a top 20 hip-hop song; so is Pete Rock’s “T.R.O.Y.” Foxy Brown’s “I’ll Be” is not a classic…I’m sorry.

Mobb Deep – “Shook Ones, Pt. 2″
Craig Mack – “Flava In Your Ear” Remix
    Camp-Lo – “Luchini”
    Jay-Z – “Dead Presidents II”
Nas – “The World Is Yours”
    OutKast – “Elevators”
Notorious B.I.G. “One More Chance” Remix

  100. squeeze says:

    What happen to

Lords Of The Underground ” Chief Rocka”
    Kurtis Blow ” AJ Scratch”
    Black Rob “Whoa”
    Run D.M.C “Sucka MC’S”
    3rd Bass ” Gasface”
    DMX ” Party UP”

And is that song by PM Dawn even a rap song?

  101. nino says:

Can’t believe they didn’t have “dear Mama” by 2pac, “Song cry” by Jay-Z, murder was the case by Snoop, Never Seen A Man Die by scarface, 2nd round K.O. by canibus,or any UGK song. This list was done by mainstream

  102. Chales says:

I would really like if they released a Cd with all the song on them

  103. Tony Burch says:

Get Ur Freak On, before Geto Boys…?!?!?!? Where’s Akynele? What is going on with the Nas, Jay-Z, and Pac picks… seriously…. And exactly how did ‘Hate It or Love It’, ‘The Block is Hot’, and ‘Hot n Herre’ even make this list? Oh and the Kid n Play addition loves it… yea? I demand that the HipHop Council denotes all of your authority of HipHop related decisions in the future.

  104. ALEX says:

Who expected vh1 to pick the top 100. Top 100 hip hop songs at that, I would belive the list if it was top 100 pop songs ever.. Rakim wasn’t even in the top 20 What a joke..

  105. Dr Len says:

    Where is Nelly’s Country Grammar?

  106. SimonRous says:

How do you make a 100 greatest hip hop song list and not include any Aesop Rock. I mean None Shall Pass, Daylight, Drawbridge, No Regrets, and The The Yes and the Yall are all songs that should have been at least nominated. He has some of the best lyrics in all of Hip Hop its like +*^#__`!)!@`%@+% in poetry.

  107. yvonne says:

Well i’ma be blunt…. Where is Ja Rule?! Why isn’t he on this list. I mean he did make some good music.
L’trimm who the hell is that ???

  108. Brianna says:

1st of all you guys need to stop complaining on what was not on the list and what was. if you really are in to hip hop like I am, you would of known all the songs that were on the list. it was called 100 greatest HIP HOP SONGS . not rap!!! so calm down. i for one will say that it was a good countdown. i knew all the sopngs, yeah there were better songs out there but if you really listen to hip hop like i do you would understand y. hip hop isnt just jayz lil wayne 2pac and biggie. their good as hell but c`mon.
it was a good countdown so i give VH1 there props . d3uc3$

  109. Steven says:

    In response to Brianna,

“it’s called the 100 greatest hip hop songs, not rap.”

If you really knew your hip hop as you claim you do, you would know that theirs no difference in the music. Hip hop is a culture, rap is the music that represents the culture of hip hop. There are elements of hip hop Emceeing (rappig) DJing, Breakin (Dancin) and Graffiti art. If you do know your hip hip hop, then you should know this line…”Rap is something you do, hip hop is something you live.” That sums it up for your poor confused soul.

    BTW…this countdown sucks.

  114. Spike says:

  115. danny says:

what happened to nas – ny state of mind…..

  116. James Thole says:

Most of the songs on this list had sick flow. I would have chosen a different song by Nas however. New York State of Mind to be exact.

  117. bubba says:

T.I.’s “WHAT YOU KNOW” is a way better song thans some of the top songs on this list….where is california love??….also MASE has no place on this count down!!

  118. VH1 No More says:

I just watched that crap of a too 100 hiphop songs show. Please don’t do that again. Stick to what you know. Please!!!!

  119. Theresa says:

This countdown is dumb. Now I am a fan of Rap music, what in the hell is Hip Hop? You cannot and should not infuse the 2. This countdown is wack. There is a lot of people and groups that should not be on this countdown. I like VH-1, but after this I think I am DONE. Who in the hell counted down the music??? So So So So So hurt.

    That should have been #1

  126. Tee Yea Teach You says:

I love Hip Hop. Oh, I love Hip Hop. I’m just so glad that they didn’t pick Soulja Boy’s song as the Number One Greatest Hip Hop song of all because that has a huge huge different song compared to Hip Hop if you really listen to 90 Percent of these songs off the List and THEN LISTEN TO HIS SONG TO SEE IF IT’S HIP HOP TO YOU.

  127. ben says:

No Lost Boys on there?????? This list is garbage

  146. UncleJayFromHarlem says:

Wow… Now, I’ve done HEARD it all! This list is str8 trash to the third power! Speaking of which, “The Power” by Chill Rob G wasn’t even included (tho Snap! stole the song and it was a bigger hit). Many of u already hit the nail on the head when u mentioned WHY people like Craig Mack’s “Flava In Ya Ear”; The Pharcyde’s “Passing Me By”; Kris Kross’ “Jump”; B.I.G.’s “One More Chance/Stay With Me”; Wu-Tang Clan’s “Triumph”; LL Cool Jay’s “Around The Way Girl”; Audio Two’s “Top Billing”; MC Shan’s “The Bridge”; Ultra Magnetic’s “Ego Trippin’”; Salt N’ Pepa’s “My Mike Sounds Nice”; Luke’s “I Wanna Rock”; EPMD’s “So Wat Cha Sayin’”; Public Enemy’s “Rebel Without A Pause”; Gangstarr’s “Mass Appeal”/”DWYCK”/”Just To Get A Rep”; Slick Rick’s “Monalisa”/”Hey Young World”; Ahmad’s “Back In Tha Day”; Del The FunkE Homosapien’s “MistaDobalina”; or Souls of Mischief’s “93 ‘Til Infinity” did not even touch the list! I agree that a track should be at least 10-15 years strong before it can be considered the best! Sh**, I woulda even took J.T. Money’s “Who Dat” over some of these awful choices! I demand a recount!!!!! I hope they do it better next time! VH-1 has fallen off!!!

  147. Brian says:

No Dead Prez! You included all this cotton candy crap from the ’80s and no Dead Prez?

  148. CHRIS GEARY says:

Love the list but you have one thing wrong!!! I will guarantee if you play Outkast “Rosa Parks” anybody that listens to rap will get excited and name the artist. I don’t care if you are 80 years old or 12 years old!!! Def number one and the is no arguments from anybody except Flava Flav and Chuck D!!!

  149. danny69 says:

wow there should be more tupac

  150. anthony says:

    Horrible list plain and simple
First off tupacs i get around is a great song but there are better pac songs such as so many tears, old school, brendas got a baby ect. and also stan by eminem is better thatn most of the songs after it, no disrespect to any artists, but this list is horrible its like a 10 yr old made it

  151. miranda says:

Ay Yo quit saying that lil john gave hip-hop a “boost” because he doesnt even have a song with a hip-hop genre wut he has is “crunk” also I think that in da club should be replaced with back down. i think these songs should have been included:

    1. Any song off dre’s album THE Chronic ( +%(!#@%)%$#(~+(# in inexscusable!)
    2. The Weed Song- Bone thugz (that song is +%(!#@%)%$#(~+(# in awesome!)
    3. Feel Me Flow- Nughty By Nature (duh!)
    4. Shook ones part 2 (Duh!)
    5. Back in the day ( hip-hop str8up)
    6. Throw Ya Gunz- Onyx (amazing song)

theres lots of artists missing from here like dre, snoop, nate dogg, more wu-tang clan, and method man. hello bring the pain, m-e-t-h-o-d man and wut about the what buy biggie and methodman.
pac and biggie deserve 2 be on the list in the top 5 (period.)

  152. jay says:

the top ten has alot of songs that belong there but they are some better candidates, like Method Man and Marry J you are all i need, DMX ruff riders (the list goes on). There is a 14 year old girl that i never heard of before today further down the countdown.

  153. GINGER says:

    I LOVE IT………………………………………..

    MAKE AN OTHER EPISIODE SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  154. NYC10 says:

the 100 Hip Hop songs ever really suck. what happen to the Lords of the underground,

  155. Kathy says:

You have Kid’n’Play that had what? 2-3 hits? Where’s Will Smith??????

  156. Martie Mcfly says:

This list is a joke for real. Out of all the hot songs Tupac made they picked I get around Wow, what happen to Brenda’s got a baby, Keep yea head up, Shed so many tears and etc. To Short ” The Ghetto” and so many other great rappers. Man VH! need to get it together.

  157. LInEdRiVeS says:

I thought the list was pretty good but why wasn’t more Eminem on the list? How was “Loose Yourself” not on that list and what about “Without Me.” What about more Nas. He only had one song in there “One Love” from the record Illmatic. That whole record should have been on the list. “The World is Yours,” “Memory Lane,” “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Represent,” “It Ain’t Hard to Tell.” That record was rapped with more heart and experience that i have ever listened to. Nas and Eminem are in my opinion the most gifted MCs ever to walk the earth. I have never ever listened to 2 rappers who rap with more of their experiences in their voice.

  158. hate! says:

Open itunes…..randomise songs….make the “best list” out of whatever itunes pays

  159. Big Kay says:

    all old school..

  160. BAKER says:

  161. Mickey says:

I’ll give this list a C-, even though it did help me update my iPod a bit….

There are at least 100 different songs that coulda been on here.

  162. babydeegso says:

While I like the song on the list I am just surprised that “You Must Learn” (remix) didn’t make the list by KRS-1….how is that possible???

  163. santa clara says:

Passin me by, back in the day, around the way girl, and t.r.o.y. , just to start off are not on the list but bootsie a$$ $h!t like missy elliot makes the top 20??

  164. Zach B. says:

Where is more 2pac does Biggie Have on Pac let me think………….. NOTHING

  165. tom jerry says:

    No 2pac? wtf

  166. Shashank Chauhan says:

Wtf happened to “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem, “Hail Mary” by 2-Pac, “Can’t tell me nothing” by Kanye West, “Forgot ’bout DRE” by Dre & Eminem.

    Only 3 entries for Eminem..
Should’ve included The Real Slim Shady though..

  167. Melisa says:

I want this on CD(s)!!! Is it available or gonna happen? Please say “yeah”!!!

    Love These Songs!!!

  168. Joe Cool says:

There’s only one DMX song really there’s X gonna give it to ya. Thats da s*** right there and Get it on da floor with swizz beats. And only one Eminem songs and they choose stan da OK song he made. A new list needs to happen.

  169. Trapstar700 says:

Yo me and my room mate are debating who the ACTUAL HOST of VH1′s Top 100 Hip Hop Songs are…. He thinks it’s Ice-T. Although Ice-T was a guest on the show he was not the Host…. And I agree with you about Nas… That’s real sad… Help me out

  170. Joep Meloen says:

A+ ,2Pac , Dr dre, Eminem and Blackstreet No diggity ?
Why arent they not in this list ?
    Its a pitty !!!!!!

  171. Scott says:

List contains great songs, but rankings way off. I guys it isn’t the 100 Best Hip Hop artists in order, but songs…. you’d be hard pressed to find a group with harder lyrics than Blackstar!

  172. Justin says:

This list is wack, for the most part. Seriously, some songs in the top 20 that didn’t belong anywhere near there. *coughmissyelliotcough*

And the lack ofmore Tupac and DMX up there is crap.

I know the old school is classic and all, but there’s too much old school on this list.

  173. Michelle says:

Ok so when I seen this advertised I was like great can’t wait to watch it but as I was my disapointment grew.

Choices of songs weren’t great some artists weren’t even picked up.

But nether the less I did enjoy watching what some of the artists are doing now.

You did try VH1 but I think you should stick to what you know and that is POP! leave the greatest Hip Hop to the people who know what Hip Hop is about and not pop songs you here every day!

  174. Ric Trevino says:

Seriously, what a pityful list… This should be called 100 Greatest Rap/Pop list. Who picked these songs? And, the order of them is so WACK. You guys definitely dropped the ball, here are some CLASSIC in Hip-Hop tracks were missed:

    Audio Two – Top Billin
    Tribe Called Quest – Scenario
Lords of the Underground – Chief Rocka
    Brand Nubian – Slow Down
    Mobb Deep – Shook One’s
    Gang Starr – Mass Appeal
    Blackmoon – Got’cha Open
Souls of Mischief – 93’til Infinity
    Smifn’Wesson – Bucktown
    D.I.T.C. – Day One
Showbiz & AG – Soul Clap
    O.C. – My World

I just wrote these tracks down off the top of my head, any of the tracks listed above are true Hip-Hop greatest songs ever.

  175. Ryan says:

I wish a few commenters would have actually read the list. There are complaints that there is no Will Smith
(#96) or T.R.O.Y. (#90). The about.com list is actually a lot better than this one. This has a lot more of the pop rap songs, placing kid n play above a bunch of the most influential songs in hip hop history, like “I used to love H.E.R.” and “They Reminisce Over You.”. It’s always hard to come up with a top whatever list for such a huge genre – but there are a lot of songs on here that are just feel good songs and ended up on the pop charts. VH1 didn’t even start playing rap videos until the late 90s and then, they were Will Smith, Missy Elliot, and the other mainstream, gimmicky style hip hop songs.

  176. Xander Jimenez says:

You needed to put at least one song from the Fat Boys!

  177. Chris Canales says:

    Pretty bad list.

  178. This list is bad says:

More Pac and Biggie, a different song by Geto Boys, more eminem
    this list is garbage

  179. Brad says:

Oh, really? Regulate comes after a Kid & Play song? After CHAMILLIONAIRE? I don’t know where you got your new blood, VH1, but you are in serious need of a transfusion. This list is TERRIBLE after 20. You and BET clearly know zero about hip hop.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
