Examining Rehab 2 With Dr. Drew – Episode 4

Our scene-specific blog commentary on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew continues. Below, the doctor talks about the main points of the episode: Jeff’s despair, Tawny’s pseudo-self, Amber’s mom and that dramatic 911 call that concluded this week’s episode.

Do you think Jeff’s addicted to surgery?

It’s not that he’s addicted to surgery, it’s that some addicts use surgery as a way to justify their ongoing use. Celebrities go to lots of plastic surgeons, undergo lots of orthopedic procedures. Usually, at some point they’ll admit, “Yeah, I can get the Vicodin this way.” Jeff expects surgery to solve his problems. It’s a delusional insistence that surgery’s going to fix his pain, despite everyone telling him that surgery is not the treatment for the pain. It’s a delusional insistence that surgery is going to make him stand upright, when his surgeon told me that’s just not realistic. And then he begs no discussion – the surgeon tells him he’s going to walk straight, or he threatens to sue them. He leaves no alternative for intervention. In the meantime, this insistence that surgery is going to turn him back into a youthful Kenickie has sent his life on a very negative path. Things are not getting better, they’re getting worse. So why not try, just try, alternatives: aggressive physical therapy, yoga, being off opioids. And opioids, by the way, cause what’s called hyperalgesia, a worsening of chronic pain.

Is that what you mean when you say that the pain pills cause the pain?

Yes, they cause the pain to be intolerable. And of course, his addiction learns that if he’s experiencing pain, the addiction gets gratified. The addiction plays into it. And then he’s doing cocaine and drinking and he doesn’t tell his doctors that. Believe me, if he did, they’d be more aggressive about taking the pain medication away.

So essentially, Jeff’s holding onto his pain to hold out hope for surgery to hold out hope for pain pills, which will only bring more pain?

Yep, that’s what’s going on. It’s a conundrum. People like Jeff are so hard to treat. There are doctors out there that would call me cruel for making him come off the pain meds, and that we aren’t giving him enough main meds. In the meantime, he’s dying of addiction. His life is falling apart. It’s time for something different.

It seems like with you, Jeff’s testier than ever.

I’m fighting his disease and the disease is fighting back. I don’t take it personally, you should know. I have a huge affection for Jeff, and this is something I go through with patients all the time. This is the hard work. It’s the easiest thing to do, to say, “Let me write this prescription out for you. How much you want?” And then have him come back, smiling at me, “You’re the greatest doctor ever!” That’s easy. I can do that all day. That’s fun. This is no fun, but I know that’s all he needs.

Was there ever a temptation to be that kind of med-happy doctor?

Oh sure. I’m sure I was a co-dependent doctor most of my career. It’s the greatest thing in the world. The best patients are addicts when you’re giving them what they want. They show up to their appointments on time, they tell you you’re the best doctor. They may be going to three different doctors to get three different scripts, but you don’t know that! They’re wonderful when you’re giving them what they want. When you start to frustrate them, which is what they need, it’s hard work. I mean, it’s not very different than what I had to do with Gary when he wanted to be a treating professional. It’s like, “No. No. Hang in there. No. No. No.” And finally they turn. They come around. You have to be on the other side of that hundreds of times before you have the faith to do this work. Otherwise, you just cave. And, by the way, you need an entire team with you to withstand the onslaught of their disease.

It seems like you had to take on the role of mediator when you brought Vicki in to talk with Jeff. How was that?

I think I was more of a wall. I was just a source of limits and boundaries and structure. It’s really not a matter of right and wrong, it’s just getting the parties to exist in reality.

What prompts you to bring her in is his confession that he wants to kill her.

Yeah, if someone says they’re going to kill someone, you have to notify that person. There’s a whole legal proceeding that you have to go through, so rather than go through that, I said, “Let’s bring her in and handle it right now.” I didn’t believe he meant that, by the way, but I would still have to report it. It needed to be worked on at that moment. They were a heavy set of feelings Jeff was dealing with and we had to bring the situation back to reality.

You start calling Tawny her birth name Julie on this episode. Do you refer to her exclusively as Julie now?

It kind of comes and goes. Tawny is a woman of significant strengths and abilities, so we need her to embrace that and not shut her out entirely in favor of Julie. Mary Carey is a different story. I’m not sure Mary Carey has great strengths that help Mary Ellen. Tawny, on the other hand, is a very confident person that helps protect Julie. They need to be integrated.

When Tawny talks about sexual abuse, she follows it up with, “This is going to mess up his life.” Jeff’s response is “F*** him, he messed up your life.” Is that the healthy attitude to take?

Yeah, it helped Tawny at that moment. Protecting the victim amounts to blaming yourself for everything, and that’s not OK. Jeff really had it right.

Steven says, “I’m scared to leave this place. It’s safe here.”

We see that often and consider it real progress, because it’s realistic. Outside of a structure, he’s likely to use and it means he’s valuing his sobriety, he’s doing some work, he understands he’s fragile and he understands the power of his disease. When patients say things like that, it’s very positive.

Another major point is bringing Amber’s mom in for what you call a “life-saving intervention.” You’re referring not just to her life but her daughter’s too, right?

That was one of the more powerful moments for me. The mom hit bottom right in front of my eyes. I watched her go from scraping the bottom to landing on it. She gave up and went, “There’s no way for me to live. My daughter’s in treatment, I have no way to get drugs. This is as low as it gets.” I thought, wow. That was something I could work with. And she was admitted.

Is withdrawal more of a concern in older patients?

Oh yeah. People have heart attacks and strokes and pneumonia in withdrawal. Withdrawal is a dangerous process. As you get older, you can get complications. I ended up putting her in the hospital. She had all kinds of problems. She ended up in the I.C.U. A lot of this we couldn’t film because the hospital freaked out in the middle of it.

The episode ends with Jeff on the phone, telling the police that he’s being held against his will.

What follows that was one of the most stressful experiences of the entire show. It’s 12 at night and Jeff pulls this and all kinds of antics ensue. You talk to Vicki and apparently, he’s done this a number of times to her, too. It’s like calling 911 is his thing. It’s a strange impulse, but it’s a uniquely Jeff impulse. It’s just like Jeff, what the f***?

Dr. Drew, Do you think if you took Jeff on a “field trip” to meet with our wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan that it might give him a “reality” check on what pain those men and women are going through right now. Then maybe show him a few of them in therapy that are relearning how to walk with prosthetics. It should be a sobering moment for him to witness the sacrifices they made for him to whine.

For the record, I suffer from lumbar spinal stenosis and tore the ligaments along three areas of my back several years ago…I know about back pain.

Keep up the good work, Dr. Drew! You are making a difference for some!!

Melinda November 15, 2008 at 12:55 am

It’s clear that Julie (Tawny) is a very strong person and very intelligent. I believe she will come through this with grace and dignity.

Contessa November 15, 2008 at 1:49 am

Julie/Tawny you and I share the same birthday, being a strong woman myself, I know that you will come out on top and continue being a wonderful mother. Hang in there! You are admired for your strength, courage and your class. Lioness’ always prevail. Remember you are Fabulous!

Stephen I am impressed that you decided it was time to get treatment. You seem like a remarkable person and I wish you all the best. Life has some wonderful moments worth fighting for. I hope you find happiness in your career again without drugs and alcohol.

I wish you all the best!

Marie November 15, 2008 at 2:06 am

I am so happy that Tawny finally broke her silence. What a courageous thing to do! As a survivor myself I realize and understand how hard it is to talk about it and share it with the world.

Drew:
Stop allowing Jeff to manipulate the show. The 1st step of Rehab is recognizing a problem and wanting to change. Jeff doesn’t believe he has a problem due to using “prescription” drugs and isn’t ready to change. Moreover, Jeff wants more surgeries in order to get more drugs and to continue to justifiy his decision to continue to live in a doped up state. He stated that he’s attempted suicide multiple times by ODing. There is significant difference between wanting to “attempt” suicide for attention, and wanting to “commit” suicide to end it all. It’s called using a bullet, which guarantees success every time.

I have lived with back pain since 1988 after a work injury. For the first two years I was paralized and after numerous surgeries I now can walk but will have pain the rest of my life.I am on meds that I take as directed and nothing else.Jeff needs to realize that other people live with pain and take meds as they are perscribed without cocaine, alcohol,or anything else. They also don’t go around making everybody ‘s life miserable and don’t whine like a baby. Grow up Jeff and be a man!!!

JoJo November 15, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Hi All, First I wanna wish everyone in Rehab well and continued sobriety in the future. As far as Jeff goes, he does have ligitimate pain and Dr Drew saying that he thought Jeff should not ever be on opiods or have back durgery again was in my opinion, outta line. Yes Jeff has more issues with other ilegal drugs & alcohole to contend with but if he is truly in severe pain then pain meds should be given but monitored. Vicky is a celebtity chaser & I do NOT believe she loves Jeff, she’s with him to further her suppossed career, I saw it on her website and it made me mad, she is riding his coattails, did you see the way she reacted when Dr. Drew told her she would be on another unit in the rehab and not on the actual show, the tears stopped at once??? Wake up Dr. Drew, she is as phoney as a 3 dollar bill!
I really love Rodney King, he is truly a sweet man and I wish him all the best*
I was addicted to opiates some years ago, I had 4 surgeries for Endometriosis and that disease has taken a huge toll on my abdoninal cavity, all my internal oragans were & are still stuck together, loaded with adhesions & scar tissue to this day so no more operation 4 me. I have tried phsical therepy and biofeedback, yoga…all with NO succsess so I doubt Jeff with fare any better but he can give it a shot, he should however stop the drama, it is very disruptive to the rest of the ppl trying to get well and that is not fair. Anyway agian I wish all of you a good, drug free life and I do love your patience Dr. Drew, may not agree with you 100% on all fronts but you are a good man and a good doctor so to shay!

Jeff November 15, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Very good idea Dee, i mean if that didnt work, cmon now what would? I have a very serious drug problem similar to Jeffs, as far as the opoiods go, but i have not found an underlying cause I just love to get high. well use to love it, i still enjoy it but living tihs life sux man it really does. I cant even live a normal life without my medicine, either 100mg fentanyl patch, at least five bags of dope, or at least 4 methadone. I dont know wat to do wit myself.

KerryD November 15, 2008 at 8:53 pm

This is for Jeff… Hey Jeff I was in your shoes 29 months ago. ( yes I know the exact amt of months ) I took ANY pain drug I could get my hands on. I was up to 20 morphine pills a day ( 60 mgs each ) and THANK THE LORD my appendix ruptured and was rushed in for surgery. Well I was so addicted that it took triple the amt of meds to put me to sleep. The dr knew right then I was an addict. He put me on a drug called SUBOXONE and I am drug free. I was an addict from the time I was 17. Today I am happy, healthy and best part I am totally drug free. I dont even take tylenol… GO to your dr and talk to him about SUBOXONE and he/she will help you out of your black hole. I PROMISE you, you will have your life back..

God Speed to all that are struggling with addiction.

kerri November 16, 2008 at 12:40 am

This is for Amber, In this episode you mentioned that you had to get all dolled up because Mom wants you to look like Pam Anderson. Well here is what Pam looks like with no make up. YIKES!! http://television.aol.com/celebrities/stars-without-makeup?icid=200100397x1212696692x1200824008
I must tell you, that as I watched you lying on the floor detoxing and vomitting, I was bewildered by how you could still look so beautiful during a time that must be the lowest of the low. While you appear to have no make up on, I must wonder if they are putting minimal makeup on for the cameras. You appear to be so naturally beautiful. Tell the tape in your head that tells you to get dolled up to “shup up.” Pam NEEDS make-up, you don’t. I hope while you are in rehab they are able to work on your self-image.

I hope all of you are able to be sucessful through this program. Wishing you all a sober better life.

Sarah November 16, 2008 at 12:54 am

It’d be great if you could do a series on eating disorders treatment. I know the tx model is different, but it sure would be great to raise awareness of these illnesses and the recovery process. It seems that all folks see in the media is the glorification of the disorder through showing the photos of underweight celebrities – again, the focus is on their weight – not the physiological damage, the psychological foundations to the disorders, the hell of coming out of it, or what it takes to try and not be eating disordered in a weight obsessed society. It wouldn’t be as colorful as drug/alcohol rehab patients, given the personality traits are different, but it sure would be groundbreaking to do this on TV.

K November 16, 2008 at 7:36 am

I thought I was going to be the only one wanting to call Jeff out on his attention seeking behavior. From my perspective, he and Vicky are co-dependent and it is not a healthy relationship. They are mutually manipulative and abusive. I don’t believe soberiety will change that.
I fear that Dr. Drew is far too personally invested in Jeff’s recovery – he is certainly more vested than Jeff himself is which allows him (Jeff) to manipulate and act out to gain attention.

Qball November 16, 2008 at 10:56 am

Im sorry but Jeff C is a waste of space. He sure doesnt want help and that is pretty damn clear. He and his nutball of a girl friend need to get the hell on and leave the rest of the people who truly want help ALONE. Jeff is addicted to surgery ( loves the way the needle feels going in with the versed to put him to sleep ) and he loves the way it feels when morphine runs into his veins. He then DOES NOT do Physical Therapy or non of the rehab that comes with surgery. He turns to coke.. Which boggles my mind. When doing ~*`)@*`^((@))!&& back in the 80s) it always made my back stiffen up and I couldnt sit still.. HOW THE F DOES that work for this guy? He is disruptive and needs to hit the road.

Rayne November 16, 2008 at 1:02 pm

I completely agree with Kerri!
Amber, as I watched you go through the detox process I was blown away by your strength and grace. I am a recovering opiate and benzo addict, sober since May 19, 2007. My family and I decided on a controversial amino acid treatment to get me through detox, and eventhough I was sober I went to a traditional rehab 3 months later. My detox treatment was a 10 day IV process that was tailored to me by using detailed blood analysis to determine what would go into each IV bag. Most opiate patients sleep through a majority of the treatment, but I had a harder time than most. I vomited for nine of the ten days, and after the second day I just could not bring myself to eat before the treatment because I knew as soon as I was hooked up to the IV that I would just throw up my breakfast. I know that is the long way to explain that I looked like total hell during the entire process. After the first day of 10 hours on an IV drip, I was so exhausted that I couldn’t hold my head up to wash my face or even brush my teeth. I went to my second day of treatment in the same clothes that I wore on day 1, and I didn’t brush my hair, wash my face, or brush my teeth. Opiate withdrawal is utter hell even with help!! Amber, you are one strong lady for going through it the way you did, and you looked better than I did 6 months after I completed my detox and rehab. Congrats and keep up the hard work!

bostongal November 16, 2008 at 2:30 pm

All we have is right and right now…this moment. I’ve been clean and sober since May 30, 1985 and I’ve seen it all and heard all the excuses. I think Jeff has real physical problems but I also think Dr Drew is enabling him to a certain point. He needs a dose of reality and some tough love instead of the constant prodding and over involvement. Just my two cents however! I truely hope Jeff can get on track but he has to want it and I don’t think he is there yet.
Julie..you are beautiful. Keep on one day at a time. I get the psuedo-self thing. I’ve been there. We needed that help when we couldn’t face it. Our other selves saved us. You are strong and able..good luck and keep up the good work.

Lexi November 16, 2008 at 3:41 pm

What’s wrong with Steven Adler’s mouth?

Christina November 16, 2008 at 5:57 pm

I would like Dr. Drew to explain what happens to the body when you “OD” both on alcohol and opiates. For example, Heath Ledger. What caused his death?

Bobbi November 16, 2008 at 9:11 pm

After watching today’s and the other shows “On Demand”today, I wanted to share this with everyone on this show and others with drinking/drug addictions.

I was a closet drinker on & off since 1980, and on April 2, 2005, I finally admitted to alcohol addiction and stopped that day by following Rational Recovery Program (Addictive Voice Recognition Technique – AVRT). This program teaches you that “The sole cause of your addiction is a voice in your head that tells you to “Do it!” in a thousand different ways. That is your Addictive Voice.” Per their website http://www.rational.org/ below is description of AVRT: “Observe your thoughts and feelings, positive and negative, about drinking or using. Thoughts and feelings which support continued use are called the Addictive Voice (AV); those which support abstinence are you. When you recognize and understand your AV, it becomes not-you, but “it,” an easily-defeated enemy that has been causing you to drink. All it wants is pleasure. “I want a drink,” becomes, “It wants a drink.” Think to yourself, “I will never drink again,” and listen for its reaction. Your negative thoughts and feelings are your AV talking back to you. Now, think, “I will drink/use whenever I please.” Your pleasant feelings are also the AV, which is in control. Recovery is not a process; it is an event. The magic word is “Never,” as in, “I will never drink/use again. ” Recognition defeats short-term desire, and abstinence soon becomes effortless. Complete separation of “you” from “it” leads to complete recovery and hope for a better life. The only time you can drink is now, and the only time you can quit for good is right now. “I will never drink/use again,” becomes, “I never drink now.” It’s not hard; anyone can do it.”

I hope this message is read by everyone in this show/other addicts and pray that is helps and encourages you to learn more about Rational Recovery. God Bless, Bobbi

i am sure the taping is over – but i am curious if jeff ever figured out what it is he needs to be rescued from…….. his desire to call 911 ALL THE TIME is like a metaphor in his life. it indictes to me – somewhere in his life he is searching for rescue. either from drugs – or himself – or something in his past. i am interested to see if that correlation is ever made. i think it is the key to unlocking his additction.

Robbi November 16, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Wow what a show. I kow that Jeff is no doubt in a lot of pain. Who wants to have to live with that. I know it must be very frustrating for Dr. Drew to have to spend so much time going over the same thing again & again with little results.Jeff is looking for the perfect answer that will allow him to continue to use. The back surgery is Jeffs’ answer. What is the answer for Dr. Drew for better or worse Jeff is a part of Dr. Drews’ life. For most of us the answer would be easy. Why bother he cleary doesn’t want help.He is disruptive, abusive and hasn’t begun to get with the program. I can’t imagine what any Dr. goes through with this type of patient.Jeff will die if he doesn’t make a change.Dr Drew knows it everyone knows it.It is hard to fight for some ones life when they could are so little. As for Dr.Drew being manipulated by Jeff. He is a smart man he knows what is going on.I have faith in the recovery process & its’ ability to help millions. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
DR DREW & STAFF!!!

For everyone reading who is addicted to opiates, I would like to recommend that you look into methadone maintainence treatment. It is for addicts who have been down every other avenue and still can’t stop. MMT has changed many lives for the better, including my own. I’ve struggled with opiate addiction for over ten years, and MMT is the only thing that has kept me sober for any amount of time. I’m always amazed when programs like this one don’t mention it.

Dear Dr. Drew, This is the first episode of your program that I’m )(*%&_*!(^#()!* uming works with celebrity
with addictions. Has Jeff had MRI’s and other work up of blood looking for reasons for pain.
I don’t understand the approach if his spine etc. is deteriorated.

I have had an implanted pain pump that has really altered my life. I still require a lot of rest at times
because in addition to spinal degeneration, spinal stenosis, stage !V knee deterioration, I have
Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as other arthralgias and myalgias. I am also diabetic and have
perpherial neuropathy. My life improved wihen I started seeing a pain physician. My blood
inflammation has been greatly reduced by the use of colchecean (SP). This muli approach
to my poor health has made my life much more manageable.

I never smoked at all, drank or used any street drugs so maybe I was a better candidate for
tor the modalities than Jeff, but it breaks my heart for people to not get “controlled help” through
certified pain physicians, rheumatologist and the use of strict accountability with the oral
narcotics I get. These have been greatly reduced due to the pump which is now trickling
delautin (SP) on my spine.

I hope you only accept people that are not a candidate for medical care. I can’t have surgery
for my problems because my physicians consider my health to currently be too fragile.

I know what you mean abiout narcotics causing pain. I have detoxed myself before so I experienced
that process. However, I need the highly trained physicians I see. My meds are very controlled
with strict usuage guidelines. Good luck on your program/

How long does Jeff have to be off drugs to stop hurting. Severe chronic pain is a bad deal.

IdahoHuntress November 17, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I’ve been enjoying the series, (trying to catch up now that hunting season’s over) and would like to share Velatol. For Jeff, my heart goes out to him.
I’ve come across Velatol (www.velatol.com), a very high-grade fish oil from Alaskan waters that helps heal the back and nerves.
Velatol is Pharmaceutical Grade n-3 PUFAs from deep water fish containing pure n-3 PUFAs Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) essential fatty acids.

Each serving of Velatol contains 3 grams of n-3 PUFAs:

* Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) — 1080mg
* Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) — 720mg

The Quality of Velatol manufacturing is regulated under the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), which is promoted by the US Food and Drug Administration. Ensuring that Velatol is safe, consistent, and pure. Velatol is molecularly distilled to remove any possible impurities. Certified free of PCBs, heavy metals, mercury, pesticides, & dioxins.
The fish oil is extracted from one part of the fish only, not the entire body or mixed parts.
It heals back tissues and nerves, supports back function and helps back tissues work better. It also pulls out toxins as well.
It took my hubby 4 months’ worth to not feel the twing in his back when he’d first get out bed. He also has sciatica, two blown discs in the lower back and broke his neck and he still hunts! Velatol has and is healing him and the pain has gone away! Oh yes, he has cut back and discontinued some of his pain meds (salsalate 750, flexerell and hydrocodone the lower dosage).
I know this would heal help heal Jeff’s back, will probably take longer for him, with such back damage. I know that he’d be able to stand up straight in 4 to 6 months and the pain would be easing up.
Velatol has a club the first bottle is $10 and one is automatically sent out monthly at around $54-$55. It’s well worth it, once signed up four newsletters are sent out with more detailed information about the oil.
It’d be well worth the effort for Jeff to try and those that suffer with back pain.

Tammy November 17, 2008 at 5:27 pm

I hope Jeff Conoway gets this message: My heart breaks to see you in such a state, I hate that TV watchers think this type of show is entertainment. All people who battle drug and alcohol abuse need our compassion, not pointing fingers. Jeff I will be praying that you will find the strength again in the Lord to get well again. Don’t give up the fight!! your worth saving. I have always been a fan of yours and I always will. Please fight for life, there r is peace and rest ahead, just keep looking up!!

I really enjoy the show. My heart goes out to all the patients.

Sonia November 17, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I agree that Jeff supporting and protecting Tawny when she disclosed the sexual abuse was great.
I’ve been through rehab and in the beginning I still blamed myself for the horrible abuse I endured by all of the adults in my life. Two years later and I don’t blame myself anymore but having the support and protection of the people in my group really helped me get to this point in my life. They loved me until I could love myself. =)
Dr. Drew is great and I am lucky to have had therapists in my rehab who were in sync with Dr. Drew’s style.
I love to watch the show because I feel for what they are going through and it helps me to remember how far I’ve come. It’s a lot of work but my life now is definitely a life worth living and loving.

TAMMY November 18, 2008 at 2:40 am

AMBER’S MOM – This brought tears to my eyes. Good work Dr. Drew! WOW I am studying counseling and love to watch you work. I also am an AA sponsor and it is so frustrating to work with people like Jeff but you are a master. You are patient, compassionate but firm and steadfast. I am learning a lot watching this show.

angie November 18, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Hang in there guys and gals. I have been in recovery for 5 years. I was heavily addicted to narcotics and used surgeries and chronic pain to continue my addiction. I do not have chronic pain today thanks to being off the meds. I would not have believed my docs had they told me the pain meds were causing my pain. I can say today that I am sure they were. I lost alot due to my illness. I had a great career as a registered nurse which I lost. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to stick with the program. It really does work. You are not special or different from the millions who have stayed clean through this program. It is up to you now to make the decision to trust in something other than yourself! Good Luck to you all. Keep up the great work Dr. Drew.

I must say that Celebrity Rehab is one of the shows I watch faithfully. Dr. Drew is tender yet firm at the same time. He tells you the truth even if you do not want to hear it. All the patients on the show should be very grateful for this chance to deal with life altering issues and start living for today, not for the next pill or drink. Unfortunately, in our society today, masking issues is so common place. I guess we’re not supposed to feel because it hurts too much. It is said what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger….so true. I truly hope all the patients continue with treatment, remain sober and LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST. Everyone deserves that much… : ) Julie, such a pretty name…it means “youthful, soft and soothing”….

I wish I were lucky enough to have Dr. Drew when I was in rehab.

The cast. Gary I think needs more help than rehab. God bless him. But, he’d drive me to drink.
Amber I relate to a lot as I’ve gone thru what she is (although I didn’t look that good lol)
The girl from AI , my heart goes out to her. I hope she makes it. She’s a mess. (no offense) I was at one time as well. Jeff I don’t know. He, I’m afraid isn’t going to “make it”. The guy from guns an roses I just wanna hug back. What a sweet soul. The guy the cops beat up (why were they found not guilty?) he is so likeable. Tawny I do not believe she is being “real”. Rod Stewart’s son, I dont’ know anything about. I guess he doesn’t have enough drama to bring in ratings which is really freaking sad.

The best to all of them.

Been there done it and have kicked some pretty hard (`#$+*+~~__%+!*^ in my life.

I know, it can be done.

I have a friend who got thrown out by a previous friend and roommate for being so gooned out on Hydrocodone and Valium. This guy has rented a room in my house since May08. Today, I had to call 911 to have him admitted because he took 80 Darvacet in 2 days. He’s a functional pill-head, like you hear about functional drunks.
He had his 2nd back surgery this time last year. His back-doctor prescribes him Soma, which does not put him to sleep, 60 Valium/20days, and 90 Norco/10days… How can a doctor do that!
3 wks ago, my friend broke 4 ribs, punctured a lung because he was so pilled-out that he tripped over a boot and fell into his bedside table. It’s always something, every month.
5yrs ago he broke into a pharmacy to get Hydocodone… instead got 3 out 7yrs in prison.
Today, I called 911 snd his PO to evaluate his state after finding him crouched in the corner talking to the 2wk old daughter, that does not exist.
I mean what else can be done?! I saw Jeff tonight and wonder if death isn’t the only real answer for some people… heartless or just honest? I don’t feel safe with this guy in my home now, but on his own, he ends up jobless and living in per-week-motels. And some how I became the witch how says, “get it together” ALL the time!

I cannot believe how much of a looser Jeff C is, addict or not, no wonder he never made it in Hollywood, he’s such a pansy. He & Victotia are purfect for each other, they crave attention and have nothing to offer when they get it except crappy attitudes and self centered-ness

Julie November 20, 2008 at 12:15 am

I am frustrated when I watch Jeff on the show. I have had two back fusions in 3 years. My last fusion was last year at 47 yrs. old. I also have scoliosis. My discs were removed during both surgery. I went water skiing a year after my surgery and have been hiking. You have to be crazy to want to have back surgery! It is so painful! All the drugs in the world wouldn’t make me want to have another surgery.
Dr. Drew would be a Saint if he can help Jeff. I don’t know why he keeps coming on the show because it doesn’t seen like Jeff want’s help. I think Jeff is looking for attention. Gary cracks me up!!!!!!!

being 10 yrs sober after 20 yrs of addiction, i have to say these people arre in a fight for their live-it’s scary and they just have to pray for strength and courage, because it’s the scariest but most important thing they’ll ever do-jeff needs to get down on his knees and pray to higher power for help- amber needs to realize she;s more than a pretty girl and find out what it’s really about-god bless them

The show (celeb rehab) is very inspirational to those of us who suffer from our own addictions! Thankyou!

I don’t understand why this constant attack on Gary Busey! Being an ex drug addict – crazy lunatic person myself! Just jump off his back man. This is just a ” crazy thing ” Gary has going for him that I truly believe he is trying to get that myth gone and the people are not helping at all! except Rodney he truly is a good person.

greg November 20, 2008 at 10:42 pm

would someone tell Gary Busey that he’s got a fan in me; been one since he did “Buddy Holly.
I can tell he’s got a kind heart & that he’s doing good as far as getting healthy again. It may take more than just this stint w/Dr. Drew, but I believe in him. When I see Jeff……..after this show they show reruns of “Taxi”. He had a great career at that point…. What happened!?!?! His girlfriend is a moron & he needs to stop making excuses & acting like a primadonna all the time. Ya want help, deal with it.
If not just leave. I’m a fan of his too but he needs to grow up.

Sharon November 20, 2008 at 10:52 pm

First off, Sean Stewart need to grow up, stop living off of Dad and get a real job. He is very juvenile and
has no clue of the real world.
Jeff Conway needs to stop crying like a little girl, we all have problems and have respect for the one’s around you.
Steve Adler all the respect for you……get better and get back to rockin!!!!!

It would be really informative next season if you could bring in someone with an eating disorder. Hollywood has glamorized to a sickening level severly malnourished celebrities. Any given week just pick up a “Star” or “Us” Mags. It’s frightening how all over the internet you find this disease being encouraged and they are using these pics of scary skinny celebs to fuel the flames.

Steve November 23, 2008 at 11:27 pm

How is a career criminal [Rodney King…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_King considered a “celebrity”? Since when does repeated law breaking raise you to celebrity status?
It is a disservice to the others for him to be included in this group.

Ive been reading all the stuff people wrote really sad but i want you all to know when i was growing up I was raped and beaten by my father from the time i was 10.had nobody to turn to not even my mother, I never turned to drugs or drinking to me thats a cop out you are what you want to be.I have 3 kids married work with the elderly, Ill tell you one thing I got out of my life is that am a strong person and i can handle just about anything, stop feeling sorry for yourself or wanting other people feel sorry for ya.

Karen December 1, 2008 at 11:49 am

Dr.Drew is great. Nikki and jeff look and act like they are on drugs still. i wonder if they are or if the drugs they took before rehab has messed them up permently.

Lisa December 5, 2008 at 3:05 pm

I have a question ?? Why is nikki’s jam still going a hundred miles an hour if she is clean. I understand that there will be some movement, but come on ..
she has to be on something. It looks like it did from the first day when she was still high… And the gum chewing she did still did not cover it up … I say Dr. Drew drug test her and make sure she is clean..

Lisa December 5, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I truely hope ambers mother is going to be ok.. Amber needs to keep her head up and do the sober living as well as her mom.. I hope Amber can find all the work she wants and needs when she is all finished with this. Gpd bless
