David Cook Wants To Hear You Sing!

For the last few weeks we’ve been encouraging fans of David Cook to send us video clips of themselves singing the American Idol winner’s new “Light On.” It’s been working out well, as you can see from the submissions.

Well, David recently himself swung by to see how things were going. In the piece above, he’d tells the world that he’d love for his audience to generate few more additions - c’mon, take a chance. We’re ending the deal on December 2, so if you’re going to make a fun clip, do it now. Find out about the “Light On” challenge right here.

Also, after the jump you can watch David perusing some of the already submitted performances. Check out what he has to say.

Having no musical talents whatsoever, aside from listening, I won’t be entering the LO challenge. Just wanted to say how great I think this is. Loved your comments about the entries too. David, how do you always manage to exceed our expectations?

  • Susan Says:

In all due respect…….MICHAEL JOHNS should have been the winner. Ameircan Idol REMOVED him when he wasn’t even in the bottom 3 - it’s the truth.

  • Kristen Says:

Susan - While I agree that MJ did not last as long as he should have on American Idol and I was saddened to see him go (although ultimately he will be fine - he’s already working on an album)…. what does your comment have to do with the “Light On” challenge….?

Thank you, David, for always thinking of your fans and keeping us involved in your crazy world.

Great job to everyone who has entered!
There is a lot of talent out there….

  • mandy Says:

    Really Dave?
    wow.

I wonder if you heard Ain’s video….it was incredible.

  • mainedcfan Says:

David, it’s so cool that you offered this challenge…I thought it was funny when you told Alison Becker(?) on VH1 that you thought your job might be in jeopardy as a result - don’t think there’s ANY chance of that! My fav (after yours of course) would be DJADRUMS version. If you haven’t watched it yet, I hope you check it out….I thought he was quite talented and could make it in the business himself (playing his OWN music; however…..) Thanks for continually surprising us and warming our hearts (now I’m off to go watch your Rockefeller Ctr. performance on NBC! Enjoy your holidays!!

  • Lynn - Big Sis Lynn Says:

Generous and fair with all..can’t wait to see what you think of the Asian girl…she CAN sing. I did think Ryan’s version was kinda cool but vocals leave a lot to be desired. Love the idea of a challenge…can’t sing well…so I’m out. How ’bout a lyric challenge? Design? LOL

  • Glynda Bennett Says:

Some talented and (obviously) untalented people entered this joke of a contest, but like the contestants on American Idol, the majority put their time and hearts into it. For what?

I never thought I’d see the day that David Cook would be cruel, simply because he got his back up when some of us criticized the storyline of his ‘Light On’ video. Everybody and their mother praised his (and his band’s) performance, because it was incredible beyond belief. BUT THE STORY IS JUST A CARBON COPY OF DAVID ARCHULETA’S ‘CRUSH’ VIDEO, only his makes sense!!!

I’m sorry, David. I’ve never been a bigger fan of anyone in my life as I am of you, but today I’m disappointed.

With more love than I can say,
    glynda bennett

    every MESSAGE he SENDS, SINGS,
SAYS, SIGNS, SHOWS & KNOWS & EVEN the 1s he Doesn’t!! Cross
Word Puzzles R’nt 4 the Faint of
Heart!! ALL MY LOVE Mr. DC..ALL!

  • nhcookiefan Says:

    Ms. Bennett -
Did I miss something? I don’t remember David being cruel - he had positive things to say to everyone.
And why do you think he got his “back up” over some criticism for his video? I’ve never seen/heard any response from him re: any criticism - it wasn’t HIS idea for the storyline - it was the director’s idea. Your remarks make me suspect that you are not actually DC’s fan but DA’s - and for the life of me I cannot understand why fans keep making ANY kind of comparisons! They’re two different artists heading in different directions musically. I personally love Archie’s voice, but his music to me is too young for my taste - I prefer the more adult DC’s - but BOTH are multi-talented artists!

  • Glynda Bennett Says:

    dear nhcookiefan,

I appreciate your response to my comment, and I guess I didn’t make myself clear. I dearly love David Cook, for the wonderful person he is, and for his phenomenal talent. He reminds me of my 27 year old son, which makes him even dearer to me. I just feel that it was wrong of him to tell those people how great they were, when they really weren’t, and then to ignore the truly talented people. Maybe I missed something. Wasn’t this supposed to be a contest?

I am a fan of David Archuleta, but I was not comparing the two at all. First of all, David Cook’s song, ‘Light On’, has NOTHING in common with a story about two young kids “finding each other” in a diner. If you or anyone can or care to explain this video to me, I’m willing to listen. I love every second of David and his band’s part, but the storyline eludes me. Second, have you seen the ‘Crush’ video? A young boy (played by David A.) has a “crush” on a girl, and even though she’s with some brute in the beginning, he (David A.) wins her in the end. It makes perfect sense. ‘Light On’ video, same story: A young boy in a diner has a crush on a girl, who leaves said diner with a brute, but ends up with the young boy. It makes NO sense, because it doesn’t pertain to the song.

I don’t know who came up with the storyline, but it was a bad idea to copy someone else’s - ANYONE ELSE’S, especially when it had nothing whatsoever to do with the song. But (I think) the “challenge” was a direct result of people’s negativity about the video, even though they (including myself) were only trying to give David constructive criticism. Are we only on this journey with him as long as we agree with everything he does?

Lastly, I apologize for saying that David was cruel. I CAN”T believe that that was his intention, anymore than I could ever believe that my son would be cruel on purpose.

  • Nancy Whelan Says:

    Come on, David!
Please look at the submission by Ain of Malaysia. And while you are at it, look at her versions of The Truth, Andy’s Reasons, and her September version of Light On (all on YouTube as verbally dyslexic).

Ain has been a loyal and active Word Nerd, and her version is excellent. There are hundreds of us who think it is the best. Please be sure you look at it before you make a decision.

  • gonesback Says:

I wonder if you saw the video by jackie and jessica. The did what someone called “David Cooksized” your song. They took your song and put a totally different twist to it. They also did this with just a hand held video camera and windows media player to edit. They recorded the music in their bedroom and Riley was so cute….. I know everyone has a story behind their videos and my hats off to all who entered.

  • Laura Says:

You’re on top of marketing yourself, and that’s great. Why leave it up to the media people.

However, re the album I have to say: too much SCREAMING! I voted for you all the way on American Idol. You Can Sing it.

On Idol I did like it when you’d bust through really punching moments. Sexy Mariah Carrie song, but it did need something to make it more yours. The point is, it needs to be sung and not screeched…or I/we can’t listen very long. You can do it! I send you support and confidence in your abilities. Don’t try so hard to be good. It’s in you. I just know it.

Thanks if you actually read this and consider it.

I really wish you the very best & great success,

    Laura

  • Tom Says:

I searched for a while to find a stream video of David Cook’s “light on” video here at work due to surf control. Anyways I was reading comments and deicided to go visit the other David’s page and listen to his “crush” song. There is no comparison David Cook’s debut song is a hell of a lot better. You would have to be almost @@^%$@`~^(_%)#%(+& ed to think otherwise. I know everyone has different tastes but the light on song actually made me feel something. While as the David A’s song was just another of same sounding song as many others with no real emotions. David Cook’s song reminded me of the military over seas and I think that would have been a perfect choice for a video. Maybe of a soldier who had died but his soul is restless and he tries to go back home to his wife and kids. I’m actually a soldier and that thought along with the lyrics of the song brings a lot of emotions. I think it would make more people understand not only the physical sacrifice a soldier must make but the emotional sacrifice also.
