“I never understood why people took movies so seriously. You’re going to see a film about a man with a bat on his chest and you’re taking it seriously…a man made of iron and you’re taking it seriously. It’s fundamentally ridiculous, yet everyone’s interested in it. So why not talk about in a way that’s fun. ”
That’s Mark Ramsey talking about how he came up with the vibe for his moviejuice Web site. Take a look: he likes to mess with the thing he loves most – movies – and he leads with his humorous side. Tonight, he going send a stream of Twitter missives from the Critics Choice Awards show in L.A. VH1 airs the event and its red carpet pre-show live, at 8:30 pm. ET.
Ramsey chose the satire route because “it’s more fun that way. Movie juice posts are “less of a review of a movie you either haven’t seen, won’t see or did see, and more of a theme park ride through a movie, a chance to have some thrills,” says Ramsey. “And c’mon, it’s more fun to enjoy a theme part ride than it is to read a film synopsis. Even The Onion, when they cut to a movie review, gets dead serious. Why? You can have a awful lot of fun with teasing a movie.”
We decided to ask Ramsey some quick questions about his favorite subject:
Nicole Kidman recently said that she very well may pull out of the business, like Joaquin Phoenix did.
Joaquin pulled out? How can that be true, it’s only been a year or something. He’s not gone. Gene Hackman has pulled out, and I’m pretty sure Anne Bancroft is out. But anyone who’s followed Nicole’s career knows that she’ll be out of it when the cows come home. And no one’s ever seen a cow in Santa Monica.
What’s the primary job of a pundit?
The primary purpose Is to revel in one’s own punditry, with no regarding whatsoever to the artists, readers, or viewers affected by your punditry. What…you seem to think it has something to do with the audience.
Why didn’t Revolution Road make it to the nominees list this year?
Because it was boring as hell. It made me wish that Kate had never gone back to Titantic.
Which is the better comic book film, Spider Man or Iron Man?
Spiderman – no ifs, ands, or buts. Sam Raimi rules, today, tomorrow and always.
I name some some actors and you say the first thing that comes to mind. Deborah Messing.
Who?
Meryl Streep
Ahhh…Streepiness
Gene Hackman
He’d better be alive. Popeye Doyle better be alive. I know he’s retired. But I hear him on the commercial for…not the Home Depot, the other place. There was a time when you could not have a screen credit roll without Gene Hackman in the list. I hope he comes back soon.
Bruce Willis
I heard a story about him the other day. When Bruce goes to do his dubbing, he evidently waits in his car outside the place for an hour or so, to make the point to those inside just who’s in charge.
Check Mark Ramsey’s Twitter feeds from the CCA show tonight, starting at 9 pm ET. As he says on his site, “I’ll be the guy apologizing to Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Beckinsale for confusing each one for the other.”
