Celebrate Black History, Send Us Photos!

It’s an auspicious week in America. Yesterday we celebrated Martin Luther King Day and today is Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration. At VH1 we’re acknowledging the occasion by celebrating 2009′s Black History Month in the most inclusive way we know. Check the video above. We’ve gathered several images of African American life, both historical and contemporary, and made a montage of black contributions, both large and small. Only one thing’s missing: you.

As we tilt toward February, we’d like you to contribute to our parade of photos. Our clip is only 30 seconds right now. We’d love for it to be 30 minutes. Submit pictures that you think represent the essence of Black History Month, and make it personal. Consider it an answer to a simple question: what does the future of black history look like? Friends, family, artists, politics…we’ll show your submission to the world, and we’ll consider it for use in our ever-growing montage. You may very well see it on VH1 during February – we’ll be updating the montage as the month progresses. Make it meaningful. Widen the circle.

UPDATE: OUR VIDEO IS MUCH LONGER AND MUCH RICHER BECAUSE YOU ALL SENT IN PHOTOS. WE’LL KEEP ADDING TO IT THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.

Join our community! Upload your photos and meet the people profiled on VH1 for Black History Month.

Download a Nas track and help support African health care initiatives.

Celebrating our Black History enables us to express ourselves, to share our stories and to embrace our unique and individual differences. Black is beautiful!

I would realy like to submit photos of my 4 month old son and his father.. My son Jason Roger Mosley Jr was born on oct,24,08 his fsther Jason sr. was murdered april 27,2008 I was three months pregnate and we couldnt wait for our child to be born .. Jason sr. was a great black man who was doing everything in his power to be diffrent and not be in the catagory of a young black thug..he was supporting my pregnacy to the fullest working to jobs and planning our wedding. Jason was murdered a day before our wedding. He was my black history in showing me that all young black man aren’t here to mistreat, pimp,or beat women,as well as not being a fathers to their children.. Jason sr was another black brother who beat the average statistic of black men period.. GOD HAS BLESSED ME WITH A PEICE OF HIM OUR SON JASON JR.

How do I see Black History? It is simple- I see it as history that BELONGS TO ALL OF US. Yes, it is the history of a beautiful group of people in our coutry, but at the end all history is human history’ history of THESE UNITED STATES!!! Black History belongs to us all, as we are all in this wonderful country. History does not belong to any one race/ethnicity….as soon as we see that ALL HISTORY is HUMAN HISTORY, then relegating “history” to one ethnicity will be over with. The truth is when we build barriers like that….it is what keeps us APART. Look, we will all belong to the HUMAN RACE, and that is where we all belong. We are all human, we are all one, same DNA, same RNA, we are all simply inidivuals in the HUMAN RACE. And I find us coming together as humans….beutiful!!!

So I have to ask. If I find black heritage in my family tree I should be proud and sing to the heavens but if my tree is all white I shall never sing. No matter what diversities my ancestors faced. Shall they never be allowed to sing no matter they were oppressed or not because of the color of their skin as it will offend those that were colored and oppressed. Thank you to all who look past the color barrier as all colors have seen diversity. To the yellow, black and white…GOD BLESS
