The Celebreality Interview - Kelsey

Before Kelsey, Rock of Love had never seen a human hump push-up, a tantrum on a speed bump or a girl laugh in Bret’s face as she was being eliminated. And that was just last episode! Below, the 22-year-old talks about her romantic apathy for Bret, the dubious notion of friends on reality TV and why she wishes she had gotten trashed a lot sooner.

How was your time on the show?

It was long.

What drove you to appear on the show? Were you attracted to Bret?

No. I got an email on MySpace from a casting director. I was never into Bret.

Yeah, I kind of figured when you were on the speed bump and you said, “I don’t give a f*** about Bret.”

Yeah. I think all the girls and everyone around me knew I didn’t like him. He’s more than double my age. He’s 45 and I’m 22. I never knew his music or anything and there was just no attraction there.

You didn’t get a lot of one-on-one time with him, but what if you had? How would you have dealt with that and your lack of interest?

I don’t think I would have lasted as long on the show. When we went on that date [on this week's episode], he knew something wasn’t there and I did, too. It was kind of obvious. I think not going on a date for so long is what kept me there.

At the same time, you did bond with some of the girls, namely Farrah and Ashley.

I got along with them really well. Our personalities fit. I think that helped me, but I didn’t have too many problems with any of the girls till the end. I never really liked Taya’s personality, but I got along with everyone else.

It was kind of surprising that you got along so well with Farrah and Ashley, though. You seem a lot gentler in nature.

That’s a misconception. My personality is a lot like theirs; they’re just louder. They got more attention because of that. I didn’t voice my opinion as much, but we had the same views. They were my entertainment. Bret really wasn’t around that much, so we had to find our own entertainment. Without them, I would have been so bored. The other girls were kind of boring.

Speaking of not being bored, this week’s episode was classic thanks in part to your drunken display with Farrah at the concert. How do you look back on that? Are you embarrassed?

No, I don’t get embarrassed easily at all. I think I’m the only person in Utah that doesn’t. I was laughing harder than anyone else at that episode.

What about the drunk cry on top of a speed bump that followed. Was that a low point in your young life?

Me and Farrah had drunk a whole bottle throughout the day and it just came down to me having no desire to be there. I asked the producers to let me leave a few times, but they told me that since I was under contract, I had to stay. At that point, I was just trying to do anything to leave. I was there, like, 26 days and by the end, I wanted to kill myself. I knew that if I went out of control, they’d send me home. I don’t regret doing it. I just broke down, like, “Fine, if you’re not going to send me home, I’ll send myself home.” That’s why I started trying to run away.

But then Big John gave you a pep talk.

He was so funny. He was my favorite there. We talked a lot. I think he really cared about me because he said stuff like, “You need to stay. I want you here. Even if you don’t like Bret, you need to be here.” I felt like he was my dad for a second.

It was pretty amazing when you laughed in Bret’s face while he was eliminating you.

I was ready to get on a plane and go home, but they talked me into staying for elimination. I was still so drunk. I knew what Bret was going to do, and he was just being all serious, taking everything to heart and I was just laughing, like: “You are such a tool.” I think I was really too drunk to comprehend what was going on. All I could think was, “He’s so lame.” I told him that he was lame, and I told the other girls that, too, but they don’t show any of that on TV.

Who was the lamest?

Brittanya was really fake. She had no personality and people kept telling her, “You’re not even saying anything. You’re gonna go home.” By the end, she was like, “I’m just gonna hit someone. I don’t even care. I want to go out with a bang.” During the last episodes I was in, she was just trying to start fights with people so that way if she got eliminated, people would think she was a badass. And then, Taya with her whole Penthouse thing. She was so dumb.

Besides Farrah and Ashley, how was it dealing with the girls in general?

I don’t like girls too much. They’re rude and catty and stuff. So being thrown with 20 of them who are there for one reason – to make you go home – is hard. Even the girls who are your friends, they’re not really your friends. I guarantee if I stayed longer and it had come down to me, Farrah and Ashley, they would have turned on me to make me go home. You can’t take your friendships there too seriously.

Do you still talk to anyone from the show?

I talk to Farrah a little and Ashley through MySpace. I used to talk to Marcia until the episode when Maria went home and I said, “Why can’t that happen to Marcia? No one wants her here.” Marcia sent me a text that was like, “You bitch! If I ever see you again…” Freaking out at me, going off. So I don’t really talk to her anymore.

What is it like living in Utah while this show is airing?

It’s such a conservative state. I was flipping threw the local newspaper with my mom and grandmother and there was a headline about me: Utah’s Number 1 Party Girl. I saw another article that was talking about girls on reality TV representing Utah: there was someone on The Bachelor and The Real World. It said, “We tend to forget about the girl who’s trying to find love on Rock of Love. She’s not representing Utah very well. In this episode, she gets drunk.”

Is your family religious?

Not really. Extended family, but my immediate family isn’t. My mom is my No. 1 fan. I’d watch the show with my parents, and we’d all crack up. The one time I made out with Bret, my mom was like, “Ew, that’s so gross.”

Did you say the same thing?

Yeah. He really isn’t a good kisser. He’d slobber a lot.

What’s your opinion on Bret outside of your romantic apathy?

I think he’s a nice guy. I don’t think his intentions on the show were really to find love. I think it was just to hook up with a lot of the girls. I just felt like when he hit on me, I was like, “Ew. You’re gross.” Maybe it’s just because I’m a lot younger than the other girls. Most of them are in their 30’s, so maybe they found him hitting on them cool. Maybe they’re attracted to him.

But besides reading about yourself, you haven’t faced any negative feedback? No anti-gay slurs from your fellow Utahns for basically making out with Farrah?

I don’t know if it’s just Utah, but I haven’t even gotten recognized a lot. A couple of people have said, “You look like the girl on Rock of Love,” but besides that, no. I haven’t gotten any negative feedback even on my MySpace. I thought I’d get a lot more negative feedback, but everyone’s been really positive. A lot of people think that Utah is just a Mormon state, but it’s really just the older generation that’s so conservative. People my age are fun and outgoing. My friends are the reason I went on this show in the first place. They’ve always said, “You’re fun. You should have your own TV show. You should do this. It would be funny.”

Looking back, was it? Are you happy that you did the show?

Yeah. The only regret I have is that I tried being more reserved and quiet in the beginning. I didn’t want to stand out or get attacked. I wish I had been myself through the whole show and been more like I was on the last episode.

Kelsey was hilarious! Here’s a little secret for all of you guys who take these shows way too seriously…. she wasn’t there for Bret, none of the other girls are there for Bret - the only person there for Bret is himself. They’re all getting exposure. It’s too funny when people call these girls fake - this entire SHOW is fake. It’s all entertainment, and I love it. I wish they would have shown the entire scene when she was sent home. THAT would have been great.

I have to agree with Jennifer. The whole show is about Bret being about Bret. He’s pathetic, but the show is entertaining. He’s totally into himself and he’s nothing but a lech.

  • Hallie Says:
