Green Day freaks have been waiting a while for the superstar punk trio’s follow-up to their monumental American Idiot. But the wildly anticipated 21st Century Breakdown is on its way (due May 15) and to whet appetites, the disc’s first video is being premiered on VH1 Friday, April 24 at 8 pm ET. Director Matthew Cullen says that “Know Your Enemy” is going to visually overwhelming. It was shot in downtown Los Angeles, and features the band in performance.
“There’s a lot of symbolism that I tried to mirror [in the shoot],” Cullen told MTV news. “I took a lot of influence from Green Day’s lyrics and the imagery of [street artist] Banksy. It may not sound like a lot, but it’s huge visually. It’s gonna be a new experience for a lot of their fans. I mean, it’s still Green Day, but it’s just bigger.”
21st Century Breakdown tells the story of of a young couple, Christian and Gloria, as they negotiate “the mess and promise of the century so far,” according to the band’s record label. The tale features three acts: “Heroes and Cons,” “Charlatans and Saints,” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.”
Songs include “21 Guns,” “East Jesus Nowhere,” “Before the Lobotomy,” and “Restless Heart Syndrome.” Rolling Stone has said the disc is “a record of die-hard punk ideals…tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement,” and that the music is a “rock opera in which the rock always comes first.” Butch Vig, famed Nirvana producer, was at the helm of the new album.
Green Day has been testing the new material in clubs and theaters around their stomping grounds of the San Francisco Bay area for the last few days.
