Rolling Stone Compiles Their “100 Greatest Artists” List

Sorry, Michael! The doggone #1 spot is mine!

Following last May’s update to their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” Rolling Stone will be issuing an update to the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” originally published in two parts in separate issues of the magazine in 2004 and 2005.

The editor of the “commemorative issue,” Alan Light, appeared on the Today Show this morning to “reveal” that rankings 5 through 1 remained unchanged: Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles, in order. Light also confirmed that Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, and Aerosmith will remain on the list.

Rolling Stone‘s website still reflects the earlier list, but the updated introduction reveals that Jay-Z has made the updated list. (His writeup is courtesy Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, in keeping with the original list’s mandate that other artists write the tributes.)

If the updates follow the pattern of the songs update, pop and rap will be better-represented and higher ranked. (Michael Jackson languishing at #35? What were they thinking in 2004?) Hopefully, the update will bring the list more closely into step with VH1’s own poll, conducted last year.

Who deserves an upgrade? Who deserves to be bounced off the list? Let us know in the comments!
