Post-Priest, Paul Bettany Is “Done” Playing Religious Renegades On Film

|

We’re only a few days into the run of Big Morning Buzz Live, VH1′s brand new morning show, but what a couple of days it’s been! Just yesterday, renowned star of stage and screen, Paul Bettany, stopped by our offices here in Times Square for an on-air interview with our effervescent host, Carrie Keagan, but he was also gracious enough to stop by our cubicle —surely, not the most glamorous place he’s ever been interviewed, but a very homey one, nonetheless!— for a brief chat.

We peppered the incredibly good-natured Paul with a few questions about why he so often appears on the big screen, as he is in this weekend’s Priest, in roles he describes as “religious renegades” (see also: The DaVinci Code, Legion). He told us, with a smile, that his “subconscious” leads him to these roles, but also that “he’s done” playing these roles, mainly because it’s all he ever gets asked by people like us.

We also tried to egg him on to engage in a bit of friendly trash-talking about his chief competitor at the box office this weekend, Bridesmaids, but instead, he made a funny case about why you should go see Priest (“it’s bloated with action and special effects”). What made Bettany so refreshing of an interview, though, was his closing quip to us: “If you want to go and see Bridesmaids, go and see Bridesmaids. If you want to come and see Priest, come and see Priest. You know, what do I really care? I got paid.”
