With Lonely Island featured player Justin Timberlake hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live, it’s no surprise that he and Andy Samberg reprised their roles as the “D**k in a Box” duo (the pair who may as well be called “Color Me Really Really Bad, Like, Awful”). But their riff on the “Same Girl” gets a Shyamalanian twist: the “girl” is played by none other than musical guest Lady Gaga, and she suggests the titular “3-way”:
The “golden rule” in question, “It’s not gay when it’s in a 3-way,” is obviously being mocked, though the song is a bit more ambiguous than, say, Lonely Island’s “No Homo,” which mocks the insecurity of such disclaimers (see also “pause”) by escalating the usage until, by song’s end, the protagonist has come out as gay. Even still, “Born This Way” fans needn’t worry that Gaga is off-message here.
The real revelation of the episode is that Gaga has a sense of humor (something that, especially after the debacle with Weird Al, was under suspicion). In the game show sketch “What’s That Name,” she gently pokes fun at her own intense devotion to her “monsters.”
And, even after going deep into the character with which we are all so very familiar (for a “Born This Way” performance featuring mock amniotic fluid) she emerged for the goodbye as an unreconstructed human: a 25-year-old woman, excited to have been on the show, chatting up Jimmy Fallon (still in costume from “talking it up on The Barry Gibb Talk Show“):
