Taylor Swift may have just released a music video two weeks ago on CMT, but while country radio has taken to “Mean,” it’s “The Story of Us” that’s been picking up steam on pop radio. So here we are, with “The Story of Us,” which literally just premiered on MTV. In fact, if you’re reading this in the first half hour it’s been posted, turn on MTV right now to see Sway interview Taylor Swift live on air and ask fan questions that have been submitted since Friday through MTV.com or via Twitter (using @MTVNews and the hashtag #AskTaylor).
But if you missed the special, you can still watch the new video, above. It’s more in the schooltime vein of “You Belong with Me”, though Swift has graduated (geddit?) to some sort of Gothic collegiate campus, though she’s still having boy trouble. Look how sweet she is:
How could anyone cause her this kind of pain?
The song’s key line is “You held your pride like you should’ve held me.” After all, as she told Brian Mansfield at USA Today, “‘The Story of Us’ is about running into someone I had been in a relationship with at an awards show, and we were seated a few seats away from each other. I just wanted to say to him, ‘Is this killing you? Because it’s killing me.’ But I didn’t.” And there’s no way to determine who this beau could have been, or whether his name rhymed with Ron Layer. But again, we’re talking about his pride, right? Taylor is the sweet one:
The best gag of the video, though, is that all the other students at this storied institution are apparently busy trying to do their coursework, which just so happens to entail reading the book The Story of Us. No wonder they toss their papers in the air in frustration at the end.
We make no apologies for our fandom of passive-aggressive Speak Now Taylor, but if you disagree, at least she is self-aware enough to throw you a bone!
Plus the song is poppy as heck—a brash, proud, I’m-not-going-to-compromise-if-you-won’t tell-off that doubts itself but doesn’t change course. This has a solid chance of burning up the VH1 Top 20 Countdown when it premieres on the show this Saturday morning at 9am ET/PT.
