Is Katy Perry Bigger Than Lady Gaga? According To The 2011 VMA Nominations, The Answer Is Yes

|

Despite selling more than a million copies during its first week of release, Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way is being whispered about in many industry circles as both a creative and commercial disappointment. Some have even bandied around the theory that the record is suffering because the videos for the Born This Way singles thus far (“Born This Way,” “Judas” and “The Edge Of Glory”) haven’t scaled the same heights as her previous videos, like 2010′s Video Music Award winner for Video Of The year “Bad Romance.” And if the nominations for the 2011 VMAs are any indication, this theory may not be far off.

Four other artists (Katy Perry, Adele, Kanye West, and Bruno Mars) racked up more VMA nominations this year than the Mother Monster. Katy led the way with nine total nominations (including Video Of The Year and Best Female Video), followed by Adele with seven, Kanye with six and Bruno with four.

Gaga, too, must be feeling the pressure; how else to explain the recent media blitz of the last few days? As the summer progresses, no doubt more theories will emerge as to why Gaga didn’t (an idea that our own Nick Minichino touched on recently in his essay, “Ten Years Of The Strokes And The White Stripes, And The Question Of What’s Next”). But for now, we’ll leave the Gaga analysis alone, and instead share with you the complete list of nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, which will air live on Sunday, August 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

“…Born This Way is being whispered about in many industry circles as both a creative and commercial disappointment.” Um, well the last time I checked Metacritic Born This Way was sill hovering at 71 out of 100 points. Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream is what 56 out of 100, I believe. It is all subjective though.
You either do market research to create something or you go with your heart to create. Market research will most likely give you middle of the road pablum that everyone can go along with because it’s easy and expected. Your heart will often screw you over, but oftentimes great stuff happens when you follow it. Born This Way is mostly pretty great.
This is the VMAS though, so who really cares. Not Gaga with her five Grammy wins, five Emmy nominations, CDFA icon award, 3 Brits, numerous other accolades, and of course the 20-24 million albums sold worldwide. All since 2008. Yawn. What a creative disappointment she is. People are allowed to grow. I know it’s scary, but she is trying to hold your hand through the process.
    TL; DR

None of this will matter when Adam’s 2nd album is released.

  4. Xenobia4 says:

I’m sorry, but I think Eminem should have had WAY more. Heh heh, and this post isn’t even about him.

Anyway. Gaga’s definitely higher up, but for many different reasons.

  5. Nick says:

Katy is waaaay better than lady gaga. Katy makes hits while lady gagas songs are garbage. KATYCATS FOREVER! You deserve all your nominations Katy!!

  6. SARAH says:

GAGA FOREVER!!!!! BORN THIS WAY RECEIVED 71 OUT OF 100 FROM METACRITICS (COMBINED), WHILE TEENAGE DREAM RECEIEVED 56….AND BORN THIS WAY WON GRAMMYS OVER TEENAGE DREAM (EVEN THOUGH I LIKE PERRY)

VMA Nominees This Year Could’ve Been Better. It Just Proves That MTV Seems To Be Caring Less About Videos.Just Cause Katy Perry Has The Most Nominees Dosen’t Mean She’ll Win “Them All” She Should Win Though Cause She’s Been Shafted In The Past By Cheap Britney Spears and Tokio Hotel Videos.Who’s Tokio Hotel Again?BLAH!!!! Anyway As Far As Video of The Year Goes,Katy Perry Might Win But I Wouldn’t Hold My Breath on That,Bruno Mars Great Video But Not Gonna Win(Probably Will Win Male Video at The Least),Tyler The Creator I Don’t See It Winning,Just Cause You Got The Balls To Eat a Cockroach Dosen’t mean A Whole Lot.Beastie Boys Probably Should Win But Again I Wouldn’t Hold My Breath.Say What You Will My Pick Is Adele,But I Wouldn’t Hold My Breath on Her Either.

  8. Saurab says:

Katy just got big this year and has never even won any major awards, GaGahas won five grammy’s and her songs have a deep meaning. Katy needs her time to shine and if GaGa was nominated again, Katy would have probably lost again to her because GaGa touches base with her fans more deeply. I have both their albums and love each one, critically, BTW, is doing better than Teenage Dream, but it’s all on personal preference and taste. Her songs are for the radio, both their songs actually, just again, personal preference. Remember, Katy is a a huge GaGa fan as is Gaga of Katy. No one’s bigger, remember, Cher and Madonna have new albums coming out next year. lol you neverknow what happens in time.

  9. marcum garrett says:

LADY GAGA DOESN’T NEED 13 NOMINATIONS AGAIN TO BE THE TALK OF THE SHOW. JUDGING BY PAST PERFORMANCES GAGA WILL STEAL THE SHOW NO MATTER WAT IS GOING ON. AS THE PAST SHOWS GAGA DOEN’T NEED TO WIN AWARDS TO BE THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE SHOW. KATY MAY BE NOMINATED MOST BUT GAGA’S PERFORMANCE WILL MOST LIKELY BE THE MOST TALKED ABOUT PART OF THE 2011 VMA AWARDS. NO MATTER WHERE SHE GOES GAGA IS ALWAYS THE MAIN FOCUS.

On another note Cher and Madonna are releasing new records next year so maybe the next VMA awards we will see Madonna vs Lady Gaga in the nominations!!!
