R.I.P. Jani Lane (1964-2011)

|

We’ve got terrible news to pass along to you this morning. TMZ is reporting that Jani Lane, ex-frontman of the glam metal band Warrant, was found dead in a Los Angeles area hotel last night at the age of 47. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Lane, along with his band, rose to fame in the late eighties when the glam (some would say “hair”) metal scene of the Sunset Strip exploded in popularity. Warrant’s debut album, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, was released by Columbia Records and was somewhat of an unexpected hit. The LP, powered by the smash power ballad “Heaven” (video below), cracked the Billboard Top Ten and positioned the band for even bigger things with the release of 1990′s Cherry Pie. The title track of that record, thanks in large part to its innuendo-laden lyrics, is remembered as one of the raunchier songs and videos of the era, and launched star (and future wife of Lane’s) Bobbi Brown into pin-up status.

By most accounts, the last few years have been difficult for Lane. After struggling with alcohol issues, he appeared on VH1′s Celebrity Fit Club 2 in 2005 and seemed to get his life back on track. However, he fell back into old habits and served nearly four months in jail in 2010 after receiving his second DUI. His body was found in a hotel room of the Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills, California last night.

What a tragic lose to the music industry. Jani Lane will be truly missed. All of these idiots out here that want to trash his memory can stick it where the sun dont shine. Just because people have a drug or alcohol problem does not mean that people can bash them and put them down, it is an illness that some people cannot overcome, and I think it is so childish for people to down jani’s memory. I had a pleasure of hanging out with him a few times after shows he was very down to earth and was nice with my brother and I. My fondest memory is when I was at a show and when I was being picked up my daughter whom was about 9 at the time was there and she was too young to get in the club to meet the other members of warrant. When His girlfriend at the time went onto the bus and told him there was a little girl out here that has bad heart problems, he told her to bring my daughter on the bus so she could meet him and hang out for about an hour. That is the kind of person that Jani was . Jani, RIP you were a blessed soul we all loved you and will never forget all of the talent that you gave us over the years. Go on my friend and rest in heaven with your mother. You don’t have to feel any pain anymore from any of your illnesses or misfortunes, your demons cannot chase you anymore. God Bless you.

  23. LANCE says:

This is more terrible news for the music world, and all of the Rock music fans around the world. Jani Lane was a gifted singer, and he made a lot of people happy with his music. But like all of us, he had his demons in life to contend with. I for one, am sorry that he could not win his battle with drugs. And yes, alcohol is a drug, just like all the others out there. Please don’t let drugs take your life away at a young age. And if your family members or friends have a problem, please try to help them. Death is not a friend any of us should be in a hurry to get aquanted with. I will miss Mr. Jani Lane…

  24. Star says:

Jani Lane….I just like SAYING his name…although today everytime I said it brought tears to my eyes. This is a tragic loss. He wsa one of the best songwriters and vocalists of all time, he was SO extremely talented and unfortunately not appreciated nearly enough…and that’s part of the tragedy. His songs are TIMELESS and I think anyone with good taste and an open mind would agree. He was just REALLY something SPECIAL. As a man, as a musician, as a friend. I’ll love him and miss him forever. It was truely a blessing to have known him. R.I.P. Jani! XOXO

  46. Rocky says:

    R.I.P ~ Jani

  47. W. Don Bennett says:

I will miss Jani. I met him in person and shook his hand when Warrant was playing small venues, He gave it his all and was gracious even though he was having personal problems. I also saw him play in his glory years when Warrant was at their peak. Saw Warrant a few years back with a different lead singer and even though the band itself didn’t play bad the singer was awfull. I guess it is one of those cases like Van Halen where nothing can be as good as the Original.R.I.P. You and Brad Delp will always live in my heart as musicians who contributed greatly. My sympathies to his family. Harold you Suck and are obviously jealous of the Notariaty he brought to Warrant.

  48. Nancy Bozentka says:

It is so sad to see someone so talented and so young to be fighting demons and and lose the fight. My heart goes out to his children and family.

  49. Paul says:

Jani was a great guy. I got a chance to meet him after a show in Milwaukee on the Ultraphobic tour, and he literally gave the lead guitar player in my band the shirt off his back. He took time to hang out with us and was really a down to earth guy. I remember asking him why they didn’t play Inside Out from the Dog Eat Dog album, and he said they’d play the song for me the next night at their show in Chicago. That’s the kind of guy he was. Pretty cool in my book. Unfortunately I never made it to the Chicago show. It’s so sad to hear of his passing and he will be missed. We are keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers.

  58. David Rice says:

the reason our rock stars are dying off at such a young age, is due to the fact they can’t hold their alcohol. I have lost family member, friends, and so on because of alcohol. I can’t stand it when I hear of some rock star who has been found dead because of booze or drugs.

When I was told that someone from Warrant was found died. My response was it better not be Jani Lane. When I found out it was Jani I screamed NO!!!!!!!!!! The world will miss an outstanding frontman of the 80′s. I can’t believe it but on the other hand I can. You will be missed. Hope you are up in heaven playing with all the greats of rock and roll stars that have passed on before you.

I met Jani at a Motley Crue concert back in the early 90′s. He had no idea who I was and didn’t have to even look at me but he got up, brushed through a crowd of people, and came over and talked to me for about 5 minutes of which I will never ever forget. What a guy! No goodbye, only see you soon.

  69. Paula says:

The second tragedy to my generation this year. Mike Starr, Jani Lane. My prayers go out to Jani’s friends and family and all who are affected by his death. My wish is to somehow get the message out that our past and present behavior can do irreversible damage to our bodies. Even if we find our way out of addiction the damage is already done.

  70. sandra says:

i have liked WARRENT since i was a teenager. it made me very sad to hear the sad, sad, sad news that JANIE died. I WANT TO SEND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO JANIES FAMILEY AND FRIENDS. I LOVE HIS MUSIC SO MUCH. HE MADE MY TEENAGE YEARS WONDERFUL, WITH HIS SMILE AND ALL OF WARRENTS WONDERFUL MUSIC. I LOVE YOU JANIE AND I WILL MISS YOU VERY MUCH. GOD BLESS YOU. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

  71. Destiny says:

my gut tells me he committed suicide (Jani Lane) its sad when a rock star throws there life away. the disease of addiction is something you can recover from but you have to want it. i see many of these rockstars and i think there fantasy of fame and glory overshadows the real issue.. people use drugs to escape the pain of life. sometimes the best thing is to find those who share your plight and help eachother..#ijs

  74. Madman69 says:

Jani was a hell of a songwriter. Pretty much any song from DRFSR or Cherry Pie was great, although Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Mr. Rainmaker, Blind Faith, Bed of Roses, Down Boys, and I Saw Red, etc. were my favorites. The truly great ones always go too soon. RIP brah. The music world was better from having you a part of it.

  75. Tanya Dodd says:

Jani Lane’s death is such a shock & a major blow to us all. He was an amazing talent who gave ouststanding music that made us laugh or made us cry. I love every song Warrant has came out with, but Heaven is my all time favorite. I heard him say in an interview once that he wished he had never written Cherry Pie,but I’m so glad he did because it is such a kick ass song. I will keep him in my heart forever & the memories he gave us will last a lifetime. R.I.P our beloved Jani Lane!

  81. Carey says:

Someone gave the idea on Facebook earlier that we need a behind the music show featuring Jani Lane as there is plenty of material to compile for an episode. Since, like him or not(I do), he was one of the integral parts of the music scene in the genre and era, it would be a given that something could be done to make this happen. I’m looking forward to seeing an announcement that it has been completed soon! :)

  82. Angela De Bello Herrera says:

How dare Eddie Trunk tell Jani he looked good. Jani Lane was obviously in very poor health. He was skin slapped on a skeleton. Why don’t people stop, look at the situation, and help? Jani was a wreck, and no one reached out to him. I was appalled that all the hosts acted like everything was fine. I just hope that Michael Sweet, a friend of Jani’s, said something, or maybe took an action to try to help his friend..

  83. NC says:

Hey, does anyone know what company made the leather motorcycle jacket Jani wore in the final episode of Celebrity Fit Club?
