O Music Awards: Dance Teams Break A World Record While Robyn Dances On Her Own

|

Last night, while standing on a riser in the middle of a sea of costumed, half-naked Angelinos gettin’ down to Robyn, I shouted to no one in particular, “This is so f*cking cool!” The ethereal Swedish singer was performing as part of MTV’s O Music Awards, which celebrates the best in online music with an interactive and strictly digital interface. Fans voted online (over 22.2 million times) in categories such as Digital Genius (Bjork) and Best Web Born Artist (Kina Grannis), and the show was streamed live on MTV.com, VH1.com and LOGOtv.com.

On Sunday night a 24-hour dance party kicked off over at The Roxy in an attempt to break the world record for Longest Dance Marathon by a Team. Did you catch that? THEY DANCED FOR OVER 24 HOURS. Mission was accomplished Monday night just as Robyn was revealed from behind a giant white curtain to the surprised WeHo crowd, bopping her head as she sang “Call Your Girlfriend.” In front of me a man wearing giant golden angel wings danced next to a cowboy, as a couple of black swans twirled behind them. As a relative newcomer to LA, I got a little choked up over how festive and fun the Halloween scene is in West Hollywood, where 400,000+ people come together to trick or treat the night away. Strangers decked out in elaborate get-ups embraced and posed for photographs together, screaming with excitement every time Robyn started up a new song. Groups of people got down together in impromptu dance circles, and the crowd spent as much time holding their iPhones in the air as they did waving their hands to the music. Later in the night the singer finished her amazing set with “Dancing On My Own” and brought two fans up onstage to dance. Their costumes: Robyn.

But perhaps the best part of the night was the altruistic nature of the event. The dance party raised more than $32,000 for non-profits that work to fight bullying against LGBTQ teens. Like I said, f*cking cool.
