It’s a rare woman who can pull off a signature look like, say, wearing all-white every day, but LisaRaye McCoy manages to do just that. McCoy, who stars on Single Ladies, mixes up her wardrobe to add color on the show when she plays Keisha Greene, but when she’s out in public, she’s usually rocking any shade of cloud, marshmallow, or snow she can find, and somehow she manages to look bold and distinctive every time. She has help of course, in the form of style expert Okera Banks, and Banks has offered to give us an inside look at how she dresses her white-hot star on red carpets and big events, including where she shops and how to get the star’s looks for less. Get to know Okera Banks a little bit better below, and then check out our gallery of LisaRaye’s most recent looks, which includes all of Banks’ style tips and insider information.
Okera Banks has established herself as one of the leading costume designers and celebrity stylists in the industry. Possessing a body of work that ranges from TV, film, music and sports to red carpet appearances and photo shoots, Banks has cleverly grown her brand to include feature blockbuster films and national commercials to her credit.
When asked about her personal views regarding the fashion industry, Banks states “For me, style is all about what makes you feel comfortable, confident and sexy; whether you’re on the set or on the red carpet.” She also adds, “The key is in building trust with your client so that you’re creating a look and designing an image that enhances their overall persona.”
A native of Washington, D.C., but raised in Charleston, SC, the vivacious and personable Banks earned a dual degree in Fashion Design, Merchandising and Marketing from Clark Atlanta University. Prior to completing her education, her fashion ambition led her to New York to intern with Mirabella, a leading fashion publication. As an assistant fashion editor, Banks absorbed American and European fashion elements, which fed and sustained her interest in up and coming trends, leading fashion designers, textures, and accessories. Upon completing her studies, Banks relocated to Los Angeles and quickly became part of the trend setting fashion world. Her current work illustrates her versatility with clients that include Garcelle Beauvais, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Robin Givens, LisaRaye McCoy, Niecy Nash, Chris Tucker and many more.
