Style expert Okera Banks has dressed a number of A-list celebrities during her career (LisaRaye McCoy and Mary J. Blige to name a couple), so we trust her judgment completely when she tells us someone looks good. That’s why we enlisted her to help us pick out some of the most fashion-forward, well-dressed celebs at the 2012 Do Something! Awards, which air tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1. Dozens of celebs walked the blue carpet, but only eight made Okera’s list, so take a look at our gallery below to find out who got it right, according to the expert.
Okera Banks has established herself as one of the leading costume designers and celebrity stylists in the industry. Possessing a body of work that ranges from TV, film, music and sports to red carpet appearances and photo shoots, Banks has cleverly grown her brand to include feature blockbuster films and national commercials to her credit.
When asked about her personal views regarding the fashion industry, Banks states “For me, style is all about what makes you feel comfortable, confident and sexy; whether you’re on the set or on the red carpet.” She also adds, “The key is in building trust with your client so that you’re creating a look and designing an image that enhances their overall persona.”
A native of Washington, D.C., but raised in Charleston, SC, the vivacious and personable Banks earned a dual degree in Fashion Design, Merchandising and Marketing from Clark Atlanta University. Prior to completing her education, her fashion ambition led her to New York to intern with Mirabella, a leading fashion publication. As an assistant fashion editor, Banks absorbed American and European fashion elements, which fed and sustained her interest in up and coming trends, leading fashion designers, textures, and accessories. Upon completing her studies, Banks relocated to Los Angeles and quickly became part of the trend setting fashion world. Her current work illustrates her versatility with clients that include Garcelle Beauvais, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Robin Givens, LisaRaye McCoy, Niecy Nash, Chris Tucker and many more.
