Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon And Thurston Moore Announce Marriage Split

Alt rock’s power couple is no more. Sonic Youth founding members Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have announced that their marriage is over after 27 years. Though their fall tour is set to continue as scheduled, the future of the group remains up in the air. A rep for their record company released the following statement over the weekend:

“Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”

The two co-founded the New York-based Sonic Youth in 1981 along with guitarist Lee Ranaldo. Their 1988 classicDaydream Nation is regarded as a rock masterpiece, and laid the framework for alternative bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam to explode onto mainstream airwaves in the early 90s. Though entering their thirtieth year as a band, Sonic Youth’s popularity and creativity remains undiminished. Their latest album, The Eternal, was released in 2009 to rave reviews.
