Earlier this month, Drake released a new song called “Marvin’s Room” on his blog, October’s Very Own. If you haven’t heard it yet, the track consists of an intoxicated Drizzy vulnerably addressing an ex-girlfriend, trying to convince her that she can “do better” than the boo with whom she’s currently in a relationship. Coaxing her with his evocative fairy dust, the still-smitten singing rapper can seemingly not let go. Now considered a contemporary drunk-dialing anthem, “Marvin’s Room” is Wheelchair Jimmy’s Drake’s personal adjusting-to-celebrity confession session, yet still relatable enough to potentially rouse emotional baggage from our own civilian relationships past. Striking similar chords with female vocalists, pop/R&B singer JoJo decided to remake the song last week, delivering her own version from a female’s point of view, and snagging quite a bit of buzz off her naughty lyrics. Teyana Taylor, too, just transformed “Marvin’s Room” into “My Room,” proving that she clearly didn’t give a damn about the poor guy in the original song’s title. And speaking of this “Marvin,” you probably noticed that Drake doesn’t mention him at all on the track, triggering a head-scratcher we found ourselves dealing with: If he’s important enough to garnish the song’s title, why the EFF don’t we know who Marvin is?

Just two weeks ago, after a short stint in rehab and a clear-headed, successful performance at London’s 100 Club, it was reported that the British songbird’s sobriety was finally on the mend. But in Serbia on Saturday night, Winehouse kicked-off what was supposed to be her European tour, showing up visibly inebriated on stage. While the lyrics were imagery-inspiring on their own, you’ll see in the sneak that Weird Al has delivered true-to-form visuals that manage to simultaneously mock and salute Mother Monster. Snatching Gaga’s signature looks and making them his own, Al transforms to perform, dancing around to her choreography (albeit with his head on a female body) and flaunting grossly exaggerated versions her outfits — a feat we didn’t think was possible! In all seriousness, this Sunday marks yet another Fathers’ Day, and it goes without saying that the job is a tough one that deserves recognition. Dirty diapers, puberty meltdowns, giving proper advice… the list of fatherlyduties is literally never-ending. And that, my friends, is exactly why we have to hand it to the gentlemenwho’ve made it onour Top 20 Daddy Tally list.
Not only are these distinguished men highly successful in the ultra-competitive music industry, but they’ve managed to achieve their success while also fatheringHUGE tribes of children. That’s right, each papa bear on our Top 20 list has upwards of five children, and whether it’s serial philanderer Bob Marley, sperm donor extraordinaire David Crosby (hey Melissa Etheridge!) or rumored father of 75 bouncing babies (!!!), Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, they all have more than “earned” their spot.
On the surface, Maxwell’s “Fistful of Tears” comes off as a song that’s urging a woman to shake her unnecessary insecurities and, in the process, perhaps save him some unnecessary grief. Lyrics like “all you got to do is raise up, face up, stay up, all things will heal” make sense under that context and resonate deeply, so when the sultry singer revealed to our VH1 Storytellers audience that the song’s inspiration was actually drawn from the war in the Middle East, we were taken aback. But as he explains in the above sneak, Maxwell’s song-writing is a “three-prong experience,” alllowing him to apply (1) what he’s going through personally, (2) what he sees going on in the world, and (3) what he hopes the listener will get out of it, and therefore, our previous interpretation may still stand.
Before performing the powerful ballad in this clip, Maxwell candidly opens up about his opinions on the “religious war” that has been waged by the US, advocating a peaceful coexistence for all. “I hate the fact that we’re fighting, I can’t wait for the troops to come back,” said the R&B veteran, adding, “If your God is name this, and my God is named that, I’m cool.” And despite the fact that Max hates to name drop, he delivered this information via a story about being in the studio with Mary J. Blige and Anthony Hamilton, taming his somewhat reclusive mystique and making the story all-the-more juicy. Just as we were nodding our heads in new-found understanding, however, the soul singer brought us back full circle, noting that the song is also about trying to show someone “how great they are, when they can’t see how great they are.” A-ha! Not only was our original theory right after all, but it seems Maxwell also stayed true to his trusty three prongs– touching on both his life and world observations, all while allowing us to decode and evaluate for ourselves.
Before officially catching the wild wave of success that he continues to ride to this day, Kanye West was on a mission to prove his own talent and worth to the world. During that time, hip hop vet Jay-Z was the big brother, the mentor, and the boss man, letting Kanye audition tracks for placement on Roc-A-Fella Records artists’ albums. Fast-forward twelve years, and it’s Kanye who is now on the verge of building an empire, and his one-stop-shopping label, management, and production hybrid G.O.O.D Music could be his ticket out from under the giant-sized shadow of Jigga Man. Things move pretty fast in hip hop, but whether you know it or not, you may already be familiar with some artists Kanye’s signed to his squad, including Common, John Legend, “Day N Night” breakout artist Kid Cudi, and Pusha T: one half of brotherly rap duo Clipse, and the artist who performed with ‘Ye on last year’s VMAs. Other members of the G.O.O.D Music team (acronym for Getting Out Our Dreams), however, are either newer to the music world, or still taking time to build a tangible buzz. Either way,they might be worth getting familiar with before it’s too late!
Last Thursday night, in front of a ravenous Brooklyn crowd and with the help of Heineken’s summer concert series Red Star Access, Kanye unleashed a G.O.O.D Music showcase on the masses. Performing solo hits and giving his crop of artists their own short sets to shine, Yeezy would go back and forth appearing on stage, and at times, joined his proteges for songs they’ve collaborated on together. A good example and important collabo to note, freshly leaked “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” is a song that will be included on G.O.O.D/Def Jam rapper Big Sean’s debut album Finally Famous, out June 28th. At the album’s exclusive listening party held (also in NYC) on Tuesday of last week, Kanye compared the young, up-and-coming rapper to Beyonce, saying he had the potential to be what she is to R&B, but in hip hop. Hell of an introduction, wouldn’t you say? Certainly no pressure to Sean, who luckily already has a healthy following off of mixtapes released over the past four years. And speaking of Beyonce, there’s a rumor brewing that Kanye and his team of G.O.O.D. Music hooligans (including Pusha, CyHi Da Prynce, Kid Cudi and Big Sean) will guest-star on a yet-to-be-released remix for “Party,” the song that we’re keeping on eye on for Song of the Summer.
Imagine you’re a successful musician, returning home after being on tour for months. Groggy and wiped, you walk in your bedroom to find your most prized possession destroyed, and the blade of a 12-inch carving knife stuck, standing up, in the middle of your bed. Creepytown, right? We’ve got a live one! Leaking last night with the rest of Beyoncé’s album, 4, “Party” might be one of the strongest new contenders for our Song of the Summer, and we’re hoping it will also be her third single. Produced by both Kanye West and Consequence and featuring an insane verse from novelty-spitter André 3000, this sweetly sexy track delivers something for every listener, including a silly line from Yeezy woven in-and-out that’s so cheesy it might actually grow on us (I mean, “swag sauce” and “dripping swagu”? If you say so!).
But don’t let the song title deceive you; while “Party” can easily help complete a laid-back, trill evening with friends, its sound is more reminiscent of a come-hither lady anthem from the R&B 90s. And who better to pull off a grown and sexy summer smash than B, singing sassy lyrics that demand the most intense kind of intimacy from her suitor– but only if he “don’t tell nobody tomorrow.” The need for intimacy, however, is a self-proclaimed bi-product of a (perhaps unrequited?) love that crowns the track’s endearing confesional nature. Of course Beyoncé is a happily married woman, but at one time, she was a single lady looking for love and cruising for a man to be her equal. Perfectly suited for brewing summer romances, “Party” can serve as the backdrop to a BBQ, a bikini-targeted workout session, or -you guessed it- some good old-fashioned boot knockin’. Proceed with caution, y’all!
It’s a guessing game, but each year, concert-goers fantasize about what special-guest performers will join artists already on Hot 97’s Summer Jam bill with surprise on-stage appearances. Last night, in front of a crowd of 50,000 fans, some of hip hop’s biggest names performed in East Rutherford, New Jersey’s New Meadowlands Stadium, and while there may not have been that jaw-dropping “big moment,” (read: no Kanye or Jay-Z, no never-before-heard songs, and no beefs), the crowd was kept thoroughly entertained by the oodles of rappers that poured onto the stage.
Other highlights from last night’s event included a dancing Chris Brown bringing out Busta Rhymes to perform “Look At Me Now” (sans Weezy), Lloyd Banks welcoming Swizz Beatz, Ryan Leslie, and Mobb Deep to the stage with him, and Diddy joining his Bugatti brother, Ross, to help close the show. After a miserable NYC winter, the weather is again warm, and we’re all about hitting these streets! But what will our summer-lovin’ soundtrack include? Since the pop music monster is one that defies taming, most of us can already venture to guess what we’ll likely hear blasting out of car windows while dining al fresco and laying poolside, but for me, it’s all about the songs that may or may not hit the mainstream radar. Specifically, songs that light your summer on fire and arouse flashbulb memory nostalgia for years thereafter. As a music head, I can’t wait to find out what will be this year’s perfect audio accompaniment during glorious, sweaty cocktail-glass pre-game rituals, or what I’ll have on repeat in my headphones as I dodge European tourists in Times Square. Until then, here’s hoping that the radio gods are listening, and (fingers crossed!) that they have good taste.
NOMINATION: Friendly Fires, “Live Those Days Tonight” EXPLANATION: If mainstream radio could just bend some rules and make room for an indie-pop dance record, this next few months would certainly be a bit lovelier. Summoning nostalgia for the (allegedly) more-fun 80s past that he never had the chance to experience, Friendly Fires’ frontman Ed Macfarlane vows to one-up his predecessors on this uptempo, synth-happy slice of audio heaven. Heavy with drums and feel-good vibes, “Live Those Days Tonight” is the first single off of the band’s critically acclaimed sophomore release, Pala, and is also the perfect summer party accessory!
