Zooey Deschanel Sings The National Anthem At The World Series

Everyone’s favorite indie sweetheart, Zooey Deschanel, belted out her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at Game 4 of the World Series last night. Giving a very serious performance, an initially fidgety Deschanel quickly eased into the big notes with her signature charm, all a flutter of doe eyes and half smiles. Keeping her hands firmly folded in front of her throughout the entire performance, we’re thinking Deschanel’s stoicism and poise had something to do with wearing high heels on grass — a girl’s got to balance, after all! And matching her red pumps, Deschanel’s dress was a show stopper in itself: Half candy cane, half flower bed, and appropriately festive.

No stranger to vocal gymnastics, we’ve been fans of Deschanel ever since she saved Christmas with her whimsical voice in Elf. Promoting her new show, New Girl, Deschanel’s World Series performance has transformed her from a manic pixie dream girl to pop culture’s newest darling. Not to mention a sporting hero. Indeed, as star of her own TV show and fronting indie pop band She & Him, it seems like there’s nothing the girl can’t do these days (especially now that she’s added “patriot” to her resume). And now we’re just wondering if her new crown as the World Series’ favorite anthem singer will be stripped tonight by our recent Posted artist, Demi Lovato, who will be following Deschanel’s performance with her own interpretation at Game 5 of the Series.

The Top 34 Moments That Shaped Kanye West (Also: Happy Birthday, Yeezy!)

Today is Kanye West‘s 34th birthday, and while we would be happy to praise our favorite controversial artist to high heaven, we’re sure no amount of laudation would be enough for the notoriously immodest West. So we decided to take a different approach: pinpointing the 34 moments that shaped Kanye. Some shaped his life; some shaped his persona; some shaped the way he’s seen. All of them either have found or will find their way into his highly personal music. Happy birthday, Yeezy!

DATE: June 8, 1977
EVENT: Kanye West is born
It wouldn’t be Kanye’s birthday if he hadn’t been born thirty-four years ago today, in Atlanta, where his parents settled after they both finished graduate school.

DATE: August 28, 1980
EVENT: Kanye’s parents, Ray And Donda, divorce
In her memoir Raising Kanye, Donda West recalls that, to her mind, her husband Ray was putting his new photography studio ahead of his own family, so she filed for divorce and full custody of young Kanye. Two weeks after the divorce was final, Kanye and his mother left Atlanta for Chicago. Imagine the life he might have led had he grown up in Atlanta!

VH1 Top 20 Host Goes Behind-The-Scenes At VH1′s Best Cruise Ever

We invited VH1 Top 20 host Jim Shearer to share his observations from VH1′s Best Cruise Ever, which featured more than a dozen bands and sailed from Tampa to Cozumel.

I’m on land again, which means VH1′s second annual Best Cruise Ever is now over. The Script was wonderful (my favorite live show during our four days at sea), I met a bunch of cool people who keep me employed by waking up early every Saturday morning to watch the Top 20 Countdown, I got to eat warm chocolate cake every night for dessert (mmm), and my band even got to play a couple of sets on the boat. I forgot to bring my diary on the cruise, so a pocket cam had to do. Here’s my recap. Enjoy! — Jim Shearer

Viewers Gaga Over Adele’s Aretha Cover

It’s been said that VH1 Unplugged is a contradiction in music, going from big audiences to a small and plugged to unplugged. So it makes sense that Starburst, whose tagline is “it’s a juicy contradiction,” was excited to present “The Contradictions Track,” where artists perform a different kind of song for the audience, one that’s not their own. Before Adele taped VH1 Unplugged, we asked what cover you’d most like to hear her tackle. Among the responses were Sheryl Crow, Grace Potter, Patsy Cline and Ozzy Osbourne. But Adele sang Aretha Franklin, probably a more daunting act to cover than any of the suggestions. Even though Adele has a world-class voice and specializes in a vintage soul/R&B sound, we wondered how you’d react to a 22-year-old Brit covering one of America’s all-time greatest singers. After the jump, some of the responses from our live viewing party.

Dr. Drew: ‘Charlie Sheen’s Life Is In Big Trouble’

In a sneak to Charlie Sheen: Winning … Or Losing It?, we mentioned that Dr. Drew has made repeated comments about Charlie Sheen‘s psychiatric state. But in this one-hour VH1 News special, Dr. Drew teams up with a roster of mental health professionals to provide the most comprehensive diagnosis to date. Dr. Drew first explains why his experience allows him to diagnose someone he’s never met, then shares the details of his opinion:

“It is clear that Charlie Sheen is showing signs of Hypomania, an elevated mood that can occur with or without depressive episodes. Hypomania is the hallmark symptom of another larger psychiatric condition, bipolar disorder. Inflated with their own grandiosity patients may boast of their own achievements and special abilities.”

While Dr. Drew said Charlie’s condition is as serious as any patient he’s ever treated, he doesn’t think it’s too late. The video below explains what must happen for Charlie to get better. (Hint: It starts with an intervention).
