Critics Choice Awards: People vs Critics

It happens a lot. Professional critics and pundits think one thing, and regular citizens think another. It happens with movies, it happens with TV shows, it happens with rock ‘n’ roll. Last night at the Critics Choice Awards it happened again.

During the past month, we asked you guys to vote for your favorite actors, actresses and movies, and in several spots there was a schism between what the ones you chose and those the crit’s preferred. Of course you did agree on a few things, too. We’re entering in the Awards Show season; the Grammys and Oscars are on the horizon. Let’s just see how close the two sides were at the CCA extravaganza.

Watch the entire show right here.

Watch the full red carpet presentation here.

Critics’ Choice Awards: Red Carpet Photos

CCA may be the thinking man’s awards show, but that doesn’t mean the stars walking the red carpet can’t look hot. Check photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Marisa Tomei, Josh Brolin, Kate Beckinsale and many others.

Live Blog From The Critics Choice Show!

As the celebs stroll the red carpet and head up to the podium for tonight’s Critics Choice Awards, our guest blogger, Andrea Linett, provides pithy punditry on their fashion choices and their pop culture impact. Linett’s the Creative Director of Lucky, the award-winning magazine of shopping and style. She and her team have already scrutinized some of the CCA nominees; check their spins on everyone from Angelina Jolie to Cate Blanchett. Feel free to weigh in on Andrea’s comments. Let’s watch the show together.

8:25 Welcome, everyone! Get ready. The Red Carpet is about to begin.

8:33 Virginia Madsen’s wearing blue velvet. How hot is that???

8:35 Enough with the Visitor… what about props to Step Brothers?!

8:37 I love love loved Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler. Love the flutter at the top of that dress too. A far stretch from her character!

8:39 I’ve been obsessed with Amy Adams since Junebug. I love how effortless she looks!

8:42 Viola Davis!!! Who knew she was so glamorous in real life?

8:46 Freida Pinto, the girl from Slumdog Millionaire, is beyond gorgeous. Love the Grecian dress. That hair!

8:47 Clint Eastwood is like an older version of my husband. Crazy tie…

8:50 Yowza. Hello, Mister Josh Brolin. Sooo Clark Cable for the 2000’s!

8:54 They keep mentioning Brad and Angelina. Where oh where are they?

8:57 Angela Bassett is proving that the trend is upswept hair and HUUUUGE dangling earrings.

8:59 Sarah Silverman is FINALLY showing off her good looks the way she should. She looks like a bombshell. Mazel tov!

9:00 The red carpet was cool. Now it’s time for the show.

9:07 MICKEY ROURKE DESERVES BEST ACTOR!!! Those hair extensions!

9:13 I’m disappointed that Angelina’s not the bombshell I want her to be… maybe she’s turned Euro Chic?

9:15 There weren’t even any cute girls to covet in Tropic Thunder. My niece Libby is bonkers for Corben Bleu and now I finally get it.

9:24 Okay… Eva Longoria has NEVER looked better. She might as well have jumped out of a fashion magazine.

9:30 I want to hate Freida Pinto, mostly because I want to look like her. Ah!!! Poor Angelina looked kind of jealous. But she’s too beautiful too. Sigh.

9:39 Rooney rocks. Nice Beatles-just-came-to-America suits!

9:45 Mclovin’s doing a nice monochromatic look. Is Katy Perry his prom date?

9:54 I wish foxy Marisa’s dress showed off her legs more. oh well…

10:00 Check out our red carpet photo gallery.

10:06 I wish Virginia left her purse on her chair, but she looks phenomenal anyway. Mr. Big’s pants are a tad too small…

10:15 I was on the edge of my seat for this. I love Kate but Marisa and Viola were my picks. Wah Waah.

10:21 Aaaamy, whatchoo wanna do? I think ah could vote for you (for best dressed/styled!) and my husband agrees 100%. Just like Amy Adams, Diane Lane is the perfect mix of glam and natural.

10:33 Oh Sarah! Why the sneakers??? Oy vey.

10:43 A tie?! So perfect. We called it over here!

10:45 Anne Hathaway looks like the most beautiful black and white cookie!

10: 52 Re: ELizabeth Banks, I can’t forget Michelle Williams getting ragged on for her gorgeous yellow dress at the oscars. Hooray for Elizabeth for taking the risk and wearing a perfect and sexy yellow stunner.

10:53 I feel robbed again! Mickey Rourke, not Sean Penn, is the one for me!

10:59 Slumdog Millionaire!

11:01 Well it’s over and I must say, all the ladies seemed unusually beautiful in their understated looks. Is it a nod to the economy? Is it just that black is the new black? Hmmm… I hope to join you next time! Log onto Lucky mag tomorrow morning for my top style picks of the night. xxoo

11:04 Head to the Critics Choice site to see photos and videos of the red carpet and the show. Check all the winners.

Live Twitter Commentary From Critic’s Choice Awards

“I never understood why people took movies so seriously. You’re going to see a film about a man with a bat on his chest and you’re taking it seriously…a man made of iron and you’re taking it seriously. It’s fundamentally ridiculous, yet everyone’s interested in it. So why not talk about in a way that’s fun. ”

That’s Mark Ramsey talking about how he came up with the vibe for his moviejuice Web site. Take a look: he likes to mess with the thing he loves most - movies - and he leads with his humorous side. Tonight, he going send a stream of Twitter missives from the Critics Choice Awards show in L.A. VH1 airs the event and its red carpet pre-show live, at 8:30 pm. ET.

Ramsey chose the satire route because “it’s more fun that way. Movie juice posts are “less of a review of a movie you either haven’t seen, won’t see or did see, and more of a theme park ride through a movie, a chance to have some thrills,” says Ramsey. “And c’mon, it’s more fun to enjoy a theme part ride than it is to read a film synopsis. Even The Onion, when they cut to a movie review, gets dead serious. Why? You can have a awful lot of fun with teasing a movie.”

We decided to ask Ramsey some quick questions about his favorite subject:

Critic Tweets Live From the CCA Show

We always bring you the scoop about VH1 shows, and this year those watching the Critics Choice Awards on television (January 8, 8:30 pm ET) will have an extra dose of info coming their way. Mark Ramsey, film critic and top dog of Moviejuice.com, will be our mole in the room, sending twitter missives to our blog as the show moves through its paces. Be here that night to get a first hand view of all the celeb action.

Ramsey’s a veteran blogger, offering wry commentary on the world of film. He’s also part of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, an expert who voted on this year’s winners and a pundit who’s made appearances on CNN, E! and VH1. ā€œBack before there were all these idiots commenting on things, I was an idiot commenting on things.ā€

With a grin he says he tries ā€œto steer clear of all awards dinner whenever possible, unless I’m the one receiving the award - which is unlikely beyond all measure.ā€ But as a member in good standing of the BFCA, this is one annual bash that he enjoys attending.

Critics Choice Awards: Rooney’s Fave Films

This year the Critics Choice Awards are going to rock a little louder. Revered L.A. band Rooney will be on hand, playing presenters and winners on and off the stage with some of the smartest and catchiest pop-rock around. We’ve been Rooney fans for a long time, and during the years invited them into do an acoustic concert for us, and tell us all about their favorite videos.

Since they’re part of our CCA show on January 8 (start with the Red Carpet bash and watch it live on VH1 at 8:30 pm ET), we thought we’d get some info about their own movie habits. When they’re traveling in the band bus there’s a hierarchy in place. The back lounge tends to be the “low-brow scene,” and the forward lounge screens “art films or classics.” Jump on with them and you might see anything from Casablanca to Wild Hogs.

Here are the guys recent faves:

Robert Carmine: I used to go to movies a lot, but I’m staying home and watching ā€˜em on DVD these days. It makes life better. I watched Trading Places and Stripes the other night – fantastic. This year I liked Iron Man. I think Robert Downey, Jr is awesome. It was cool that they cast a non pretty boy. It was an oddball choice – it made the movie better. I didn’t freak out over The Dark Knight, but it was really good. I don’t like how people try to make it into a ā€œmasterpiece.ā€ It was a great action movie; don’t make it into something it’s not. Don’t like it when something is over hyped. I saw Indiana Jones and James Bond – no comment. I liked Burn After Reading a lot. I love the Coen Brothers, I totally jock anything they do. Pitt was funny. It’s cool when someone known for one thing does something unexpected. He’s bold.

See more after the jump.
