It’s easy to forget that TRL was more than a show where tweens would make their parents drag them to Times Square on a pilgrimage to run their vocals ragged, screaming for their favorite stars. TRL was a defining show for MTV, popular music and kids of a certain generation. It’s also easy to forget the caliber of celebrities that appeared on the show, which ran from 1998-2008. Madonna, Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, hell, even Angelina Jolie, they all appeared on the show often. In honor of the new VH1 Rock Doc The TRL Decade, which airs January 29, we’d like to take a look back at the VJ’s who made the show what it was, and the celebrities that came down to 1515 Broadway to hang with them. (We invite you to take a closer look at the photo on the upper left in our gallery — yes, that is indeed Destiny’s Child, Eve, 3LW, and Dream hanging with Carson Daly.) And of course, check out the documentary when it airs on Sunday January 29 at 9:30 pm ET/PT.

Enrique Iglesias Premieres Cameo-Filled, Behind The Music-Inspired Video
Enrique Iglesias is reissuing Euphoria with a DVD and bonus tracks, including the single “I Like How It Feels”—which would be a run-of-the-mill tour video if not for the famous friends featured. But wait—it’s in a sort of flashback, behind-the-scenes style, and features a bit of footage from 1979. Call us narcissistic, but this feels inspired by his July 31 episode of Behind The Music!

Wilco And Blink-182: Rock Dads With New Albums
Jeff Tweedy of Wilco talks to Brian Hiatt about “dad-rock” in Men’s Journal. All three members of Blink-182 mention parenthood in individual interviews with Andy Greene for Rolling Stone. Speaking of which, Mark Hoppus is one of the punk-rock fathers documented in the upcoming film The Other F Word, which now has a trailer. (P.S. Billboard reports that both Wilco’s and Blink 182′s new albums are predicted to debut in the top ten next week.)

It’s easy to think about the months following September 11, 2001 as a rude awakening from an imagined bliss (doubly fictitious, in that the peace only ever appeared to exist, and that it wasn’t that blissful to begin with). Nevertheless, the events of that day had a dramatic—and traumatic—effect on Americans, not least through our consumption of popular culture. But before the slew of original compositions responding directly to the event (of which Sound of the City has compiled what, in their estimation, were the nine worst), many listeners were already looking to music for comfort, guidance, or other emotional needs, while rejecting other music that flew in the face of those needs. Here’s what people especially did—and did not—want to hear.

Lee Greenwood “God Bless The U.S.A.” and Whitney Houston “The Star-Spangled Banner”

In the second full chart week after 9/11, Houston’s 1991 rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” re-entered the Hot 100 at #50, and Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” debuted at #16 (in 1984, the song had hit the country charts but never crossed over). In a pattern that would be reversed once digital sales became common, the songs had two chart peaks—the first when radio’s support was strongest, and the second when physical singles were re-released. Sales of “God Bless the USA” were strong enough to keep it on the chart, but not to match its debut. “The Star-Spangled Banner,” on the other hand, hit #6 on the strength of sales (and continuing radio support).

We got pretty excited about Adam Lambert‘s episode of Behind The Music (airing Sunday, August 7) when we unveiled the sneak peek yesterday (so excited, in fact, that we were briefly convinced that it premiered this week). But after seeing the preview of the episode that does premiere on Sunday, July 31, at 10PM ET/PT—Behind the Music: Enrique Iglesias—we’re more than willing to wait.

In this sneak peek that we shared exclusively with EW’s Music Mix, Enrique Iglesias recalls the overnight celebrity (especially among women) that accompanied the year following the release of his eponymous debut in November 1995. The record sold over nearly two million copies in the United States alone, going platinum faster even than Selena‘s Amor Prohibido. In both new and archival interviews, Iglesias discusses the magnitude and intensity of female attention that attended his newfound fame. (“Before I was a singer, I was getting dumped all the time,” he recalled in 1999.)

Others speak more frankly. Andres Restrepo, who toured with Iglesias during this period, characterized exactly how wild the mobs of female fans, hanging out of cars going upwards of fifty miles an hour, could be: “I felt like I was on a safari in Africa, getting attacked by all these lions and stuff!”

Don’t miss the premiere of Behind the Music: Enrique Iglesias Sunday, July 31, at 10PM ET/PT.

According to the calendar, until the Summer Solstice occurs on June 21, we’re still firmly in the grasp of Spring. That said, pretty much everyone we know considers “summertime” to be the period of time between Memorial Day and Labor Day. To wit, this past weekend millions of Americans broke out their barbeque grills, removed their sandals from storage, and spent the long weekend soaking up the sunshine with family and friends for the first time since last summer (and, if the temperatures here in NYC were any indication, it sure as hell felt like summer with temperatures hovering in the low 90s).

One of our favorite parts about the summertime is the way that music takes on an even more omnipresent role in all of our lives. Sure, we all listen to music year-round, but during the winter months, music is generally something you only experience either inside or through earbuds. Once the summertime rolls around, though, suddenly you start hearing music blasting EVERYWHERE: rattling out from car speakers, blaring from boomboxes while you’re lounging poolside, emanating from an iPod dock when you’re chilling in the park enjoying a picnic, and even crackling through old transistor radios while you’re camping in the woods.

And each year, one song emerges from the pack to stand out as that year’s Song of the Summer. It’s not generally a title that is officially anointed by any governing board, but we here at VH1 wanted to put a little science behind the emotion that these Songs of Summer convey.

Hence, we’re excited to announce that we here at VH1 will be tracking this year’s Song of the Summer from now until Labor Day. So, you’re no doubt wondering, what artist has the lead out of the gate: Lady Gaga? Adele? Bruno Mars? Continue along to find out…

What keeps Enrique Iglesias up at night? Porn. You read that right. To find out what else keeps the Latin heartthrob awake, check this out.

Enrique_dingdongSome people think of Enrique Iglesias as primarily a singer. I think of him as primarily a penis-haver. For almost two years, Enrique’s down-below microphone has stuck out in public discourse much more than his music. "Hero" schmero — Enrique proves that if you really want to make an impact, you should talk about your him-hang.

The latest word from Enrique is that he’s "huge," but that’s a recent development. Enrique’s public peen powwow started in October 2005, when he "mock seriously" told a Houston Press reporter: "The next product I’m gonna put my name on is extra-small condoms. I can never find extra-small condoms, and I know it’s really embarrassing for people — you know, from experience. Hopefully people won’t be ashamed when I step forward." But it turned out that no one was more ashamed than Enrique.
