Nas Controversy Fizzes Up

nas-n-word.jpgThe controversy over Nas‘ forthcoming ablum, Nigger, is growing more intense with news that one of its songs subverts the old Dr. Pepper jingle by replacing the word “Pepper” with the N-word:

“I’m a nigger, he’s a nigger,
she’s a nigger, we’re a nigger
Wouldn’t you like to be a nigger too?”
- From Nas’ “Be A Nigger Too” (Listen here)

Before this latest shocker, a lot had been written about who is in support of Nas’ album title (Jay-Z, Common, Alicia Keys, Don Imus) and who isn’t (NAACP, Jesse Jackson, 50 Cent). 50 Cent, among others, say Nas is going for “shock value.” The fact that rappers have embraced the word and rendered it less hurtful and more banal through overuse for at least two decades may lend some credence to his claim. Maybe this is why Nas’ earlier statement seemed kind of weak:

“I wanna make the word easy on muthaf***ers’ ears. You see how white boys ain’t mad at ‘cracker’ ’cause it don’t have the same [sting] as ‘nigger’? I want ‘nigger’ to have less meaning [than] ‘cracker.’”

Nas’ new song could pull more people into his corner. Jay-Z’s earlier remark and Nas’ employment of the word now seem to be on point: “I know he’s very intelligent and there’s a reason behind what he’s doing.” Sure, Nas is “lessening the sting.” But he also seems to be up to something else. Pairing a once-omnipresent commercial song that is childlike in its simplicity with one of the most incendiary words in the English language raises so many questions that it could make heads explode. Could Nas be commenting on how big business packages and sells just about anything to kids — from soft drinks to gangsta rap? Could Nas be attempting to hit back at the very commercialization that has damaged hip-hop as an art form? Could he be doing all of the above and stirring up controversy to sell albums, too? Nas’ intentions may not yet be totally clear, but we’re all waiting to hear more. [Source: MTV News; Image of Nas and Kelis: Getty]

Grammy Predictions: Who Will Win What?

amy-winehouse-2-515x.jpg

Each year the act of predicting which artists will take home a Grammy becomes one of pop music’s great guessing games. Someone picks a category, and everyone becomes a pundit. That includes us. We want your comments, too. Do you think our choices are right? Watch the show with us this Sunday night, and join our LIVE BLOG commentary right here at 8 pm.

RECORD OF THE YEAR

Beyonce: “Irreplaceable”
This screed about how the value of self-important men begins with a set of instructions: “To the left, to the left/ Everything you own in a box to the left.” Wonder how Jay-Z took that line?

Foo Fighters: “The Pretender”
Moderate rock, Dave Grohl-style: loud, passionate, dynamic, classic, and prog. Don’t forget the mildly rousing refrain of “Who are you?” But, sorry, it’s still boring.

Rihanna: “Umbrella”
Barbados’ answer to Madonna returned with a Jerry Bruckheimer-sized blockbuster of a disc, and this song, which stuck in our heads for the entire summer, was the centerpiece.

Justin Timberlake: “What Goes Around . . . Comes Around”
When coupled with Timbaland’s production, Justin’s soft-pop R&B added up to a great big rock opera.

Amy Winehouse: “Rehab”
They tried to make her go to rehab; she said no, no, no. Then she said yes, got some help in London, was denied a U.S. entry visa, and can’t perform at the Grammys. Too bad, since the song so thoroughly sums up the problems of 2007.

SHOULD WIN: “Rehab”
WILL WIN: “Umbrella”

BEST HIP-HOP ALBUM

Common: Finding Forever
Half hard, half hippie. Working the poetic tip, he keeps his political and philosophical ideas up front. Kanye’s production, even when it’s florid, does a great job of selling ‘em.

Nas: Hip-Hop Is Dead
Big indictment from the Queens MC, but Nas is nothing if not a provocateur. Though it’s not a home run, it’s gripping. And that flow of his can still make your jaw drop.

Jay-Z: Kingdom Come
Jigga bounced back, and there were lots of sharp moments, but it also felt like the true glory days of this mic fiend are gone. The American Gangster soundtrack is way stronger.

TI: T.I. vs T.I.P.
Yep, Mr. Split Personality may have been at war with himself, but that tension provided for revealing glimpse into the king of Dirty South’s psyche.

Kanye West: Graduation
Haughty is as haughty does. Hip-hop’s most reliable MC hasn’t given up on positioning himself as hip-hop’s most successful MC. But his bluster has oodles of creativity behind it, no question.

SHOULD WIN: Graduation
WILL WIN: Graduation

“Best New Artist” category after the jump.

Jay Supports Nas’ Use of N-Word

NasStreet disciple Nas ignited an Imus-tastic scale controversy a few weeks ago when he announced he’d be calling his forthcoming release, due out December 11, Nigger. After an initial denial, Nas’ record label announced their plan to fully support Nas’ contentious choice of an album title.

Now, the hip-hop heavyweight has received a benediction from none other than Jay-Z, the reigning king, who supports Nas’ decision, but not without some hesitancy. “I know he’s very intelligent and there’s a reason behind what he’s doing,” Jay told MTV News. “He’s not just doing it for the sake of being provocative. Of course we’re going to support his art. … I hope [the concept] is coming from a great place. I believe it’s coming from a great place. I just think it’s misguided. People give strength to words, power to words. If your remove ‘nigger,’ then you have ‘jiggaboo’ and ‘porch monkey,’ the words will keep continuing. How many words you gonna take out? People give the words power. I think we need to direct that [energy] towards the community.”

While compelling discourse, Jay’s support also marks the official hatchet-burying between the formal rivals. Most recently, Nas traded rhymes with Jay on “Success,” off Hovito’s brand new album American Gangster, out November 6.

50 Cent Gets Illmatic: “Nas Sucks”

NasLots of controversy still swirling around the title of Nas‘ forthcoming disc, Nigger. Some people, like Common, support the decision. “Nas is always bringing something new, something to talk about,” he recently told MTV News. Common cited previous agitprop artists like Gil Scott-Heron as forerunners to such political maneuvers. But 50 Cent weighed in with a comparatively blunt opinion. “Nas sucks,” he blasted. “That’s a stupid name…it’s for shock value.”

The CD comes out on 12/11. Have you absorbed its impact yet? What do you think about Nas’ title?

Nas Title: Off Again, “N” Again

nas_backagain.jpgRemember how earlier this week a supposed source at Def Jam shut down rumors that Nas‘ next album would be called Nigga and released in December? Now that’s been shut down. What a saga! Nas has confirmed to MTV News that he does have an album on the way (December 11, to be precise) and that it’s going to be given the potentially more offensive name of Nigger. Racial discourse, I hope you had a big meal because you’re about to get a workout. Nas elaborates on the criticism he’s received and reasons for the album title:

If [race expert] Cornell West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he’s got something intellectual to say. To think I’m gonna say something that’s not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary…I wanna make the word easy on muthaf***ers’ ears. You see how white boys ain’t mad at ‘cracker’ ’cause it don’t have the same [sting] as ‘nigger’? I want ‘nigger’ to have less meaning [than] ‘cracker.’ With all the bulls*** that’s going on in the world, racism is at its peak. I wanna do the s*** that’s not being done. I wanna be the artist who ain’t out. I wanna make the music I wanna hear.

Interestingly, his stance on using the word to take away its power falls right in line with that of Imus’ lawyer (as related in the FoxNews.com story that Nas is debunking: “Words like that should be deprived of their meanings, and then they can’t hurt.” Nas and Imus’ people: who knew they had so much in common? Nas: Censored Before He Could Talk?

nas_censored.jpg

After Nas‘ shocking announcement that his next album, purportedly due in December, would be titled Nigga, his record company has hit back, debunking his claims entirely. A source “close to” Def Jam honcho L.A. Reid told Fox News that there’s no new studio album due from Nas at all (though a greatest-hits set is to hit stores in November), and that even if there were, it probably wouldn’t carry such a potentially offensive title. “How would that look at Wal-Mart?” Terrible next to $5 leggings and this T-shirt, no doubt.

Of course, the very hypothesis that Nas would release an album named Nigga sent the usual suspects’ mouths foaming. Jesse Jackson denounced the title, calling it “socially distasteful,” while the NAACP said the name “shows a real lack of creative imagination.” Interestingly, support for the name came from none other than Don Imus‘ camp: Imus lawyer Martin Garbus called Nigga “a good thing.” “Words like that should be deprived of their meanings, and then they can’t hurt.” Clearly, Imus (or at least, his people) can’t wait to get back to work. Nas Drops ‘N’ Bomb On New CD

nas10151.jpgHip hop legend Nas is never one to shy away from a controversy, so it comes as no surprise that he’s announced that his next album will simply be called Nigga. The rapper spilled the beans at his NYC concert his past Friday and also revealed that he had wanted to use the title for his previous album, but instead went with Hip Hop is Dead. Why he changed the name is unclear, but one thing is certain: hip hop, and its artists’ ability to challenge cultural standards and stereotypes, is still very much alive. This move comes in the wake of the Don Imus basketball team scandal and Michael Richards‘ racist rant, which spurred a public dialogue about the power of language, varieties of racism, and of course the ubiquity of the infamous ‘N’ word itself (here’s how Ice T feels). New York City even went so far as to pass a symbolic resolution this year banning the word, in an attempt to eliminate the slur.

Whether or not you agree with Nas’ move, he is definitely sustaining the conversation about free speech and racism in America. So we gotta know - what do YOU think about the name of his new album?

Jones to Cam: “I Can’t Be Next to You”

070507_jimjones After his infamous anti-snitching interview on 60 Minutes, the world knows how ridiculously much loyalty means to Cam’ron. But do his closest friends even have the Dipset head honcho’s back?

Apparently not.

In an interview with Hot 97’s Miss Info, Dipset rapper Jim Jones (left) said that he hasn’t spoken with Cam’ron in a year and considers their friendship to be more of a burden than a blessing. "I’m through (with) being in hot water because of (Cam’ron)," Jones is quoted as saying on Miss Info’s blog. "I kept quiet out of loyalty … But now I can’t be next to you."
