Tired of living in Beyoncé’s shadow 364 days of the year, Solange Knowles went to extremes to make sure she owned the spotlight at her birthday bash. While she donned a loud, orange mini-dress, Beyoncé and mom Tina Knowles conservatively wore black wrap dresses. If the family dress code weren’t enough, Solange got the hottest DJ in town, Samantha Ronson, to work the event, posing with her and (rumored) girlfriend Lindsay Lohan. Hopefully Solange’s new single will allow her to taper the attention-grabbing antics. Ludacris, Ne-Yo, Cee-Lo, JoJo, Mario, and The Pussycat Dolls were also at the fete.

Mary J. Blige is going to have some help in Arizona this Thursday night. When the Pepsi Smash Superbowl Bash gets going, Ne-Yo is jumping onstage to help his pal Mary throw some funk around. You know that she was part of a remix of Ne-Yo’s “Do You” last year. But did you know that his favorite sandwich is a chicken and cheese thingee with mayo and mustard? And did you know that the first CD he bought was the Pharcyde’s Bizarre Ride to the Pharcyde? And did you know one of his earliest memories was watch his mom dance to Prince songs? No? You’d best get brought up to speed on our boy. Here’s a User’s Guide that will let the R&B star explain things himself.
Watch the Pepsi Smash show, which also features Maroon 5, live this Thursday night on VH1.com, and again this Saturday night on VH1 itself.

Janet Jackson’s career is about to get a face lift unlike any it has seen since she got her…face lift. The big news is that Janet’s next album, which she says should be out early next year, may not end up including any contributions from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the production gods that single-handedly turned her into a megastar by outfitting her with the robotic Minneapolis funk that defined her initial musical success. Starting with 1986’s Control, Jam and Lewis have been Janet’s key collaborators, contributing more to each album since than any other outside producer she enlisted. Together the three of them are R&B Voltron. Today, the robot sleeps.
Janet revealed the news during a press conference for her new film Why Did I Get Married?, when she revealed that Ne-Yo, Rodney Jerkins and (everyone groan all together) Jermaine Durpri are on her list of collaborators, but Jam and Lewis are not…at least for now.

In the movie "The Matrix," Neo saves the world from technology run amok.
In the R&B matrix, Ne-Yo is out to save Whitney Houston. From herself.
The superstar writa ternt sanga has been called in by none other than Clive Davis to rework Whitney’s upcoming comeback album, and according to Ne-Yo, he got there just in time.
"(All the songs) had the one same theme, which was ‘My name is Whitney Houston and this is my triumphant comeback,’" Ne-Yo told The Sun after hearing eight cuts off the record. "I’m sure we all get that (she’s suffered a lot) but I think she needs songs about regular everyday life. So that’s what I’m planning to add to the album — songs about everyday emotions."
Meanwhile, Ne-Yo’s own "everyday emotions" — not to mention those of his female co-stars — are on full display in the video for his sexed-up hit, "Because of You."

Rapper Tony Yayo and R&B star Ne-Yo’s careers are yo-yoing in two very different directions right now. Yayo turned himself in to New York police over the weekend after he allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old kid for wearing the wrong T-shirt. Although Yayo’s bud 50 Cent was reportedly with him at the time of the attack, 50’s lawyers claim he wasn’t in the state at the time.
Ne-Yo, meanwhile, is racking up the hits, not arrests. In an interesting interview with BallerStatus, the 24-year-old with the touch of gold talked about: being named after Keanu, his scary sessions with Jay-Z, and how Beyonce’s "Irreplaceable" could have just as easily wound up a country (!) song.
Would you mess with a kid because he was wearing the wrong T?

[Wait for It is our regular roundup of things to look forward to in pop culture. Everyone needs something to keep them going, you know?]
Music
Songwriter to the stars and a boldfaced name in his own right, Ne-Yo is set to release his sophomore album, Know Me, on April 24. The set will feature production from, well, people who know Ne-Yo: previous collaborators Stargate and Ron "NEFF-U" Feemstar are on board for another round of knob twirling. Recent Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is set to be the disc’s sole guest. Things are off to a good start for Know Me — the disco-inflected first single, "Because of You," manages to be both mournful and bouncy. Let’s see if Ne-Yo can keep the pace — he admits that he isn’t "100 percent" finished with the album. Hurry, Ne-Yo, make that release date! You haven’t disappointed us yet and now isn’t the time to start. [Billboard.com]
TV
It’s a match made in heaven for pop-culture cynics: Christopher Guest (director of Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and, most recently, For Your Consideration) has signed on to helm a comedy pilot created by Arrested Development mastermind Mitch Hurwitz. The Thick of It will be adapted from a British show of the same name that concerns a bumbling government worker and his staff. It’s being developed for ABC and written by Hurwitz and Development collaborator Richard Day. Guest hasn’t directed for TV since the early ’90s, but doesn’t even matter — Thick is about as sure a bet as the ‘08 Democratic ticket. [Zap2it]
