Rock on TV - The Shortlist

ash.jpgJonesing for music on your television set? You’ve come to the right place. Check out our shortlist. For more extensive listings, read VH1’s Rock on TV.

Awesome; I F**ckin’ Shot That!, 12:05 p.m. (EST), SHO2: Possibly the only official bootleg film in existence, this is what happens when one of the most innovative groups in rap give out 50 cameras during a stop on their 2004 tour at Madison Square Garden: fan-helmed madness ensues. The results range from passable concert video experience to motion-sickness inducing shakiness, but the sheer number of angles editor Adam Yauch
had to contend with rivalled the samples on Paul’s Boutique. Cameos from Money Mark, Dougie Fresh, Ben Stiller and David Cross pepper the film.

Undiscovered, 9:45 p.m.(EST), TMC: Let’s hope Pete Wentz doesn’t have basic cable. The younger Simpson sister stars in this utterly ground-breaking tale of struggling artists trying to make it on the streets of L.A., one of whom is Ash (she wears a little beret, that’s how you can tell she’s got it tough). There’s no drummer to blame this clunker of a performance on, Ash. Worth a viewing if only to get the taste of Glitter out of your mouth.

Rock on TV - The Shortlist

houseparty.jpgJonesing for music on your television set? Don’t know what to watch? Love to see your favorite musicians tied up in absurd plots? Well, then, you’ve come to the right place, rockers! Check out our shortlist below. For more extensive listings, read VH1’s Rock on TV schedule daily.

House Party, 8:15 p.m. (EST), Cinemax: Before versions 2, 3 and, unbelievably, 4, there was this 1990 classic. More musical than movie, it starred Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin (aka Kid ‘N Play) in a story about high hair, neon pajamas and what happens when your dad grounds you just as you’re about to hook up some hot teenage action. The culture was innocent once, and young!

Charlie Rose with the Beastie Boys, 11 p.m. (EST) PBS: The three bad boys that you know so well keep Charlie company tonight. Will they talk about their new instrumental album? Will they wax eloquent about international politics? Will they announce plans to scuttle their hip-hop ambitions and live on a self-sustaining commune? One thing’s for sure: Charlie will be the equal of it. Has he ever been fazed by anything?

Can Rock ‘n’ Roll Green the Globe?

Akon There’s some question as to the level of impact that tomorrow’s Live Earth shows are going to have on the cause at hand: saving energy. Here a pro and con story where Al Gore says this is the first step in a three to five year campaign to make citizens aware of global warming’s dangers.

In other Live Earth news, a Washington, DC venue has been added to tomorrow’s concerts, and a Brazilian judge says the Rio gig can take place after all.

What we’re interested in is your opinion. The Austrailian performances start tonight. Absorb all the action through the evening, and come here tomorrow at 1 pm EST to chime in on which artist was most impressive. Akon, John Mayer, the Beasties, the Police - who’s going to rock the house? We’ll be live blogging the action through the afternoon. Hang out with us.

Beasties Bust Beyonce (Kinda)

Beasties_2

The Beastie Boys have been teasing girls since Licensed to Ill dropped in ‘86. But they’ve grown up a little bit. To show how mature they are these days, they’ve allegedly scrapped their plans to reference the love of Jay-Z’s life in the title of their forthcoming instrumental CD. So no, the trio’s next album won’t be called Thick, Like Beyonce’s Leg.

In fact there’s damn good chance that the album is called The Mix-Up. But don’t rule out the idea that it could be Sweet, Like J. Lo’s Rump, Phat, LIke Diddy’s Wallet, or Insane, LIke Phil Spector’s Old Hair.

Wait for It - Fountains of Wayne, Boys of Beastie, Actors of Woody

[Wait for It is our regular roundup of things to look forward to in
pop culture. Whatever gets you through the week…
]

Music

Fow_waitWhen you write a psych-pop ditty called "Revolving Dora" about a dervish chick ("there’s something blurry about that girl, oh yeahhhh") you deserve a high-five for wit. Cue applause, then: Fountains of Wayne return to action on April 3 with the rather remarkable Traffic and Weather. After a weekend’s-worth of in-home spinning (or is that revolving?) I’m here to say it sounds great. You know how catchy their stuff is. You know how poignant their barbs can be. Yep, they’ve got it going on again. Heads up to hackysack fiends; one tune’s called "Planet of Weed."

– Jim Macnie

Beastie_wait
Graying rappers the Beastie Boys are putting the final touches on their upcoming album. Nothing is known about the release aside from Adam Yauch’s suggestion that it may be out this summer (to coincide with a smattering of concert dates the Beasties have set). It’s hard to predict how this record’s sound will go, without even so much as a title at this point. Might we suggest Hip-Hop’s Not Dead, It’s Just Kind of Tired Because Now It Has Kids To Feed? [Billboard.com]

Movies

Penelope_waitWoody Allen soon may be spicing things up. Javier Bardem (Collateral, Before Night Falls) told reporters Monday that he and Penelope Cruz are set to appear in a Woody flick that’s set to film this summer in Barcelona. Penelope has the most to gain: if this is good, it can continue the career upswing she’s experiencing, thanks to Volver. But who knows what this project will even be about? Again, we don’t have so much as a title. Might we suggest Anything Else But Another Unfunny Dramedy About White People? [AP/washingtonpost.com]
