Christina Perri Sets Twi-Hard Hearts Aflutter With Her Video For “A Thousand Years”

We’re less than a month away from the highly anticipated premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and the talented musicians who appear on the Breaking Dawn soundtrack have been keeping us company all month long as part of our ongoing Posted series. Tonight, we’re super excited to premiere the video for Christina Perri‘s “A Thousand Years”which is chock full of footage that Twi-Hards are going to be obsessing over until the film’s November 18th debut.

Perri, who we introduced to you as one of our You Oughta Know artists one year ago this month, delivers romantic lines like “I have loved you for a thousand years, I’ll love you for a thousand more” and “All along, I believed I would find you/Time has brought your heart to me” with the kind of emotional resonance that will have those who have long been obsessing about seeing Edward and Bella’s wedding finally come to life on the silver screen reaching for their hankies. In fact, it’s the kind of soaring ballad that one could easily imagine high school seniors all over the country voting as their Prom Theme come next May. That is, unless you’re on Team Jacob, in which case you’ll probably just have to make do with this awful reimagining of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as “Bella.”

Bruno Mars Premieres “It Will Rain” From Breaking Dawn: Part 1 Soundtrack

Soundtracks may not be the music blockbusters they once were (think the nine-times-platinum Top Gun soundtrack), but in some cases, they can still pack a punch—not only in terms of sales, but also in terms of singles and other original songs. One of the few holdovers is the much-loved (particularly over at The Fab Life) Twilight Saga, and last night the first single from the Breaking Dawn: Part 1 soundtrack, Bruno Mars‘s “It Will Rain,” hit YouTube and iTunes, following the announcement earlier in the day of the full tracklisting. His string-laden heartbreak ballad is perfectly suited for the series’s melodrama

Mars isn’t the only You Oughta Know alum making an appearance—Twilight Saga superfan Christina Perri contributed a song, a fact she excitedly blogged about yesterday (under the title “My Dream Came True!”). The two artists are among the notable inclusions on the tracklisting (which we’ve reprinted after the jump).

We may not have been able to attend Lollapalooza 2011 ourselves, but the photographers we sent in our stead got some great shots. Tuned In: tUnE-yArDs Gives Christina Perri A Run For Her Money (With Help From The Roots)

We’re not sure how to explain the glut of great performances on television last night, but we’re certainly not complaining. We actually recommend checking them all out (links below the cut), but we couldn’t even pick just one highlight. To be sure, when The Late Show with David Letterman wrapped up, we thought we had just seen the best of the night. Christina Perri, fresh off a tour with James Blunt (and clearly much more confident as a showperson) turned in an impressive performance of her Top 20 Countdown contender and #24 most-streamed-of-2011 single “Arms.” Why, you might wonder, were we so impressed by a three-month-old single on Letterman? Quite frankly, because her touring experience has stepped her performance game up by an order of magnitude. Before her serendipitous Dancing with the Stars breakthrough, her storied performance history was almost exclusively solo guitar-and-vocal shows, but the Perri who performed on television late night was a pianist and a bandleader, with a rhythm section in the pocket, and able to add a jaunty lilt to her love ballad (getting the audience to clap along, even) without modifying the song’s tempo. (We’re a sucker for tone shifts, because they suggest a wider range and further depths of talent.)

There wasn’t a dud in the entire night’s lineup of musical performances (though the Jimmy Kimmel Live! booker really gave the talented ukelele player Jake Shimabukuro a tough break by scheduling him opposite a whole slate of much better-known artists, and on Kimmel‘s first show since Lady Gaga‘s appearance last Thursday). Even still, Perri’s performance set the bar for the evening. Then tUnE-yArDs appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and, dare we say, raised it.

We’re not exactly surprised that tUnE-yArDs impressed the Fallon crowd with “Gangsta,” because the band’s live show has impressed us—not to mention the crowd at this year’s Pitchfork Musical Festival—in the past. To match a nuanced performance by a You Oughta Know artist who’s clearly only gotten better, though, tUnE-yArDs needed to do more than just sound good on television. So how about getting ?uestlove‘s help to turn the instrumental break in “Gangsta” into a free-jazzy hip-hop beat for Black Thought, also of The Roots, to rap over? That’s enough for us to keep it in the running!

May’s VH1 Posted artist Christina Perri is still in a whirlwind of promotion for lovestrong., but that hasn’t stopped her from sending us plenty of behind-the-scenes and on-the-road photo updates (and visiting our offices last week). Christina Perri Weighs In On What She Thinks Will Be This Summer’s Biggest Jams

You Oughta Know artist Christina Perri stopped by our offices here at 1515 Broadway in the heart of New York City on Wednesday for a guest appearance on VH1′s Big Morning Buzz Live. We’ve been fortunate enough to have spent a lot of time with Christina over the last year and some change, ranging from her awesome Live At VH1 performance last October to the frequent missives she’s been shooting our way as this month’s Posted artist. This time around, though, we grabbed a few minutes with her to ask her about her humble, pre-SYTYCD beginnings, what she learned by going on tour with James Blunt, and what songs she thinks are going to be this summer’s monster jams. Strong Debuts Are No Match For Adele’s Sales

The Lonely Island‘s Turtleneck and Chain came closest, at #3, but none of this past week’s album releases posed a real challenge to the continued chart dominance of Adele. Her 21 is #1 for the eighth of its twelve weeks on the chart, thanks in part to the continued success of “Rolling in the Deep,” which itself finally hit #1 on the Hot 100 last week after 17 weeks climbing the chart. Not even Lady Gaga‘s “Edge of Glory” (in at #2) could topple it this week. In its second chart week, Now 38 also outsold Turtleneck and Chain. Christina Perri‘s and Tyler, the Creator‘s debut LPs round out the top five.

Aside from the one-two punch of Adele and Lady Gaga, the top of the singles chart is mostly full of songs that have peaked but remain popular (excepting Pitbull‘s “Give Me Everything” and the Black Eyed Peas‘ “Just Can’t Get Enough”). And the two women are likely to continue to battle for the top of the chart, especially once Born This Way is released. So the bump in digital sales that has temporarily boosted the industry is largely due to the success of female artists, as Chris Molanphy explained last week for the Village Voice‘s Sound of the City blog.
