Coldplay‘s Mylo Xyloto sold 447,000 copies in the United States last week, which puts it squarely atop this week’s Billboard album charts. The British foursome was able to top future VH1 Unplugged star Kelly Clarkson‘s release of Stronger, which moved an impressive 163,000 units. Coldplay’s sales figures look even more impressive when you consider that this is the strongest first week sales total for a rock act since U2 released No Line On The Horizon back in March of 2009.

VH1 News correspondent Kate Spencer was able to grab some quality face time with Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin and drummer Will Champion in Los Angeles recently, a revealing interview in which these gents discuss a variety of topics ranging from how they chose the producers of Mylo Xyloto to why the Haters always keep them striving to achieve more.

With Coldplay‘s cover of Rihanna‘s “We Found Love” currently going viral online, we’ve taken the spirit of the song to heart and revisited our favorite covers of RiRi’s songs. And yes, we’ve found love in hopeless places, falling head over heels for renditions of songs we didn’t think we could possibly love coming from anyone’s mouth but hers.

COLDPLAY – “We Found Love”
Coldplay covered Rihanna’s latest release “We Found Love” for BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge series and we’re afraid to say this but… it might just be as good, or better than, the original! Earning Coldplay some serious points in the wake of their new album Mylo Xyloto‘s growing momentum, the cover replaces the Calvin Harris club banging beats with a more chilled out vibe. As such, the sentiment in Coldplay’s version is far more pervasive than in RiRi’s self-conscious original, in which the accompanying adds elements of superficiality to (what Coldplay has proved to be) the wonderful lyricism of the track.

In the midst of a flashing neon light show, LA band and VH1 You Oughta Know artist Foster The People took to the stage for Letterman last night to perform their hit song “Helena Beat”. Electro-pop meets rock’n'roll, Foster The People are the kind of band that you can’t help but dance for, and even as we watched Letterman from the comfort of our homes last night, we couldn’t help but tap our toes and give a little shoulder shake. An uplifting club tune, “Helena Beat” is the perfect way to get yourself in the mood to face your day with energy, smiles and lots of dance-walking.

Coldplay visited The Colbert Report yesterday before returning to the UK before their album release next week. After Chris Martin subjected himself to a one-on-one interview, in which he claimed that Thom Yorke’s wriggling performance on a previous episode was actually the Radiohead frontman’s mastery of a style of dance taught in all British schools, the band performed their new single “Paradise,” though not in costume as elephants. Only one song aired during last night’s half-hour episode (as Martin quipped of Coldplay, in comparison to Radiohead, whose episode extended to a full hour, “We’re not as good musically, but we’re much more attractive”) but the band did perform another track from Mylo Xyloto“Up In Flames”—as a web exclusive.

In Coldplay’s new video for “Paradise,” Chris Martin escapes imprisonment in Britain, busks for a bit, then stows away on a flight to South Africa, and rides a unicycle out into the country to reunite with his bandmates for an outdoor jam followed by a stadium show. Oh, also, he’s dressed in a giant elephant costume.

Happy Birthday, Leonard Cohen!
Leonard Cohen turns 77 today. To celebrate, read Mike Barthel‘s chronicle of Cohen’s song “Hallelujah” and how it became a television-montage staple, or listen to “Suzanne” or “Everybody Knows,” or pre-order the Complete Leonard Cohen box set that’s on the way. [Pitchfork]

Wilco, Coldplay Live on Letterman
This morning we mentioned that Coldplay had appeared on The Late Show to perform “Paradise.” They also recorded a full concert for Live on Letterman that streamed last night and is now available on demand. Tonight at 8PM ET, Wilco (featuring a newly jolly Jeff Tweedy) will do the same. [Live on Letterman]

Coldplay may have revealed the tracklisting and cover art for the forthcoming Brian Eno-produced Mylo Xyloto on Friday afternoon, but that hardly means they’re not savvy to the news cycle. This morning they premiered the album’s second single, “Paradise,” on BBC1 (and then YouTube), and revealed that the track “Princess of China” would feature vocals from Rihanna. That’s how you promote an album.

As for the single itself, it’s another big-sounding Coldplay track, though unlike “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall,” which this song’s lyrics reference, there’s no sample here—unless you count the break in the intro, seemingly ready-made for rap freestyles. The somewhat trance-y sound of the first single is here integrated into Coldplay’s historical sound, so it sounds more like a natural progression of their music than the product of a really great Ibiza trip Chris Martin took.

The deluge of Coldplay news also includes details about the “Pop-Up Album” version of Mylo Xyloto, which includes not only the album on CD, vinyl, and mp3 download, but also a 64 page 12″ x 12″ hardcover “containing graffiti pop-up art” along the lines of the album’s art, designed by David A. Carter. What we’re really curious about, though, is the “selection of stickers and stencils,” because our Lisa Frank love has never waned. But we’ll have to wait—though Mylo Xyloto is available on October 25, the pop-up version won’t be available until mid-December.

September 11: How Music Responded
Long Read of the Day: We wrote earlier today about the music that people listened to after the events of September 11 occurred, but before they had any effect on recordings. Over at MTV Hive, five pieces explore what those effects turned out to be for pop, country, indie rock, rap, and dance. [MTV Hive]

Sad to say, but the impending arrival of Labor Day weekend means it’s time to put another summer in the books. All summer long, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the race to determine this year’s Song Of The Summer, following how songs have performed in terms of the Billboard Hot 100, iTunes sales, Last.fm scrobbles, YouTube streams and, of course, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown.

We’re going to announce this summer’s winner here on the VH1 Blog on Tuesday, but before we do that, we’d love to find out what YOU, the VH1 audience, felt was this year’s Song Of The Summer. What song did you jam the most on the beach? Which track was blasting when you put your ragtop down so your hair can blow? What jam got you and your friends pumped up for a night out on the town? Vote as many times as you like in our poll below. (Oh, and congrats to You Oughta Know artist Foster The People for being only the third song all summer long to hold the top spot in our countdown with their zeitgeisty smash, “Pumped Up Kicks”!)

At this time last year, hopes for Maroon 5‘s third studio album, Hands All Over, were high. The lead single, “Misery,” had hit #1 on Billboard‘s Adult Pop chart, and since the band had convinced famed superproducer Robert “Mutt” Lange to come out of semi-retirement to produce their album, everyone looked for the band to take the leap from a well-liked, fairly popular M.O.R. band to the next level and a spot among the world’s most commercially successful bands. However, once the album finally hit streets in October 2010, the masses shrugged their shoulders and largely ignored the album. The record was certified gold by the RIAA for shipping over 500,000 copies, but worldwide sales stalled out at just 529,000 total units.

Perceived failures like this have sunk many a band in the past, but thanks to charismatic frontman Adam Levine and ten weeks of national TV exposure courtesy of NBC/Universal’s The Voice (corporate synergy at its finest!), the band has totally reversed their fortunes in less than a year. Their new track, “Moves Like Jagger,” hit #1 on the iTunes chart this week, and Levine’s featured hook on Gym Class Heroes“Stereo Hearts” propelled the song to a Top 20 finish in this week’s Song Of The Summer countdown. No wonder artists like Mariah Carey (The X-Factor), Sara Bareilles (The Sing Off) and more are looking to land prime positions as judges on televised singing competition shows; it’s exactly the kind of exposure to Middle America that the flagging music business is no longer in a position to give these artists using “traditional” music channels. As Maroon 5 has proved, it’s great work if you can get it!

As for the rest of our Song Of The Summer chart —only two more weeks until we crown a champion!— kudos to Katy Perry for her ninth consecutive week in the #1 spot.
