Miley Cyrus has been catching some flak for her cover of Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Friday night in Ecuador. But the criticisms aren’t really about her rendition—which was not great, but not terrible, and let’s remember that the audio quality is pretty low—but about the difference between what “Smells Like Teen Spirit” means to Miley Cyrus and what it means to those who were alive when the song was recorded. Miley has said that Kurt Cobain is her “dream boyfriend” but there’s no indication that she sees much of a difference between him and, say, Bret Michaels, with whom she recorded an unreleased rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”

And so what? News flash, Generation X: Kurt Cobain isn’t ours anymore. He entered the pop imagination almost twenty years ago. Learn to share. (At the same time, that doesn’t mean you have to like the covers.)

In that spirit, here are the ten most notable reimaginings of the classic Nirvana single, in chronological order. Classic? Misguided? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Are children ages 5-12 desperate to be introduced to hair-metal ballads that are decades older than they are? Kidz Bop, the now-venerable series of age-appropriate kid-chorus cover compilations, hopes so: May 17 will see the release of Kidz Bop Sings Monster Ballads. Life As I Know It‘s own Bret Michaels and his daughters Raine and Jorja have recorded what will likely be the jewel of this volume: a re-recording of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” which Michaels originally sang with Poison in 1988, and which was previously anthologized on Monster Ballads: Platinum Edition. This time around, his daughters take the lead, with Bret on guitar. [click to continue…]

Stevie Wonder sure can class up a joint. As the only man allowed on the VH1 Divas stage last night, Wonder complemented the gorgeous Jennifer Hudson during their duet of “All In Love Is Fair.” This is one of our favorite duets of the night and cemented Hudson’s status as a diva and a legend in the making — not everyone can hold their own with Stevie and she proved herself more than capable. The soulful song played out in stark contrast to some of the other duets, like the Sheryl Crow-Miley Cyrus performance. We think it was the benchmark for elegance last night.

Update: VH1 Divas 2010 has just been announced with performances by Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Sugarland and others. Kathy Griffin to host. Get all the details at VH1 Divas Salute the Troops.

“An amazingly talented group of young women have successfully launched themselves into the global music scene since our last VH1 Divas show. We’re very excited to have so many of them join us at this year’s momentous event,” said Lee Rolontz, EVP, Original Music Production & Development VH1, and VH1 Classic. “Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world’s attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don’t let some of their young age’s fool you – these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come.”

Premiering on VH1 in 1998, VH1 Divas became synonymous with some of the most memorable live female vocal performances in television history. The show quickly became a highly anticipated annual phenomenon, generating speculation among music fans and industry executives on who would be part of that year’s telecast. Previous featured performers over the years included Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Cher, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Chaka Khan and many more.

VH1 Divas is executive produced by Lee Rolontz, Rick Krim and Patrizia DiMaria.

As in previous years, VH1 Divas specials raise funds for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in American public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education. Since VH1 Save The Music was created in 1997, more than $43 million worth of musical instruments have been donated to 1,600 public schools in 100 cities, improving the lives of more than 1.2 million children.

Some stars are born, some stars are made. Those in the latter category probably worked for Disney. No other entertainment conglomerate has an equal knack for nursing young talent until they ripen into mega-selling cash cows. With Miley Cyrus in mags, TV and radio these days, we thought it was time to catch up with the most prominent grads of Disney U. See who made the list, which stretches from Britney to The Jonas Brothers.

Miley Bares All (Again)

Miley Cyrus opened up her heart about opening up her shirt for her controversial Vanity Fair cover shoot. The pop star told “Good Morning America,” “I think I was just in a stage where I was just trying to get things done, and maybe look for an older audience. I was working with a big magazine just trying to go with what they were saying.”

Miley described the ensuing scandal as a “hard time,” and said she now “knows what it’s like to have people talk about you like you’re kind of iron.”

Other photos Miley failed to address were her neon green bra shots, camera phone shower shots and the “racy” photos she took with a girlfriend.

Miley is only 15, but she already has some new up-and-coming pop-tart Miley protégés. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have sometimes been called “the next Miley Cyruses,” but Miley said, “People are looking up to what I do. But, I don’t think there could be a next Miley. I think they should be the next Selena, Demi. Make their own way.” …and be careful with camera phones!

15-year old Miley Cyrus is finally breaking her silence about that infamous Vanity Fair pic of her wrapped topless in a sheet. You know the one. She had previously said she was “embarassed” by the pics, but now she seems to be seeing the upside of such a scandal.

“I was embarrassed, but also it’s like, every career thing that I do can’t be perfect, and sometimes my decisions are wrong. I think that just makes me even more relatable.”

She is right – everyone can relate to doing stupid sh*t in high school. The difference is we didn’t have a bedroom full of Benjamins to come home to and cry in at night. Stars: they’re still not like us, no matter how many regretful topless photos they take! [MSNBC]
