The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards are back! Well, almost. The 17th annual awards ceremony will air on VH1 for the fifth year in a row on January 12, 2012, and the evening promises to be packed with entertainment. Yes, there will be A-listers and acting awards to hand out, but this show goes above and beyond your typical awards show accolades. The evening’s hosts will be comedians (and personal favorites) Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel and the house band duties go to VH1 You Oughtta Know artists Fitz And The Tantrums. For more info on this evening of entertainment, read on.

Fitz And The Tantrums are putting in WORK to get the word out about their fantastic debut LP, Picking Up The Pieces. Since being named our You Oughta Know artist back in April, the funky soul revivalists have been touring relentlessly, earning kudos from industry insiders like Bob Lefsetz and winning scads of new fans at festivals like Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. We have no idea when they found themselves with enough time to shoot another music video, but lo and behold, we just got our mitts on the brand new “Don’t Gotta Work It Out” video.

The video begins with a curious homage to Pulp Fiction (or maybe Repo Man?), as lead singer Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick stumbles onto a briefcase of indeterminate origins and opens it up, resulting in him being bathed in golden light. He then proceeds to walk/jog through a series of urban alleyways in search of vocalist Noelle Scaggs and the rest of the Tantrums, while lens flares invade the frame at a clip that would make even J.J. Abrams blush. Along the way, a slew of feathers begin floating down through the atmosphere, which makes us think that either Sully Sullenberg was in the vicinity exacting more revenge on the geese population or there was an explosion at a nearby down pillow factory. Just when we think we might have an idea where this video might be going, Fitz falls to his knees in an alleyway and gets drenched by a raincloud that only has eyes for him.

So, what does it all mean? Well, even after watching it a few times, we’d be hard pressed to explain the video treatment, but we are certain of one thing: This song is totally boss.

Labor Day may have come and gone, but the equinox isn’t until September 23, so this weekend Austin City Limits will just squeak by with the last festival of the summer. Normally before big festival weekends we try to narrow down the best option when multiple must-see bands play at the same time on different stages, but the ACL 2011 schedule is pretty well-spaced, besides which we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the big names based on their performances at other festivals this summer (like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza). In short: be sure not to miss Arcade Fire, closing out Sunday night, and be sure to see at least one of the two headliners on Friday (Coldplay and Kanye West) and Saturday (Stevie Wonder and My Morning Jacket). All five sets promise to be thrilling. But let’s talk about some other acts that can’t be missed.

1. Foster The People (Friday, 5:30-6:30PM)
We’ve already said plenty about these You Oughta Know alums whose “Pumped Up Kicks” was a dark-horse Song of the Summer, but if we had to distill our reasoning for naming them “must-see” to one mention, it would be their enthralling Lollapalooza performance. This is what this band does to a festival crowd. Be a part of it.

If you attended the 2011 Lollapalooza Festival this weekend, you had to battle the elements AND a throng of 270,000 people in order to see your favorite acts. However, on Friday night at the W Hotel in Chicago, some of our most famous You Oughta Know alumni gathered for a very special VH1 You Oughta Know Night at the Belve Music Lounge. Retro soul powerhouses Fitz And The Tantrums and electro power poppers Two Door Cinema Club each performed for the fans lucky enough to score an invite (which included celebs like Twilight’s Kellan Lutz, Christopher “McLovin” Mintz-Plasse), and the one and only Grace Potter hopped on the ones and twos for an inspired DJ set. Our photogs were on hand to catch all the action, and we’d love to share the results with you!

Tens of thousands of music fans are, as we type, passing through Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports on a pilgramage to Grant Park for Lollapalooza 2011. After a torrid month of July in the Windy City, the weather forecast is calling for sunny temperatures in the low eighties for most of the weekend, which is perfect festival-going weather; there is a chance of isolated thunderstorms on Sunday, though. Still, what’s a little rain when you have over 150 of the world’s best bands and DJs all gathered within 1.2 square kilometers of each other?

As we have explained for you in the past at Coachella and Bonnaroo, festival-going is all about making tough decisions. At any given time this weekend, upwards of six acts will be performing simultaneously, and some of these overlaps are bound to involve bands that you care about equally. Sadly, because of the sheer size of the park (319 acres, yo) and the amount of people on the grounds, waffling on your decisions could lead you to missing both acts. So, in the interest of being as service-y as possible, we’re putting the spotlight on five of these potential conflicts and arming you with as much information as possible to help you make an educated decision.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5

Foster The People (3-4 p.m.) OR Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (2:30-3:30 p.m.)?
Right at the time when most people will first be entering the festival grounds for the weekend comes our first tough decision as two of our You Oughta Know alums are going head-to-head. Foster The People have the #1 alternative song on the Billboard charts at the moment (“Pumped Up Kicks”), while Grace Potter and her Nocturnals are seasoned festival performers who lean on heavy riffs (and Potter’s famously long legs). This is a toughie, but based on their highly buzzed about “breakthrough performance” at Coachella this past April, we’re going to suggest you check out Mark Foster and his People as they perform to what will surely be their largest audience to date.

Coldplay OR Muse (8:15-10 p.m.)?

You Oughta Know artist Fitz and the Tantrums‘ music could be described just like its fashion — Motown roots with a pop twist. Frontman Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick embraces this fusion by pairing skinny suits a la the 1960s with new sneakers and a hairdo reminiscent of New Wave. The rest of the six-piece Tantrums, mostly guys who make up the group’s tight horn section, share Fitz’ penchant for sporting skinny suits on stage. And the group’s lone gal, knockout co-singer Noelle Scaggs, favors vintage dresses and a retro bob. For our inaugural Music Seen feature, VH1 photographer Zev Schmitz spent time with the Fitz and the Tantrums as they dropped by VH1 to perform a You Oughta Know Live set in our lobby. After the jump, photos and commentary by the band members themselves. — Matt Muro

As we teased not quite two weeks ago, You Oughta Know artist Fitz and the Tantrums swung by the VH1 offices for an exclusive You Oughta Know Live performance. The four-song set was a blast, but the absolute highlight was the double-time clapping and funky breakdown of “L.O.V.” which we’ve shared above.

Stream the whole set, including the band’s most recent single “MoneyGrabber”, exclusively via VH1.com.
