Foster The People‘s new video for “Call It What You Want” is the most lavish of their young career. Since their humble beginnings with “Pumped Up Kicks,” Foster The People have been featured as a You Oughta Know artist, and now are on the fast track to superstardom with their quirky brand of infectious electro-pop. We’ve been bopping our shoulders all morning at our desks as we listen to the new single, so one thing’s for sure — we absolutely love “Call It What You Want.”

The video, on the other hand, is a little bit more interesting and requires more than just a toe tap to decipher. Set in a lavish mansion akin to the Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, the video also has a decided Gossip Girl vibe, what with all the gilded, ornamental decadence and the striking resemblance of front man Mark Foster to Chace Crawford. Add some hallucinogens and the video descends quickly into madness while the band experiments with all manner of wet, exploding and popping things, while ignoring the scantily-clad female fans screaming beneath their balcony.

And not only are the fans ignored, they’re shot at with Mark Foster’s finger gun, exploding blue paint from their chests in a gruesomely vibrant simulation. We can’t decide if it’s a thinly veiled metaphor — Foster The People’s priority is to experiment and create rather than to lavish in fame — or if it’s just a super fun, tongue-in-cheek kitschy kind of video. Either way, we hope the fish flopping on the floor towards the start of the video made it back into its tank alive…

In the midst of a flashing neon light show, LA band and VH1 You Oughta Know artist Foster The People took to the stage for Letterman last night to perform their hit song “Helena Beat”. Electro-pop meets rock’n'roll, Foster The People are the kind of band that you can’t help but dance for, and even as we watched Letterman from the comfort of our homes last night, we couldn’t help but tap our toes and give a little shoulder shake. An uplifting club tune, “Helena Beat” is the perfect way to get yourself in the mood to face your day with energy, smiles and lots of dance-walking.

Foster The People continued their banner year with an appearance on Saturday Night Live, where they performed (what else?) “Pumped Up Kicks.” But for their second song of the night they welcomed a surprising guest—Kenny G, who has officially gotten more notice at VH1 this year, between this performance and his appearance in Katy Perry’s Song Of The Summer video “Last Friday Night,” than any since VH1 was born in 1985. The controversial smooth-jazz titan added a soprano-sax solo to “Houdini.”

The collaboration was not as out-of-left-field as it may have seemed; the band has talked on multiple occasions about collaborating with the saxophonist (who also appeared in an Audi ad this year as a “riot suppressor”). The tipping point may have been a short interview with MTV Hive, during which a reiteration of what seemed like a running joke became a reflection on Kenny G’s talents. “I watched that guy hold a note for like ten minutes,” Mark Foster quipped, exaggerating but not entirely joking. Finally, on Saturday, the moment arrived. For a somewhat different (albeit Kenny G-free) take on “Houdini,” check the band’s You Oughta Know Live performance of the track after the jump.

You Oughta Know alums Foster The People will have another feather in their cap on October 8 when they appear on that night’s episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Ben Stiller. We doubt they will get quite the camp-out that the season premiere got, but considering the reception they’ve gotten at festivals all summer, who knows? NBC announced the booking yesterday, also confirming that the following week’s episode would be hosted by Anna Faris and feature music from Drake. We wonder whether Young Money’s sometime actor will make any sketch appearances. He doesn’t exactly seem the type, but then again, neither did Lady Gaga. Good luck to October’s Very Own and especially to Mark Foster and co.!

It’s been an immense joy to watch the rise of Foster The People over the last few months. Since we added them our roster of You Oughta Know artists back in June, the band has exploded in popularity and become arguably the most popular debut artist of the year 2011. The guys were cool enough to let us tail them for a day at the Austin City Limits Festival last weekend, and we’re psyched to share with you the video and photgraphic evidence from our encounter with the current #1 artist on Spotify.

Earlier this week, we shared a handful of snaps with you that our own Julie Ruiz took last weekend at the Austin City Limits Festival, deep in the heart of Texas. Well, we just got a look at some of the black-and-white outtakes of artists like Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Sara Bareilles and couldn’t resist the urge to share them with you.

Autumn weather may be in full swing, but this weekend, 70,000 music fans flocked to the musical (and actual) capitol of Texas for one last burst of summer: the 2011 Austin City Limits Festival. Over a hundred artists played on one of the festival’s eight stages, and VH1 photographer Julie Ruiz was on site, following the sounds and snapping pictures of Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, and seventeen others—including three of the can’t-miss sets we recommended. Before this weekend, we thought we were all festival-ed out, but looking at this gallery gives us all-too-fresh pangs of jealousy.

Labor Day may have come and gone, but the equinox isn’t until September 23, so this weekend Austin City Limits will just squeak by with the last festival of the summer. Normally before big festival weekends we try to narrow down the best option when multiple must-see bands play at the same time on different stages, but the ACL 2011 schedule is pretty well-spaced, besides which we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the big names based on their performances at other festivals this summer (like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza). In short: be sure not to miss Arcade Fire, closing out Sunday night, and be sure to see at least one of the two headliners on Friday (Coldplay and Kanye West) and Saturday (Stevie Wonder and My Morning Jacket). All five sets promise to be thrilling. But let’s talk about some other acts that can’t be missed.

1. Foster The People (Friday, 5:30-6:30PM)
We’ve already said plenty about these You Oughta Know alums whose “Pumped Up Kicks” was a dark-horse Song of the Summer, but if we had to distill our reasoning for naming them “must-see” to one mention, it would be their enthralling Lollapalooza performance. This is what this band does to a festival crowd. Be a part of it.

For the last 14 weeks, we’ve been tracking the race to see which track would become this year’s Song Of The Summer. Since people consume music in so many different ways these days, our goal was to put together a democratic formula that compared how a group of over 70 songs performed across five of the primary channels that people frequently use to listen to their favorite jams: the Billboard Hot 100 (radio play & sales), the iTunes charts (pure sales), Last.fm scrobbles (listening on computer and mobile devices), the YouTube music charts (streams) and, of course, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. Each week, we tracked how our group of competitors fared in each of these different platforms, and then added up the results.

So, without any further ado, we are psyched to announce that Katy Perry has taken home the first place prize in VH1′s first annual Song Of The Summer competition! When the summer began, it looked like Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep” was going to be an unstoppable force, but as soon as Katy dropped her 80s-tastic “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” video during the week of June 27th, she dominated the countdown from there on out. Katy was gracious enough to film an quick speech for us while she accepted our totally awesome Song Of The Summer trophy, which we’ve got for you above.

For you completists, here is our final Song Of The Summer countdown chart (that is, until Memorial Day 2012 rolls around!). And you’re on Spotify, you can subscribe to our VH1 Song Of The Summer 2011 playlist and re-live the summer whenever you want.

Sad to say, but the impending arrival of Labor Day weekend means it’s time to put another summer in the books. All summer long, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the race to determine this year’s Song Of The Summer, following how songs have performed in terms of the Billboard Hot 100, iTunes sales, Last.fm scrobbles, YouTube streams and, of course, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown.

We’re going to announce this summer’s winner here on the VH1 Blog on Tuesday, but before we do that, we’d love to find out what YOU, the VH1 audience, felt was this year’s Song Of The Summer. What song did you jam the most on the beach? Which track was blasting when you put your ragtop down so your hair can blow? What jam got you and your friends pumped up for a night out on the town? Vote as many times as you like in our poll below. (Oh, and congrats to You Oughta Know artist Foster The People for being only the third song all summer long to hold the top spot in our countdown with their zeitgeisty smash, “Pumped Up Kicks”!)
