It all started with some ratty extensions…

…and it only got worse from there. Is this the VMAs or a Rob Zombie movie?

Still too hard to tell.
Britney’s trainwreck more or less set the tone for the rest of last night’s show, which was supposed to be a new-and-improved version of the Video Music Awards. Mostly, it just felt schizophrenic, with its performers scattered through a series of “parties” at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. Though less ceremonious in general (gone away, for the most part, were performer introductions, thankfully) and about as short as you could possibly expect an awards show to be (just over two hours, double thankfully), this year’s VMAs was a series of quick cuts and excerpted performances. It felt like a parody of MTV and the short-attention-span generation the network supposedly spawned. The awards show is what would happen if ADHD got ADHD. (And what’s worse — they gypped us out of what was undoubtedly the best part of the night: the Kid Rock-Tommy Lee tussle.)
After the jump, we recount some highlights. And by “highlights,” more times than not, we mean “lowlights.”

Wow. This is a show that got off the ground real quick. So far we’ve seen energetic romps by the ever-dapper Duran Duran, a poignant man + guitar set by James Morrison, some Lily Allen bounce and Fergie footwork, and a big blast of power pop by our You Oughta Know band, the Feeling. "The sun is shining on Wembley today," they announced before launching into one of their power pop gems. Now Pharrell is kicking it (with a little dirty talk).
No surprise that the impact of American Idol stretches "over the pond." Simon LeBon isn’t the only Simon at the show. Mr. Cowell (with Randy and Ryan teasing him along) had some fun introducing Nelly Furtado - who was pretty damn hot.
From the "I’m Like A Bird" singer to "Swan Lake." Hey, there aren’t many events that unite N.E.R.D. and ballet dancers. Diana would have made a heck of mixed tape. Maybe Kanye will use one of the orchestra’s big old kettle drums on his next disc. Think Fergie made the entire viewing audience "rock rock"? She sure was rubbing herself enough.
Joss Stone and her band know how to throw some funk around. In her hands the Bowie cover seems right. Didn’t know Princess Diana was a big Supertramp fan. Wembley’s got its first sing-along of the day.
Didn’t see any ladies undies hitting the stage while Tom Jones was on. What’s up with that? Has the Welshman lost his mojo? Guess Joss revitalized it a bit, though. How did Joe Perry do on guitar?
That old softie Rod Stewart went right for the heart with "Maggie May" and "Sailing." And who would have predicted that Kanye and Andrew Lloyd Webber would both get their string sections on? Anyone got comments on Mr. West’s shades? Anyone predicting how Diddy is going to sound?
Our answer to that last question is: pretty damned good.
Which artists or performances have impressed you so far? Chat it up in the "Comments" section and check out some concert pics after the jump.

Nelly Furtado, Joss Stone, and Natashia Bedingfield are three of the ladies who are going to hit the stage in at this weekend’s Concert for Diana. They’re also three of the ladies who have come by our Unplugged studios and kicked some acoustic butt. Breezing through their individual sessions might be a good way to prep for Sunday’s show. The entire six-hour extravaganza is being streamed on VH1.com starting at 11 a.m. EST. Which artist is going to rock the house?

Nelly Furtado made her grand entrance to Sunday’s Juno Awards (Canada’s answer to the Grammys) from the ceiling, in a purported tribute to her first hit, 2001’s "I’m Like a Bird." Except, she looks more like a bat or maybe a marine animal after an oil spill. Seriously, the only bird she’s like is a scary-ass one. If she’s like a bird, she’ll only peck your eyes out.
Regardless of her fright factor, Nelly went on to host the show, perform and win five awards. After the ceremony, Nelly talked about the big night, saying, "I’m very much floating and flying without harness." How high is she?

Victoria, British Columbia, Nelly Furtado’s hometown, has given the promicuous girl her own day. Sounds just like Jennifer Hudson, doesn’t it? (Actually, sounds more like basketball star Steve Nash - the Victoria-raised Phoenix Suns MVP was similarly honored last year.) Nelly will be present at today’s ceremony, and then, later tonight, will kick off a nine-date Canadian tour. At the celebration, meanwhile, a troupe of high-schoolers from the singer’s alma mater will dance a choreographed routine to her music. Later, everyone will wear pigtails, fly like a bird, eat granola bars, and get funky with Timbaland beats. Just kidding about that last part. Tells us how would YOU would celebrate Nelly Day.
