Nearly every truly iconic music video since 1984 has been nominated for at least one Video Music Award in its year of eligibility, but in the twenty-seven years that the ceremony has been held, only ten individual music videos have won five or more Moonmen. (This year, Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep” and Katy Perry‘s “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West, could potentially join the club.) These videos got the attention and praise of everybody in their respective years of release. But do they stand the test of time? What about their competition? Here’s our look at the ten most-lauded videos in VMA history.

Madonna, “Ray of Light”: Five VMAs (of eight nominations)
Concept: Madonna raves on fast-forward all over the planet.
Competition: “Ray Of Light” wasn’t the only video with eight nominations: Garbage‘s video for “Push It” had as many nods (though, ultimately, no wins). We’d totally forgotten about “Push It,” actually, and its stocking-masked nun heist/exorcism would be huge today, because it looks like a Lady Gaga video from the 1990s, and if there are two things music fans like these days, they’re Lady Gaga and the 1990s. The year of eligibility for this ceremony was also the height of jiggy rap, but while Diddy‘s five nominations were split among four videos (Puff Daddy and the Family: “It’s All About The Benjamins”; Notorious B.I.G. Featuring Puff Daddy: “Mo Money Mo Problems”; Mariah Carey Featuring Puff Daddy and the Family: “Honey (Remix)”; Puff Daddy & Jimmy Page: “Come With Me”), Will Smith got as many nominations just for “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” (though the video only won one Moonman).
Verdict: While we love “Push It,” the fact that we had to refresh our memory sort of proves that “Ray Of Light” was simply the stronger video that year. As for jiggy rap? Hype Williams was robbed, sure—none of the Best Direction nominees, even, were jiggy rap—but Diddy has gotten his fair share of VMAs over the years (and even hosted one of the ceremonies). HOLDS UP

Green Day took a break from working on their new album last week to road-test what they’d written—sort of. On Tuesday the band announced a last-minute, Thursday night benefit show for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the 250-capacity Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, CA, and their set that night included, by some accounts, nineteen unreleased songs. Despite the “STRICT NO CAMERA, NO CELL PHONE POLICY,” a recording of “Amy” made it onto YouTube, and judging from the lyrics, later posted on the band’s website, the song is a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse (“27, gone without a trace/ And you walked away from your drink”).

“Amy” kicked off the encore, which also included a cover of Ozzy Osbourne‘s “Goodbye to Romance” and eight Green Day fan favorites. The band has provided no information on the timeline of their upcoming studio album, nor any word on which of the new songs will even make the cut.

Our pals at Spike live on the testosterone side of life. Fist-bumping, oogling ladies, arguing over the play of the game and the most unstoppable jock – you know, guy stuff. To make sure we understand where they’re coming from, on June 21 at 10 pm, they’re presenting a show called Guys Choice Awards. A number of debates are raging right now on the channel’s Web site regarding this show, and you’re invited to weigh in with your vote. A couple of representative queries:

Which MC has the sickest rhymes, T.I. or Lil Wayne?

Which band is the ballsiest, Metallica or Green Day?

There are lots of other categories to choose from as well. GO VOTE! You’ll see the fruit of your labor on June 21. And make sure you check the “Best Unsupported Role,” if indeed you are a guy.

There’s already a consensus around Green Day‘s new disc, 21st Century Breakdown. Critics and journalists who have a spent time with it say it’s the band’s most ambitious album yet – and better still, they say the guys completely pull off all their experiments.

The punk trio has come a long way since the days of Dookie. The new record has massive guitar flourishes and elements of classic rock guiding its action.

“I think the music is very linear and it takes you on a ride … but it all connects,” Billie Jo Armstrong told MTV news, “I’ve always said if you’re going to write a political song, it’s gotta come from the same places that you’d write a love song,” Armstrong said. “But I think the record has these ebbs and flows and it has these dynamics to it. You go from a song like ‘Christian’s Inferno,’ which is the most hateful song I’ve ever written — the most diabolic. And then there’s a song like ‘Last Night on Earth,’ which is like that soul-crushing sort of love moment and, you know, one right after the other, so I think that kind of represents what the record is about in a lot of ways.”

If you want to hear their wildly anticipated disc a full week before it hits the stores on May 15, make sure to be here this Friday: We’re streaming the entire CD.

Green Day freaks have been waiting a while for the superstar punk trio’s follow-up to their monumental American Idiot. But the wildly anticipated 21st Century Breakdown is on its way (due May 15) and to whet appetites, the disc’s first video is being premiered on VH1 Friday, April 24 at 8 pm ET. Director Matthew Cullen says that “Know Your Enemy” is going to visually overwhelming. It was shot in downtown Los Angeles, and features the band in performance.

“There’s a lot of symbolism that I tried to mirror [in the shoot],” Cullen told MTV news. “I took a lot of influence from Green Day’s lyrics and the imagery of [street artist] Banksy. It may not sound like a lot, but it’s huge visually. It’s gonna be a new experience for a lot of their fans. I mean, it’s still Green Day, but it’s just bigger.”

21st Century Breakdown tells the story of of a young couple, Christian and Gloria, as they negotiate “the mess and promise of the century so far,” according to the band’s record label. The tale features three acts: “Heroes and Cons,” “Charlatans and Saints,” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.”

Songs include “21 Guns,” “East Jesus Nowhere,” “Before the Lobotomy,” and “Restless Heart Syndrome.” Rolling Stone has said the disc is “a record of die-hard punk ideals…tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement,” and that the music is a “rock opera in which the rock always comes first.” Butch Vig, famed Nirvana producer, was at the helm of the new album.

Green Day has been testing the new material in clubs and theaters around their stomping grounds of the San Francisco Bay area for the last few days.

Stay tuned to the VH1 blog for more info and a sneak peek at the “Know Your Enemy” video.
