Carson Daly Remembers The Time Lady Gaga Was Just A Fan Begging To Be Let In To The TRL Studios In The TRL Decade

MTV’s Total Request Live was a huge part of our youth, and in this clip from the upcoming VH1 Rock Doc The TRL Decade, Carson Daly talks about how important the show was to aspiring musician Lady Gaga, too. Daly explains that during a recent interview with Gaga, she admitted that when she was a teenager, she and her friends went to Times Square with a sign reading “Carson, let me up!” and that seeing so many larger-than-life pop stars on the show is what drove her to become what she is now. Of course now he’s kicking himself for not letting her in.

Be Relevant This Halloween: How To Dress As 2011′s Biggest Music Moments And Memes

Halloween is coming up and it’s time to start getting serious about costumes if you don’t want to be a sexy [insert noun here] or a regular-person-but-just-covered-in-blood-because-that’s-all-you-had-time-to-buy. This Halloween dare to be a little bit braver, a little more irreverent, and a little more clever with your costumes. That’s right folks — no more Lady Gaga get ups, lest you be deemed “like, sah 2010!” There’s a wealth of cultural reference at your disposal this year, with 2011 being renamed the Chinese Year Of The Meme (it hasn’t really, I just said that to get your attention). We’ve picked out some of our favourite musical memes of the year in the hopes that you’ll be inspired to trick yourself out in the spirit of a wickedly self-aware Halloween…

PREGONCÉ

Why? Only the baby of hip-pop royalty Jay-Z and Beyoncé could become an Internet meme and every GIF aficionado’s wet dream before the little tyke is even born. Barely beyond conception, Baby Bey-Z hit the Internet harder than “Friday” (see below) and made “Pregoncé” a word faster than you can say, “I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly.” For Halloween, go as Pregoncé in the costume she wore at the VMAs earlier this year when she unleashed unveiled her newly rounded belly to the world.

How? We’ll start from the top down: first you need some crazy 70′s flicked blonde hair, wig it if you’re a brunette or a dude, and if you’re already blessed with the golden tresses, heat up those rollers, girl! Next you’ll need a white shirt (stuffed with a pillow, of course we don’t expect you to actually get pregnant) and black pants; easy. The sparkle blazer might be a bit harder. I suggest taking a cheap / second hand blazer, a can of spray on glue, a butt-load of glitter and having the absolute time of your life. Add some velcro to the inside of the blazer so it’s easy to rip open over the course of Halloween as you constantly re-enact the big reveal. Carry around a fake microphone so you can throw it down dramatically before you rub your belly emphatically and smile, smile, smile!

And The Greatest Song Of The ’00s Is…



All week, VH1 has been rolling out the 100 Greatest Songs of The ’00s and tonight we finally made it to number one which is…(drumroll)…Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”! We’ve always maintained that this song is like a party(and we’re all invited) so we think its place at #1 is well-deserved, but we want to know if you agree. Our distinguished panel certainly does — they can’t help but booty pop in their seats just talking about it. Mob Wives star Drita D’avanzo puts it best though, when she says, “Beyonce and Jay-Z is like peanut butter and jelly, and you just want it.” After the jump,check out the full list of the top 100 songs from the ’00s, and then make your way to the comments section to let us know if Beyonce is the best choice to sit at the top of our list.

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga Team For “The Lady Is A Tramp”



Perhaps the most anticipated collaboration from the now chart-topping(!) Duets II was Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga‘s rendition of “The Lady Is A Tramp.” To begin with, Gaga is as monocultural as they come these days. Plus, as Bennett told us, “she has the same gift as Ella Fitzgerald.” Then none other than Gay Talese profiled the duet for The New Yorker.

With the album in stores, naturally a video for the lead-off track has followed. Gaga is no less showy—that’s her nature—but her performance is in sync, not in competition, with Bennett’s. The duo riff on the lyrics, very much in a vocal jazz pop tradition. The least surprising change: a shout-out to songwriters Rodgers & Hart replaces one to Walter Winchell. Even if the redoubtable columnist had a 2011 equivalent (Nicki Finke plus Perez Hilton?) we doubt committed anti-bullying campaigner Gaga would sing his praises.

She’s also a smart fit for a vocal partner in this musical-theater tradition—so much so that the song seems well-chosen, until you realize how many others would have worked just as well (except perhaps for the titular pun). For all her outré accoutrements, Gaga fits snugly into this tradition, as someone seriously committed to her art yet mercifully unconcerned with Baby Boomer-born ideas of pop “authenticity.” It’s no wonder that Tony Bennett “gets” her.

The inaugural O Music Awards were held in Las Vegas back in April of this year, and we were there with behind-the-scenes coverage every step of the way (remember our punch drunk interview with Rebecca Black?). The show was such a resounding success that the powers-that-be have decided to hold another one this year. On Halloween, no less! Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj And A Slew Of Today’s Biggest Pop Stars Headline The iHeartRadio Festival [PHOTOS]

The MGM Grand played host to a plethora of pop stars this weekend for the Clear Channel-sponsored iHeartRadio Festival, two nights of genre-spanning, crowd-pleasing pop music. A mix of veterans and newcomers thrilled the (reportedly very drunk) crowd on both nights. The most successful performers were those who stuck to a setlist of hits, like Jay-Z, who may have performed “On To The Next One” but didn’t take its advice about his old songs, including favorites from The Blueprint and The Black Album alongside newer singles like “Empire State of Mind” (with a guest appearance by earlier performer Alicia Keys). Those whose songs were less well-known by the crowd, like Sublime with Rome, were less well-received.

Perhaps the big surprise of the weekend, according to reports, was Jennifer Lopez, who, in a set that spanned her musical career, proved supremely capable of standing among the pop titans of today (with a Pitbull feature on “On the Floor”). Saturday’s “special guest” Sting also more than pulled his weight, backing Steven Tyler on bass early in the evening, then joining Lady Gaga for performances of “Stand By Me” and his own “King of Pain.”

Fashion Week Roundup: Kim K. Hangs With La La, And Lady Gaga Admits She’s A Basketball Wives Fan [Photos]

Earlier this week, we pointed out that VH1 stars like Olivia from Love & Hip Hop and Laura and Gloria Govan from Basketball Wives L.A. were making the rounds at New York Fashion Week. After days of (seemingly) endless fashion shows, red carpets, television appearances, and other assorted fashion events, we’ve gathered that quite a few of our favorite reality stars were out and about and hob-nobbing with other fashion-loving A-listers. Check out some of our favorite shots of everyone from Mob Wives‘ Renee Graziano, to La La Vasquez chilling with her pal Kim Kardashian, to the Govan sisters meeting Lady Gaga.(!!!)

Oh, and we should note that Gaga, like Adele before her, has admitted that she loves the Basketball Wives. Gloria Govan explained to Life & Style that when they met, Gaga told her that “she didn’t get to watch that much TV, but she really likes the show when she gets to watch it! She was like ‘Wow, you guys are the Basketball Wives, aren’t you!’ It was so amazing that she knew who we were!”

Tony Bennett Raves About His Duets Collaborator Lady Gaga: “She Has The Same Gift As Ella Fitzgerald”

Last month, the incomparable Tony Bennett turned 85 years young. While no one would say a word edgewise if Tony decided to rest on his impressive collection of laurels, this super groovy daddy-o is doing anything but. Last month, he introduced the amazing Amy Winehouse tribute at the VMAs, and next week, he’s releasing his latest album, Duets II. The record features collaborations with today’s chart toppers like Michael Bublé, John Mayer, Norah Jones and the late Miss Winehouse (the latter of which we’ll have for you to check out tomorrow).

The most anticipated track on the record, though, is Tony Bennett’s duet with Lady Gaga on the Rogers and Hart classic, “The Lady Is A Tramp.” Our VH1 News team recently caught up with Bennett, and he had nothing but lavish praise to bestow on the Mother Monster. “She is an amazing singer, she has the same gift as Ella Fitzgerald,” he told us. It’s not just her ability to sing and tickle the ivories that has him impressed, though: “I like the audience reaction when she does a performance. The people go out to lunch, I’ve never heard such enthusiasm.” We’ve never heard the Little Monsters’ reaction to Gaga’s concerts described in that manner, but we’re pretty confident that they’re gonna eat it up. You know, like lunch!

Lady Gaga’s Endless Promotional Campaign For Born This Way Will Continue Into 2012 With New Year’s Eve Performance

Some have argued that the sales of Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way LP have been disappointing. Whether or not that’s actually true, you can’t lay any of the blame for the sales numbers on the Mother Monster’s promotional efforts. As we documented with our patented Gaga-Mometer™ a few months ago, she’s been pushing the merits of her album since way back on June 21, 2010, making stops at the Grammys, American Idol, the Howard Stern Show and the 2011 VMAs along the way. Soon, you’ll be able to add a Times Square concert for a million-plus revelers on New Year’s Eve to that list.

It was reported earlier today that Gaga has been booked to ring in 2012 with a performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest live from the heart of New York City. Meanwhile, Fergie will be stationed in Los Angeles and will host whatever the West Coast equivalent to a ball-drop is. No further details about Gaga’s performance have emerged, so at this point, we ask for you to keep your fingers crossed that Jo Calderone won’t be working on a set of new material that night.
