Sting Hosts Sting Tribute Show For Sting’s Birthday
Sting celebrated his 60th birthday with a star-studded concert at the Beacon Theater in New York on Saturday night, with all proceeds going to the Robin Hood Foundation. Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Mary J. Blige and will.i.am gathered to duet with Sting on his own songs. Fine Wine: 15 Men in Music Who’ve Aged Remarkably Well

As the Red Hot Chili Peppers release their tenth studio album this week, we can’t help but ~~daydream~~ ruminate about how much of a sex symbol frontman Anthony Kiedis was—who could forget the sock?!—and still is. Time has been kind to Mr. Suck My Kiss, and he is definitely not alone in that regard; there’s an entire legion of men in music whose good looks and sex appeal have fermented in the manner of a perfectly-mature wine.

Raw “Dancing In The Dark” Footage Reminds Us That Bruce Springsteen Does Not Have Moves

Bruce Springsteen is a man of many talents. Dancing is not one of them.

This was somewhat evident in the 1984 video for “Dancing In The Dark” but became brutally clear when home-video rehearsal footage for the video surfaced online a bit back. (In case you haven’t seen it, we’ve embedded it below. One highlight is actually after the routine, when Springsteen mockingly imitates the “guitar face” of someone they’d seen playing at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.) Without any context, the dance just seemed like a series of moves Springsteen (and the late Clarence Clemons) were testing out, to see how they’d look on film.

Newly surfaced footage, above, suggests otherwise. Apparently these proto-Carlton Dance-meets-Jets from West Side Story moves were choreographed! The clip above is clearly either the raw footage for Jeff Stein‘s rejected cut of the video, or at the very least, on-set in-costume test footage. No wonder Stein was replaced (by Brian de Palma, no less); the concept, featuring dancing in the dark may as well have been dreamt up by the DeMarco Brothers (the literal-minded choreography duo played by Chris Parnell and Chris Kattan on Saturday Night Live). The addition of Courteney Cox, a backing band, and a large crowd definitely improved this video.

During a concert performance in England, will.i.am, Fergie and the other two guys told the crowd that the show was going to be the “last time we’re going to be in England for a long time”; they later expanded on that statement by announcing that they are taking an “indefinite break” from making music together. Sadly, this probably means that you are likely to see will.i.am once again appearing as a hologram on a television near you imminently. [HuffPo]

Big Man R.I.P.: The Top Five Non-E Street Band Performances By The Late Clarence Clemons

The Big Man, Clarence Clemons, passed on Saturday due to complications from his recent stroke. He was 69. Saxophonist Clemons was perhaps the most essential member of the E Street Band, but his appearance on Lady Gaga’s latest single “Edge of Glory” is a potent reminder of the range of his body of work outside Bruce Springsteen collaborations. Here are his five best:

5. Ian Hunter, “All of the Good Ones Are Taken”
Clemons has a really great solo two-and-change minutes into the title track off Ian Hunter’s 1983 album All of the Good Ones Are Taken (though a stand-in appears in the music video). Without his performance, this Mott the Hoople member’s solo effort wouldn’t have had its single (especially since guitarist Mick Ronson only played on one song). This largely forgotten video used to get a lot of play on local and syndicated non-MTV video shows.

R.I.P. Clarence Clemons (1942-2011)

Sad news to pass along this evening: Clarence “Big Man” Clemons, the renowned saxophone player in Bruce Springsteen‘s E Street Band, passed away earlier this evening as a result of complications from the stroke he suffered earlier this week.

We’d like to pay our respects to The Big Man by programming 24 hours of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band on VH1 Classic. Starting at 7 p.m. on Sunday night, we’ll be airing the concert films Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Live in New York City (2000) and Live In Barcelona (2002) back-to-back for 24 consecutive hours.

Clemons first rose to prominence in 1971 after agreeing to team up with fellow Asbury Park, NJ musician Bruce Springsteen. The Bruce Springsteen Band, as they were called back then, didn’t make it very far, but Bruce reconstituted the group a few years later under the moniker of the E Street Band and, as they say, the rest is history. Clemons became an instrumental part of Springsteen’s band, contributing some of the most famous sax solos in music history on songs like “Born To Run” and “Jungleland,” and was such an integral part of Springsteen’s creative process that The Boss wrote the song “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and included their origin story as part of one of the verses.

Clarence Clemons, Famed Saxophonist And Springsteen/Gaga Collaborator, Suffers Stroke

Clarence Clemons suffered a stroke at his home last night at his home in Florida, an AP source confirmed after an initial Showbiz411 report surfaced last night. The Showbiz411 story suggests that the stroke was extremely serious, but there has not yet been confirmation nor denial of this report.

Clemons, the legendary saxophone player from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, has also had a long history of guest appearances—most recently on several tracks of Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way. He also wrote a partially fictional memoir last fall. We wish him the best in his recovery, as does Lady Gaga, who sent this Tweet out earlier this morning:

Springsteen Live Tonight on VH1!!!

The Boss Where’s the best place to see Bruce Springsteen? Don’t make me actually write down the answer – you know it’s Jersey. Those fans without tickets to this evening’s E Street Band bash at Continental Arena in East Rutherford (which is most of the people on the planet) can get a fix. At 8 pm EST, we’re cutting into the show and pulling out a couple performances for you. One tune is definitely “Radio Nowhere,” the blistering firebomb from the singer’s new Magic. The other is a Springsteen classic that the guys are keeping us guessing about. We’ll find out when they tear into it.

And don’t forget: Tivo fiends need to set their controls for the all-Bruce marathon that’s taking place today on VH1 Classic. The channel is awash in documentaries, live performances, “Storytellers” footage, and other great stuff.
