Starting at 4 p.m. ET this afternoon, VH1 will be airing six uninterrupted hours of footage from The Concert For New York City, which was originally held in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on October 20, 2001. We’ll be streaming the entire show this one-time only on VH1.com, and you’ll also be able to tune-in on your television to watch, too. As a way to help you remember this epic event, we put together this gallery of images from that unforgettable evening. The Concert For New York City: 10 Years Later is being hosted by native New Yorker Ed Burns, and will feature memorable, once-in-a-lifetime performances from the likes of Paul McCartney, The Who, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child and many, many more. Hard to believe, but it’s nearly been 10 years since our nation endured the horrific attacks of 9/11/01. NEW YORK, NY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 – VH1’s original broadcast of The Concert for New York brought together some of the biggest names in entertainment from all over the world to New York’s Madison Square Garden. Taped just weeks after 9/11, the event was organized to honor and support the victims and heroes of one of our nation’s most tragic events, and raised more than 30 million for the Robin Hood 9/11 Relief Fund, which distributed 100% of the money to charities benefitting victims and their families. In a special six-hour telecast, VH1’s The Concert for New York City: Ten Years Later will air in its entirety without commercial interruption on Sunday, September 11 from 4pm-10pm* and will simulcast on VH1.com. The re-broadcast will be hosted by actor/director/filmmaker Edward Burns, who was also a participant in the original concert presentation.
While it’s hard for some of us (*cough*) older (*cough*) folk to believe that it’s been thirty whole years since MTV launched, in a lot of ways, it’s hard to remember a time when MTV wasn’t around. Of course, for people who consider themselves either Gen Y or a Millenial, MTV is something that is generally taken for granted because it’s always been there, but for those of us who are Gen X or older, the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981 was something that we now recognize as having impacted our culture in ways too numerous to count.
As we look back at 30 years of MTV—highlights of which have been playing all weekend long on VH1 Classic—we thought we’d take this opportunity to throw you back to the beginning of an era, days that even predated visionary video artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna. Of course, every trivia nut worth their salt knows that “Video Killed The Radio Star” was the first video ever played on MTV, but what about the next 29? Take a gander at our list below of the first 30 videos ever played on Music Television, filled with some artists that were later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame (Rod Stewart, The Pretenders, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) and some that we had never even HEARD of before today (PH.D, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters).
This year’s Rock Honors taped this weekend, and we had The Office‘s Rainn Wilson sneak backstage to get the scoop from this year’s performers (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters) and the main event (the Who). See them, feel them, touch them, heal them? Word has it that the Flaming Lips will string together an array of tunes by the Who for their segment of this week’s Rock Honors bash. By the looks of the above rehearsal footage, it’ll include “I’m Free” and “Pinball Wizard.” The show airs Thursday night at 9/8c. Avant oddballs the Flaming Lips are gearing up for their performance at next week’s Rock Honors, where they’ll be taking on the Who (a dream come true, for frontman Wayne Coyne). Known for their on-stage spectaculars, the band — who’ll be joining the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Incubus in kneeling at the altar of the Who — will also be celebrating something else: after seven years, the band have finished working on Christmas on Mars, a concept film about the first Christmas on the Red Planet, starring the band. They plan on screening the film this summer at a series of shows.
So what to expect from the Lips’ Who tribute and their latest foray into film? Just like the band they’re honoring, weirdness and spectacle, and lots of it. If you can’t wait until next week, check out the craziest on-stage antics of rock and rollers here.

Sure, lots of us wind up playing air guitar when a great song comes on the radio. And for an instant or so, maybe we even think we are that rocker. Well, to celebrate this year’s Rock Honors show, we’ve come up with another way to pretend you’re a star. We’re offering everyone a chance to immortalize themselves by becoming Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey for awhile.
Our You Are WHO sweepstakes provides all its participants with masks of the band’s leaders. We want you to get creative by taking pictures of yourself in wild situations while you’re wearing ‘em. You could be cooking burgers, water-skiing, or sky-diving – doesn’t really matter to us. We want to see your most fun (meaning odd, cool, bizarre, or memorable) photos. Two winners will be randomly chosen from all entries and will take home a new version of Rock Band and enough points to download a bundle of Who songs being released on July 15th. (Sorry Wii players, the bundle is only for XBOX 360 and Playstation 3.)
There are two categories: “group” photos and “solo” photos. Grab some pals, or go it alone.
