Stealing the late night limelight this weekend, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake joined forces in awesomeness on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon for their latest “History Of Rap” medley. Busting moves like they were born to do it, the dynamic duo’s comedic chemistry is hard to deny. And while we’re all hankering for JT to come back with a new album, we’re quite happy to enjoy him in such musically-related comedy roles. Especially when joined with Fallon, and busting out such classics as Coolio‘s “Gangsta’s Paradise” and other crowd pleasers both past and present, including Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Bass” and Sir Mix-A-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back”.
The MGM Grand played host to a plethora of pop stars this weekend for the Clear Channel-sponsored iHeartRadio Festival, two nights of genre-spanning, crowd-pleasing pop music. A mix of veterans and newcomers thrilled the (reportedly very drunk) crowd on both nights. The most successful performers were those who stuck to a setlist of hits, like Jay-Z, who may have performed “On To The Next One” but didn’t take its advice about his old songs, including favorites from The Blueprint and The Black Album alongside newer singles like “Empire State of Mind” (with a guest appearance by earlier performer Alicia Keys). Those whose songs were less well-known by the crowd, like Sublime with Rome, were less well-received.
Perhaps the big surprise of the weekend, according to reports, was Jennifer Lopez, who, in a set that spanned her musical career, proved supremely capable of standing among the pop titans of today (with a Pitbull feature on “On the Floor”). Saturday’s “special guest” Sting also more than pulled his weight, backing Steven Tyler on bass early in the evening, then joining Lady Gaga for performances of “Stand By Me” and his own “King of Pain.”
Justin Timberlake’s Song About Not Singing Wins Music Emmy
Apparently the Emmy Awards want a new album from Justin Timberlake as much as we do, because they gave him (and co-writers Seth Myers, John Mulaney and Katreese Barnes) an emmy for Original Music and Lyrics for his opening monologue on the May 21 episode of Saturday Night Live (which also featured “3 Way (The Golden Rule),” also with Lady Gaga). Justin Timberlake superfans are likely scouring YouTube after having heard about the surprise concert FreeSol performed at Southern Hospitality, the Manhattan barbecue restaurant Timberlake helped launch. Not content to merely be a restaurateur/A&R (he got FreeSol signed to his Interscope imprint Tennman Records and directed their video “Hoodies On, Hats Low”), Timberlake lent his talent on vocals, keyboards, and guitar to the band for several of their songs, including “Don’t Give It Away,” as well as a rendition of Timberlake’s own “What Goes Around…Comes Around.”
Who knew that his invitation to a Free Sol showcase yesterday afternoon would include a performance by JT himself? Perhaps the celebrities in attendance, including Khloe and Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, as well as Timberlake’s In Time costar Amanda Seyfried. In any case, this appearance was merely a tease for the free (limited to 500 fans) show tonight at Irving Plaza in New York. Yesterday’s impromptu show suggests that Timberlake will also take the stage tonight.

This memorable promo for a 1984 MTV contest was pegged to the release of John Cougar Mellencamp’s album, Uh Huh, which featured the eighties heartland anthem “Pink Houses.” The grand prize winner received a house in Bloomington, Indiana (Mellencamp’s hometown), which came with a special paint job: Pink.

Early this morning, the NY Daily News Gatecrasher blog reported that Joe Jonas got a particularly chilly reception from the “hostile hipsters” who attended the Paper-affiliated party at the branded temporary skatepark-cum-music venue House of Vans in Williamsburg, Brooklyn last Wednesday. According to the Gatecrasher report, Jonas was booed and pelted with “Nerf-style mini-basketballs.” The story is getting some buzz because it confirms readers’ (and some writers’) assumptions about both Joe Jonas and Williamsburg residents, and it illustrates the long road Jonas will have to walk if he hopes to cross over into dance-pop. The reality of the situation, though, may be a bit more complicated.

Mumford & Sons Debut New Song on Colorado’s KBCO
When we got Mumford & Sons in the studio for their VH1 Unplugged taping, the band mentioned trying out new material on the road before heading into the studio with it. Nevertheless, no live recordings of decent quality have surfaced until this weekend, when the band performed a yet-untitled song on the air at KBCO. Fans have been calling this song “Home.” [Paste]

Where has SexyGone? We all know that Justin Timberlake brought “SexyBack” in 2006, but since he seems more interested in acting than recording music these days, he’s left a sizable gap in the music scene. However, recent college graduate Mike Posner seems ready, willing and able to fill Mr. Timberlake’s place at the pop music table while Justin is busy schmoozing Oscar voters.
After gathering some steam on the underground mixtape circuit over the last year and change, Posner broke out big time as a solo artist this summer with his smash hit diss track, “Cooler Than Me.” Now he’s back with the second single off 31 Seconds To Takeoff, “Please Don’t Go.”
Whereas “Cooler Than Me” struck a chord with its fiery take on the inflated egos of some of his Duke University brethren, “Please Don’t Go” shows the softer, sweeter side of Posner. Will this be as big of a hit for him as “Cooler Than Me”? Well, given the success that Bruno Mars is experiencing these days, there’s a good chance that it could.
