The cause of Heath Ledger’s mysterious death has finally been made public fifteen days after he was found dead in his New York City apartment. The city’s medical examiner’s office revealed that the official cause was an accidental drug overdose, after “acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.”
His ex-fiancee Michelle Williams and their two-year old daughter Matilda have joined Heath’s family this week in Australia to attend the actor’s funeral. Today his father released a second statement, celebrating Heath as “a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend.” He also commented on the autopsy results, stating, “While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath’s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.”
And now, he can rest in peace.

According to UsWeekly’s cover story this week, Heath Ledger’s ex-fiancee pleaded with the actor to get help, going so far as to drive him to a rehab facility in California when their daughter was five months old. Ledger refused to get out of the car, and promised to clean up on his own. Ledger’s break-up with Michelle Williams this past fall was the result of his addiction to heroin, cocaine and a variety of pills. Most recently, Williams had threatened mandatory drug tests prior his visits with their daughter.
When news broke that Ledger had died, Williams was inconsolable, and reportedly “screamed and cried,” according to a source on the set of her film. Shooting on Williams’ upcoming film Blue Valentine has been suspended until the actress has had time to cope with the loss.
Speaking of coping, Ledger’s co-star Jake Gyllenhaal is understandably beside himself, with Ledger’s death proving “a major trauma” for him. Gyllenhaal, who is godfather to Ledger’s daughter Matilda, left the set of his latest film, but returned a few days later to resume shooting.

We’re still not over our OMG WTF reaction to Heath Ledger’s death. The sad news continues to pour in, so here’s your morning recap of what is known thus far. RIP, Heath.
- The actor was discovered by his housekeeper and his masseuse, who had arrived for a 3:00 massage appointment at his loft in SoHo, NYC. They discovered him lying face down on the floor, naked. His masseuse called her friend, an EMT who also happens to be Ashley Olsen’s bodyguard, who was at the twin’s apartment down the street.
- There were not pills scattered around the apartment, as was originally reported, but police did find both prescription and non-prescription sleeping pills near Heath.
- Heath was reportedly sick from pneumonia at the time of the death and also suffering from insomnia (he had just returned from shooting a film in London).
- His family has spoken out and does not believe his death was a suicide.
- Ex-fiancee Michelle Williams has returned to New York from Sweden (where she is shooting a movie) with their 2-year old daughter Matilda. She is reportedly “devastated.”Um, obviously.
- Many people are speaking out about Heath’s life, including Focus Features, the company that produced Brokeback Mountain. They said, “Heath Ledger was a courageous actor, and a great soul. He gave us the gift of sharing his fearless and beautiful love – of his craft, and of all who worked with him – for which all of us will be eternally grateful.”

Truly disturbing news: Police in New York report that Heath Ledger has been found dead in a lower Manhattan apartment, and, judging by the scene, suggest that a drug overdose is the cause. The 28-year-old actor earned his star status in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, and was part of the thick cast in Todd Haynes‘ recent Bob Dylan portrait, I’m Not There. Lots of movie fans are looking forward to his role as the Joker in this summer’s The Dark Knight.
