Hip Hop Honors Interview: Chuck D And Boots Riley (Part 2)

All this week, we brought you behind-the-scenes interviews recorded during the rehearsals for this year’s Hip Hop Honors (the show taped a few weeks ago, but will premiere on air Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c). For our last clip, we end where we started, continuing our chat with Public Enemy frontman Chuck D and Boots Riley of the Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. The politically minded rappers talk at length about the depoliticized state of hip-hop in ‘09. It’s about as revealing as political discourse over booming music, on a theater balcony, can be.

Hip Hop Honors Interview: Redman

All this week, we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes interviews recorded during the rehearsals for this year’s Hip Hop Honors (the show taped a few weeks ago, but will premiere on air Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c). Today’s offering features Redman talking about the 10 years between his two Black Out! collaboration albums with Method Man, and whether we’ll have to wait that long for a third.

Hip Hop Honors Interview: Ashanti

All this week, we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes interviews recorded during the rehearsals for this year’s Hip Hop Honors (the show taped a few weeks ago, but will premiere on air Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c). Today’s offering features Ashanti ruminating on her days at Murder Inc., as well as offering a taste of what to expect from her in the future.

Oh, and funnily enough, if you watched this week’s Real Chance of Love 2, you saw that Classy told a joke that didn’t exactly put Real in stitches. Funnily enough, Ashanti tells the same joke in the mini tribute to Def Comedy Jam below, to a slightly better response.

Hip Hop Honors Interview: Ja Rule

All this week, we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes interviews recorded during the rehearsals for this year’s Hip Hop Honors (the show taped a few weeks ago, but will premiere on air Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c). Today’s offering finds Ja Rule reflecting on his Murder Inc. days, and how times have changed. He’s no longer in hip-hop for the money, for example. His explanation is probably less altruistic than that sounds.

Hip Hop Honors Interview: Chuck D And Boots Riley

All this week, we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes interviews recorded during the rehearsals for this year’s Hip Hop Honors (the show taped a few weeks ago, but will premiere on air Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c). We kick things off with Public Enemy frontman Chuck D and Boots Riley of the Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. They talk about what Def Jam Records (the subject of this year’s Honors) means to them and Chuck explains why he’s disappointed that a certain someone isn’t on the lineup for this year’s show. If he were 100 percent satisfied with the way things are, he just wouldn’t be Chuck D.

Tracy Morgan Is A Rapper! Who Knew?

Would you believe Tracy Morgan raps under the name Scoopy Giles? Would you believe he created “Dumplin’ Butts,” a hip-hop song about “big fat juicy buns,” way before “Baby’s Got Back”? (Our favorite verse: “Allah says don’t eat no swine, but you know I’ll eat your pork.”) No wonder Tracy is the perfect host for VH1’s Hip Hop Honors, premiering Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c.  Watch his music video masterpiece now and catch him explaining how his alter ego helped to found Def Jam records.

Tracy Morgan Is Scoopy Giles

Did you know that there was a person integral to the foundation of Def Jam, who wasn’t part of the elite group of the label’s bosses saluted at this year’s Hip Hop Honors (premiering Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c)? Well, there wasn’t, but that’s not going to keep HHH host Tracy Morgan from pretending that there was anyway. In the clip above, he plays Scoopy Giles, the “fifth Beatle or the sixth Jackson or the invisible fourth Tony! Toni! Toné! also named Tony” to Def Jam’s legacy. He’s interviewed by Nancy Grace, who it turns out, is an actual real person.
