hhh_tiIt was almost impossible not to be influenced by James “J. Prince” Smith’s Rap-A-Lot Records if you grew up listening to rap in the South. The Houston native started the label in 1986, and has released more than 100 albums since, including all the classics we counted down in our latest feature, The 25 Greatest Rap-A-Lot Songs Of All Time. With J. Prince getting honored at this year’s Hip Hop Honors, we got the current King of the South, T.I., to talk about the Rap-A-Lot legacy and his first memories of the Geto Boys. Craig Robinson, comic and star of The Office, Hot Tub Time Machine, Shrek Forever After and many more, has signed on to host 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors (airing Monday, June 7 at 9/8c), so we thought we’d take some time to chat with him about the parallels between hosting and stand-up comedy (and stand-up comedy and hip-hop), which acts he’s excited about seeing, his musical background (fun fact: he was an elementary school music teacher before breaking into showbiz) why he doesn’t rap in public and the funny thing about the Dirty South and baby-making music…

In the video above (as well as the rest of the clips from the session with Complex Media Executive Editor Peter Rubin), hip-hop luminaries and 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors executive producers Fab Five Freddy and Nelson George hit back at the negative chatter that has surrounded this year’s show (airing Monday, June 7 at 9/8c). Of particular interest may be their comments regarding the criticism that focusing the show on the Dirty South is somehow marginalizing or ghettoizing people of the South.

timbaland_announcement

Press release on this much-deserved addition to 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors is below!

For the first time in the seven-year history of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, a particular region of the country will be celebrated for its music, influence and artists–and super-producer Timbaland will be center stage. Timbaland will be honored for his groundbreaking contributions to hip-hop on the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South, airing on VH1 on Monday, June 7 at 9 PM ET/PT.

Noting that the South has helped propel hip-hop into the worldwide cultural phenomenon that it has become today, the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South, hosted by actor/comedian Craig Robinson (The Office), will shine the spotlight on Timbaland, who has stamped his indelible imprint on the music scene since the mid-1990s. Other artists of the Dirty South will also be honored. For more information on the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South, visit HipHop.VH1.com.

Hailing from Virginia, where he produces most of his music at his own studio and where he heads his own label (Mosley Music Group), Timbaland has created a trademark innovative sound that crosses cultural lines and has defined a new wave of music–R&B and hip-hop mixed with eclectic effects held together by complex syncopated beats. The result has been a series of career-defining hits for artists such as Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Jodeci, Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Destiny’s Child, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z, among many others. A two-time Grammy winner, Timbaland has spawned numerous imitators, yet he remains the acknowledged originator.

Timbaland’s most recent Top 40 Hot 100 hits have spun off from 2009’s Top 10 R&B/Hip-hop Timbaland Presents Shock Value II (Mosley Music Group/Interscope): “If We Ever Meet Again” featuring Katy Perry, “Carry Out” featuring Justin Timberlake and “Say Something” featuring Drake. His third solo album, Shock Value II followed 2007’s Shock Value, a Top 5, platinum smash across the globe that scored three Top 3 Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 Pop, triple-platinum “Apologize” featuring OneRepublic.
