Missy Elliott Shares Graves Disease Diagnosis
Billboard reports that in an interview with the upcoming issue of People, Missy Elliott reveals that she was diagnosed with the thyroid disorder Graves disease in 2008, the aggressive treatment plan for which left little time for music. Elliott speaks about her battle with the autoimmune disorder in the season premiere of Behind the Music, airing Wednesday, June 29, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Justin Bieber And His Security Team Attack A Plainclothes New York City Cop
Ninety minutes ago, at an appearance at Macy’s in Herald Square in Manhattan, Justin Bieber went outside, reportedly to apologize to the massive crowd that could not come inside due to fire code. As the throng of screaming Beliebers pressed against the barriers, an undercover cop ran towards Bieber to protect him—only, neither Bieber nor his security knew the guy was a cop. Onlookers across the street caught the incident on film and, naturally, uploaded it to YouTube, so one and all can see Bieber coming to blows with a cop. [Sound of the City and TMZ]

Miley Cyrus has been catching some flak for her cover of Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Friday night in Ecuador. But the criticisms aren’t really about her rendition—which was not great, but not terrible, and let’s remember that the audio quality is pretty low—but about the difference between what “Smells Like Teen Spirit” means to Miley Cyrus and what it means to those who were alive when the song was recorded. Miley has said that Kurt Cobain is her “dream boyfriend” but there’s no indication that she sees much of a difference between him and, say, Bret Michaels, with whom she recorded an unreleased rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”
And so what? News flash, Generation X: Kurt Cobain isn’t ours anymore. He entered the pop imagination almost twenty years ago. Learn to share. (At the same time, that doesn’t mean you have to like the covers.)
In that spirit, here are the ten most notable reimaginings of the classic Nirvana single, in chronological order. Classic? Misguided? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Oops! The recent Behind The Music episode on Usher mistakenly stated that his ex-girlfriend, recording artist Chilli, was previously married to producer Dallas Austin. Though the two had a long relationship that produced their son, Tron, they were never married. VH1 regrets the error.
In this outtake from Courtney Love‘s Behind the Music, she calls VH1′s own Dr. Drew a “great doctor,” but takes issue with his detoxing methods. She thinks he’s too harsh. Since she’s a medical professional and all, her argument carries a lot of merit, obviously.
But whatever, revoke her medical license and give this woman a degree in talking — the bonus clips from the episode, which run the gamut from her talking about bristling when people compliment her on Nirvana to the origin of her name to her Neil Young epiphany, are uniformly fascinating. When Courtney Love isn’t around, pop culture feels so empty.

If these uncensored outtakes from Courtney Love‘s Behind the Music (premiering Monday, June 21 at 8/7c) aren’t enough to make you fall in love with this woman all over again, nothing will be. From the size of Trent Reznor‘s penis, to her brief affair with heroin, to a teary examination of public scorn to a dissection of the effects of Rohypnol on the brain (“That’s what happens when I meet somebody and I don’t know if I hate them or like them or what, but I know that I did something. Did I f*** ‘em? I don’t know: Rohypnol.”) she doesn’t hold back, thank god. It’s almost amazing that it took this long for Courtney to get a Behind the Music. Hey, lucid-and-introspective Courtney Love, where have you been all our lives?
