Football Is Like, Totally Sexy

parisfootball.jpg

Dearest Eli,

Congrats to you and the guys about the big win! God, I’m really not up on how the game is played, but I had a great time at the Super Bowl party I went to. It was hot. I was so impressed with the way you made that winning drive into the tight little end zone. Loves it! You grabbed the pigskin, clasped it tightly in your big hands, and just kept on pushing it forward over and over again. It seemed like the whole field was one big bed and you were in charge. Is it hard to keep that kind of drive going for a long time? Are you sweaty by the time you’re done? Are you doing anything this weekend? We should connect so you can teach me some of the rules. I know I’ve got what it takes to be the ball carrier, and would love to learn what a tight end can do. Some guys have even said that I’m a really good open receiver! And hey - what’s this I hear about a three-point stance? Text me, hon.

Yours, Paris

PS: Seriously, you better call. Don’t make me ring up Tom Brady!

Super Bowl Commercials: Which Were Best?

Diet Pepsi Max: Nod - Pepsi-Cola

Last Friday we plopped a handful of Super Bowl commercials in your lap, but here are the two that got the most laffs at our house last night. Between Missy Elliot nodding off and Ten Ton Ted hot-wiring his nipples, it was a swell game. Head over to Spike.com for a round up all the genius adverts.

Super Bowl 08: Cheaters Never Win!

Everyone loves an upset. Everyone ‘cept those who were trounced, of course. The great drama that was last night’s Super Bowl game ended with a big-ass defense stifling a big-ass offense. Some positioned it as Manning and team vs Brady and team, but maybe it was more Michal Strahan and his wall of terror vs Tom Brady and his invisible tight ends. The Giants front line was raging full-on. At least one wag at the party I attended suggested it was payback for the Belichick video-taping scandal that went down earlier in the season. We’ll let you ponder that, and weigh in below. Why did the Giants win? Why did the Pats lose?

Check out some pics from the big game.

The Giants Win! Paula Abdul Lip-Synchs!

The New York Giants shocking upset last night wasn’t the only Super Bowl performance worth noting, although it was certainly the most memorable. In slightly less stunning news, American Idol judge and 45-year-old pop star Paula Abdul returned, singing a song called “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.” In a word: Awkweird. Although we are staunch believers in second chances, and know with certainty here at VH1 that second acts in American public life both exist and are de rigeur (Scott Baio is 46! Peter Brady is married! Bret Michaels is looking for love in all the wrong places!), Abdul’s lip-synching was awkward in the extreme. Fellow Idol judge Randy Jackson accompanied Abdul on bass. And more than one Internet critic has called for the return of MC Skat Kat. That would have been interesting.

Mary J: Smashing & Storytelling

mary_pepsi_smash_1.jpg

Mary J. Blige kicked butt at this year’s Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash, last night in Arizona. If you caught our live stream of the show, you know she sat in with co-headliners Maroon 5 and had her pal Ne-Yo take the stage for a little pillow talk. It airs Saturday at 9/8c - don’t miss. Passionate performances are what Ms. Blige is about, of course. We recently caught her at the taping of her Storytellers show, and she was in the highest of spirits for that, too. “Just Fine” doesn’t even begin to describe her showmanship, which left both her and the audience breathless. It premieres on February 25.

Check out some shots from Mary’s Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash performance below.

Sunday’s Super Bowl Commercials: Justin’s Nutcracker, Peyton & Eli’s Lick Job, Chimichanga Dating, Danica’s Daddy

Magnetic Attraction Pepsi Stuff Super Bowl Justin Timberlake
Uploaded by cliptacular

There are those who watch the Super Bowl because they’ve got lotsa $$$$$ riding on it. There are those who watch the Super Bowl because it’s a chance to slurp beer and wolf Doritos. There are those who watch the Super Bowl because the fierce competition of sports and brutish grace of football are addicting. And then there are those who watch the Super Bowl for the cool-ass commercials. A few of this Sunday’s offerings have already made it to the Web. We corralled ‘em, and from Oreos to Bud Lite to Taco Belle to Pepsi, they’ve got me feeling a little hungry. Which one’s your favorite? Don’t forget the cool ones from years gone by. Pepsi Smash: Maroon 5 Can Hardly Wait To See Mary

The Pepsi Smash show is a mere four days away, and Maroon 5 are pretty psyched to play it. With a line-up that includes Mary J. Blige and Ne-Yo, Adam Levine and James Valentine stopped by our Top 20 studios to chat about what they’re looking forward to. After some joking about their Grammy nominations (apparently the boys are nominated for Best Band Ever in the Entire Universe category — new this year) the Maroon Men gushed about Mary. Find out what they had to say.

Ne-Yo Kicking Superbowl Smash, Too

ne-yosuit.jpgMary J. Blige is going to have some help in Arizona this Thursday night. When the Pepsi Smash Superbowl Bash gets going, Ne-Yo is jumping onstage to help his pal Mary throw some funk around. You know that she was part of a remix of Ne-Yo’s “Do You” last year. But did you know that his favorite sandwich is a chicken and cheese thingee with mayo and mustard? And did you know that the first CD he bought was the Pharcyde’s Bizarre Ride to the Pharcyde? And did you know one of his earliest memories was watch his mom dance to Prince songs? No? You’d best get brought up to speed on our boy. Here’s a User’s Guide that will let the R&B star explain things himself.

Watch the Pepsi Smash show, which also features Maroon 5, live this Thursday night on VH1.com, and again this Saturday night on VH1 itself.

Super Bowl Warm Up Flicks

eli-manning-super-bowl-515xjpg.jpg
The Pats are acting smug. The Giants are being scoffed. And at least one pundit thinks that a New England loss would equal immortality. As the Superbowl gets ready to kick off, and Leatherheads prepares to drop, we wanted to remind you that Hollywood has applied itself to the gridiron a number of times. Here are five movies that put the ball between the goalposts. What are your fave football flicks?

Friday Night Lights (2004)
The Game: In small-town Odessa, Texas, high school football isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. Based on a true story, Billy Bob Thornton finds his mojo and leads the ‘88 team to the state finals.
10-yard Penalty: Literary purists gripe that it can’t live up to the legendary book by H.G. Bissinger.
Final Score: This ain’t The Replacements. Wins big points for its gritty realism (a father beats his son when he fumbles the ball) and the way it scrutinizes the dead end community as keenly as the on-the-field action.

Any Given Sunday (1999)
The Game: Oliver Stone does the NFL, with thumping music, graphic violence (an eyeball pops loose after one tackle), spit-heavy speeches from coach Al Pacino, and QB Jamie Foxx’s first dramatic performance.
10-yard Penalty:
Cameron Diaz as the president of an NFL franchise is about as believable as Cameron Diaz as a super-spy who works for a guy named Charlie.
Final Score: With its pounding tackles and snarling fans, Stone’s macho epic hits as hard and fast as a coked-up Lawrence Taylor.

Tom Brady: Deep in the End Zone

In the grand tradition of impromptu balladry (Jonathan Richman, Adam Sandler), a dude has concocted a folkie ode to his hero. Because his hero is the best QB around, and because the best QB’s team is heading for the Superbowl, the ode is now news (if you define news as wonderful nonsense that eats up the minutes of your day). Please learn the words to the ode, develop your own man-crush on the best QB, and bet lots of loot on the triumph of New England. Oh, and send to a friend as well.

If you’re looking for a similar feel, don’t forget the passion between Andy Samburg and Dr. Evil.
